The Decline And Fall Of The American Empire

Now is the time at SDA when we juxtapose!
Nov.26th, 2010The Obama administration is condemning the expected release of classified diplomatic cables by the Wikileaks website and warning that it will endanger lives and interests.

Bumped for update

Among scores of other disclosures that are likely to cause uproar, the cables detail:
• Grave fears in Washington and London over the security of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons programme
• Alleged links between the Russian government and organised crime.
• Devastating criticism of the UK’s military operations in Afghanistan.
• Claims of inappropriate behaviour by a member of the British royal family.

Ugh.
More links are now up at Drudge including…

I’d say something cute like “the Empire strikes back”, if I thought the Empire had the will.
For the curious; StateLogs has a Wikileaks “cablegate” searchable database.

  1. When government is no longer fearful of the people whom they serve, it will enslave and control them. It becomes a parasite which lives off the fat of the land and contributes only enough to ensure its host stays alive.

  2. When do we see the DHS parked on the wikileaks domain? Can’t do it technically? Certainly the lawfulness does not seem to matter to Big Sis, so I conclude DHS is picking the low hanging fruit – those sites registered in US DNS providers, or wikileaks’ continued existence fills some purpose.

  3. dang.
why is it I always find out where to get the free stuff after it gets shut down?
how do you download a vinyl LP anyway??? LOL !!!

  4. The “one” will bow down to the Islamofacists, but will screw his country by allowing his DHS czars to shutdown websites??? Where’s a good hacker when you need one?

  5. A textbook example of mission creep?
What does alleged copyright infringement have to do with Homeland Security?
Why aren’t the alleged victims of copyright infringement suing through normal legal channels?
Many hardcore libertarians are highly skeptical of the whole notion of “intellectual property” in the first place.
    But that’s a separate topic.
This looks to me like early conditioning of the public so that website seizures may become accepted as normal.
And consider the methodology: seizure with no advanced notice, no initial query. Just, WHAM, you’re toast.
I’m valiantly trying to not descend into paranoidal madness but this and the “net neutrality” nonsense gives me an extremely uncomforable feeling.

  6. So, now besides grabbing your gonads, the Department of Homeland Security will check your ipod and computer to see if your tunes are all legit? Is this for frikkin’ real? These guys are getting worse than the popcorn police at the movie theaters.

  7. Thanks, Kate. You have a sharp eye for the illuminating juxtaposition. A ( SDA )juxtaposition is worth a thousand words.

  8. The Obama is starting to make the Nazis look good – really.
When will his killing start? When Acorn is issued with weapons, I suppose.

  9. Wikileaks, I think, is based on servers outside the US. Can’t be touched by their authorities.
I wonder what DHS would make of Russian servers? *the sound of a thousand Russian hackers laughing*

  10. JOhn Lewis
You exaggerate. Obama is bad and he may want to be like his role-models but he has none of their ability.
It is funny how Wikileaks were OK with Obama when they published Afghanistan-related documents but when Obama reputation will suffer they suddenly are in the wrong. Further, have you noticed how Wikileaks discriminates against other countries. The damaged reputation in majority of Wikileaks is the US government and US people’s reputation, it is nearly always US who suffer — but there are no Chinese major leaks, no European major leaks, no Arab major leaks. I ask you, is it not a discrimination against the other countries???
Monique – where are American hackers……..are they all liberals who prefer to hack US government documents but are afraid of hacking Chinese/Arab documents knowing the consequences? Yes, I know, they opted for safety and warm feeling of “we done something to cut the branch we sit on. Hurray!!!
As for Russian hackers – they, like their American brethren , also prefer safety and comfort; they can hack US documents (although I think it is more of china hackers’ doing) but they can not safely hack and publish Russian government documents.

  11. I predict rapid growth in traffic to offshore bit torrent servers.
I also predict ipods and laptops/phones/etc getting seized wholesale at the border and at TSA grope n’grab checkpoints real soon. End result will eventually be rioting, when they start pulling this crap to get on the subway.
Or possibly it will all magically end in January when the new congress takes power. Depends on how serious the Tea Party is, pretty much.
Either way, my phone/laptop/ipod/whatever has ZERO music or video when I travel. Better safe than sorry, I always say.

  12. I’ve worked for a number of multinationals over the years and since 9/11 it’s been standard practice, if someone needs to go to another country on a business trip, for the hard drive to be removed from the laptop before they travel. When they get to their destination, they’re given a new hard drive by the local office with the company’s standard system install on it. Any data they need resides on company servers connected by encrypted network links anyway.
tl;dr – they can’t seize your data if you’re not carrying any.

