  1. Yeah…don’t put any faith in a graph that doesn’t look like a hockey stick…

  2. In Obozonomics, down is up, lies are truth and playing golf is “exercising executive power”.
    YES, we can’t.

  3. For sure it’s nothing. If you look at the grey bars of recession, housing starts are always a leading indicator of recovery. Since the US economy is growing so well now, the housing starts need to be adjusted upward to hide the decline.

  4. Y’know,I think THAT is the real Global Warming graph.
AND it shows we’ve been cooling off the last five years!
    Whew.

  5. I should hope that new starts would be low, since there’s so much pent-up inventory from the housing bubble and low demand.
Given that this is the first housing bubble on the chart, I wouldn’t hold any correlation between recession and housing starts to be particularly relevant at this point.

  6. S’okay. Obama gonna buy up all the unsold houses with his stash so’s we can start building again…

  7. Are you sure you didn’t paste the chart for temperatures? Sure looks like a hockey stick!

  8. And there’s worse to come. There’s still about a trillon dollars in bad mortgages still to be foreclosed on. Adding yet more supply onto the market. Not just new construction but also US housing prices are going to have to drop a lot more before the market hits bottom.
Good thing we’re not counting on the US for our softwood lumber near as much these days.

  9. EZ fix people: Stimulous!
Lets call it “Ca$h for Shelters”.
Lets just demolish these enviromentally unfriendly used homes, and give people government money to build new ones. This will create a new housing market while ignoring the root causes.
    Solved!

  10. It starts with empty houses then empty stores, empty malls, empty suburbs…
Watch the warm year round states (New Mexico, Nevada etc…)eventually get an influx of survivalists from the northern States
It all happened in the 1930’s.
Invest in Coleman futures…Tent and camping gear

  11. Fred, given the administrations attitude to home energy production “Yes We Won’t” seems more appropriate.
That, and the looting of the US treasury, is criminal.

  12. Sigivald @ 4:50 pm.m: “I should hope that new starts would be low, since there’s so much pent-up inventory from the housing bubble and low demand.”
That’s essentially what I was thinking.

  13. Housing is one of those ‘motherhood and apple pie’ American dreams that Barny Frank and friends clearly didn’t think could be mismanaged.
They did and its biting them back bigtime.
Too bad so many innocents have to be collateral damage in the process.
