When it comes to music, nobody does sincerity like the Australians. Artists like Helen Reddy, Rolf Harris, Crowded House, and even the Bee Gees seem incapable of cynicism, and that applies double to The Seekers. When I was a kid, I fell in love with lead singer Judith Durham’s reassuringly earnest voice as it came through the radio beside my bed, and to this day I find the absence of (dis)affected posing, or of any attempt to project toughness or hipness in their music heartwarming and comforting. It’s music for everybody, and a fine antidote to the profound cynicism on display in – for example – that 10:10 video. Here, for your enjoyment, are The Seekers, at their farewell concert in London, England, performing I’ll Never Find Another You.

They aren’t, but they lived there for a while in the ’60s before they got big in 1967. Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb were all born in Douglas, Isle of Man, as it happens.

The guy who made the accusation of racism, A.J. Weberman – the same guy who went through Bob Dylan’s garbage for years and “interpreted” his findings in a truly bizarre, unglued, insane way – is a well- known loser and a bona fide idiot.
His interpretation of “Subterranean Homesick Blues” as *racist* shows that he’s seriously off his rocker; I mean, that the kind of “interpretation” that hospitalized schizophrenics deliver when they watch, I don’t know, a fitness infomercial. The guy is certifiable.
The “racist” Bob Dylan married a black woman whom he has a daughter with, and he’s had other long-term relationships with black women. The Neville Brothers, the Staples Singers, and Bob Johnston, the guy who produced most of his 60s albums love him, and they’re all black.

“A debate held by a Palestinian radio station has revisited the issue of female mutilation, with interviewed parents saying they prefer to perform hysterectomies on mentally ill girls in order to prevent them from becoming impregnated.
But the procedure is known to be performed in order to allay fears of embarrassment by a similarly ill offspring, and has been sanctioned to this end by both Sharia and the Palestinian Authority.
“We can’t follow the girls around 24 hours a day, and we worry that they will be sexually assaulted, so we prefer to cut out their wombs,” one parent told a radio station belonging to the Ma’an news agency.
The station held a debate on the matter over the past few days, uncovering a phenomenon not uncommon in the West Bank.
Parents who were interviewed anonymously cited protecting their daughters from rape as the reason behind the procedure, and the mufti of Nablus issued a decree approving hysterectomies “if they can put an end to a mental condition or social problem”.
A gynecologist interviewed by the radio stressed that the procedure prevents pregnancy but not sexual desire.
The debate also concluded that Palestinian law does not prevent hysterectomies from being carried out on mentally ill girls, despite prohibiting the severing of body parts from any person’s body without that person’s consent.
Female Palestinian MP Dr. Sahar Al Qawasmi agreed that there is a legal problem, and said a hysterectomy does nothing to defend the girl but rather serves only to protect her family from the shame and embarrassment incurred in Muslim society by a mentally ill family member.”

The Seekers in 2003,and they still sound just great! I always wondered why Judith Durham didn’t have a more enduring career,she had one of the best voices heard in that era.
I like the Australian’s unabashed approach to their music and film; here it is,accept it or reject it,no apologies. Unlike most Canadian film,which seems to have an overtone of self-consciousness about it; we’re sorry if this doesn’t attract Americans.
I guess some in the entertainment business see us as the “little brother” to the U.S.