  13. Servers and DNS entries are distinct. A server can be offshore, but so what if DHS has seized the DNS registration? My point is that I am wondering why DHS has not seized the wikileaks DNS name/IP address entry. Is fake Gucci handbags a higher priority than national security?

  14. “Is fake Gucci handbags a higher priority than national security?”
Yes, especially if it makes Republicans look bad to the nutroot base of the DemocRats.

  15. maybe this will take eyes OFF the Zero, and he’ll try pulling a fast one while everyone is reading wikileeks

  16. It’s a revalation that embassies spy on enemies and allies?
    Seriously?
The primary purpose of an embassy is to collect intel.

  17. I assume Gawker was one of the sites shut down.
Oh, it’s still up … doesn’t seem copyright infringement is a DHS concern.

  18. Hi Kate no 1 blog on my list I think alot of us readers of u site are ashamed that anyone but a us citizen can be the first on topics like u and u freinds, just a thought about wiki leaks though
all this info is to the lefts advantage and more than likely winked at from Obama he may see the us slide into irrelavence wich i think was his fathers dream

  19. Ugh may be an understatement. For anybody with rudimentary critical thinking skills these revelations are nothing new at all.
The Russian government mobbed up. Check.
    Inappropriate Royal behavior. Naturally.
Fears over Pakistani nukes. Goes without saying.
Euro candy asses in the war theater. Uh huh.
Arabs wanting Iran smacked down. No shit.
Spying at the U.N. Go figure.
Just wait for the Canadian inferiority angle wherein our MSM breathlessly confirms the supposition.

  20. decline and FALL. No-one will trust the Yanks again,
    least of all over security.
    Not to mention will power.
Why Assange and the management of the NYT are stil
    alive is beyond my comprehension.
It requires little imagination to guess the discussions which are going on within the governments of Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, etc.

  21. “I’d say something cute like “the Empire strikes back”, if I thought the Empire had the will.”
Kate, yes, yes, correct indeed! You are on a roll with this one.

  22. Interesting how Spiegl and NY Times are the ones who had early access to the leaks. These are both left-wing rags so it tells you something about Wikileaks.
The Obama administration should stop complaining. The people doing the leaking are part of his extended “progressive” family that he relied on to get elected.
You made your bed Obama, now lie in it.

  23. ella, “You exaggerate. Obama is bad and he may want to be like his role-models but he has none of their ability.” Oh I agree.
He is no Hitler, nor Stalin, nor Mao. And flirtation with the
“reductio ad Hitlerium” is dangerous. But Obama has
injured the US in so many ways that physical assaults upon opponents seems to me the logical next step.
Hiring goons is probably something that Obama would be able to do.

  24. If it really has only to do with protecting copyrights ( royalties and such things) then I am all for it.
We all like music, books, and movies but most of us forget the those creative people behind those things we enjoy so much are paid per copy sold.
When you download for free a copy of a song, book or movie you are in fact stealing just as if you were stuffing t-bones and smoked salmon in your pants while visiting your corner store.
Creative people need to have their work protected.
And please don’t forget that not all artists are liberals.
If tens of thousands of artists can not make a living with their creative work – if it is good enough to sell but is stolen on the internet – then this is tens of thousand of people that can not contribute to the economy.
Creative people deserve to have their copyrights protected,
…unless you want them all on welfare?
I do not like leftists , I do not like big government and I certainly do not like Obama…
BUT protecting copyrights is something that should have been tackled 20 years ago.

  25. Agree with syncro on this one. These ‘leaks’ as with the last, really reveal nothing that a well read person already did not know.
I am looking forward to the canadian media’s salivating over any hint of information on the ongoing Afghanistan detainee ‘torture scandal’.
    Well back to football.

  26. friend of usa-
I agree. Copyright is very important. All my friends and relatives use these torrent sites to download free this and that. I tell them it is stealing and refuse to participate. Using these sites to my mind amounts to stealing.
I lay out books for writers and my father was an artist. Copyright is about protecting the rights of artists. In other words don’t touch my junk without paying for it.
Now if they start shutting down any old website that they do not like, that is a very different matter.

  27. With recent revelations from wikileaks I am starting to wonder. What is the purpose of government? Is it to steal from us, lie to us, make us live in fear, make us subservient to their (government) needs, use our money to start wars, destroy our economy, kill people, spy on people, hurt, maim, do damage to the world and to our reputation in the world…….all so that some of them can live fatter on our labour. I sure do feel like I am getting good value for the money i give to my criminals..er leaders.
My (Canadian )effort to hold my criminals..er leaders to account for stealing from us found at http://www.albertafraud.com
    wish me luck.

  29. Tell me why you could invent an energy saving device that could save the world billions and then apply for a time limited patent on said device.
Yet an “artist” can string together a few words or sounds and get a revenue stream from it that may last generations.

  30. grobe-
it usually doesn’t last generations but if an artist by ‘stringing a few words or sounds together’ does not have any copyright protection what’s the point?
Should they work at their craft and not be paid? Of course a lot of artists in Canada rely on grants is that a better model? It isn’t- because then the arts are under government control.
I would much prefer to have an artistic community that has the mens to pay for itself than have to rely upon the government. As for the energy saving device guy, often those patents do go on for generations. They can afford to hire good patent and trade mark lawyers.
You know this really is a subject for national debate.

  31. Most folks here have seen this coming for a while.
That is the take over of the Web. Fortunately they did it to late.
Its why we need gypsy servers world wide.
Obama still operating on never let a crisis go unused to destroy freedom to gain absolute control.
I mean how many times has he gone this?
We should be shamed if we don’t know this was in the cards. TSA fervor helped hide it, as is Obama’s want.

  32. There are people that routinely upload video games and movies they have bought and paid for so others can view and use them. They do not consider it theft, they consider it sharing. Much like an online library – minus the library card.
Downloading, burning and then selling the copywrited material, or requiring persons to pay to download someone’s elses material is another matter altogether.
I have viewed portions of movies online. They do not offer the same options as purchasing a DVD. There is no menu, added features, or deleted scenes. Also, I found I could not fast forward or reverse a movie, only pause. Plus, I could only watch them on my PC, which is not set up for movie viewing comfort. Personally, I have used these sites to determine whether or not I want to purchase a DVD or not, so I can watch it as many times as I like in cozy comfortable location in my home with my family and friends. Trailers can be so misleading.

  33. @grobe: you’re equating copyright and patent law. They’re not the same thing and they serve very different legal purposes.
@Friend of USA: not, it is not stealing in any meaningful sense of the term, because the copyright infringer has not deprived the owner of any property. It’s violation of a civil contract, nothing more.
@Wikileaks: no, you’re not suffering a DDoS attack. You’re just too dumb to scale your server capacity to match your hype machine.

  34. grobe:
Originally, copyright in the US was the owner’s lifetime plus (IIRC) 17 (27?) years. This was changed after Walt Disney’s death. Mike Eisner and the Disney corporation successfully lobbied the US government for an extension of life +75 years, primarily because classics like Snow White and Pinocchio were due to come off copyright.
And the biggest argument I see is the RIAA and MPIAA’s insistence that you not only need to pay for the first copy of any work you buy, but for every copy, in any format, that you decide you want. So, according to them, ripping songs from a legally purchased CD to your iPod is illegal. Copying a DVD you bought to your laptop to watch on a long flight – illegal. Making DVD copies of your soon to be useless vinyl LP’s – illegal.

  35. Just think. We might be getting 24/7 the sky is falling Cancun climate change conference coverage instead. Thank you, Julian Assange!!!

  36. Artists will continue to make music/art regardless of the copyright laws, This is a straw-man argument. Most popular artist do quite well today, there are MORE opportunities to make $$ as a result of the web, not less. In my view, today’s artists should take the good with the bad. The artists that argue they’ve been harmed by the net are typically 60’s, 70’s and 80’s troglodytes that haven’t figured out how to make a buck in the new world. Instead they depend on past deeds, and demand that the integrity of the old economic model stay intact for their own benefit. Downloading a song IS NOT STEALING!
Personally, I still purchase 90% of my music on CD.

  37. To those who think downloading/copying is not stealing,
If you can enter in a movie theater by the back door without paying is that not stealing?
If there is a hole in the wall at McDonald and you can grab all the fries and hamburgers you want is that not stealing?
No one has managed to convince me that downloading or copying copyrighted material without the creator receiving royalties is NOT stealing.
Creators are paid in royalties, what of this do you not understand?
What if I could copy your signature and your bank account number and write cheques to myself, would you feel the same way?
Hey it is just a copy of the real thing!
so it is not really stealing right ?

  38. “If you can enter in a movie theater by the back door without paying is that not stealing?”
    No, it’s trespassing.
“If there is a hole in the wall at McDonald and you can grab all the fries and hamburgers you want is that not stealing?”
You’re taking a tangible physical item, thereby depriving it’s owner of said item. Of course that’s stealing.
“No one has managed to convince me that downloading or copying copyrighted material without the creator receiving royalties is NOT stealing.”
Nobody has managed to convince me that stealing a base is NOT stealing. Therefore all baseball players should be locked up.
“What if I could copy your signature and your bank account number and write cheques to myself, would you feel the same way?”
Sure, as long as you (or anyone else) didn’t cash them. If owning cheques with my fake signature on them makes you feel happy, go right ahead!
