It’s been said that the definition of a gentleman is someone who knows how to play the accordion but refrains from doing so. This rule of thumb certainly doesn’t apply to Belgian-French accordionist Gus Viseur, whose musette-style accordion music turns everyone within earshot into a continental sophisticate. So grab a seat at a sidewalk cafe, order a glass of red, stick a lit Gauloises in the corner of your mouth, and dim your eyelids in a world-weary way as you watch the world go by to the accompaniment of Gus (Gustave-Joseph) Viseur and his group, as they breeze their way through Django Reinhardt’s Djangologie.
Don’t mind the video dropouts – it’s the terroir, non?

  2. It’s the terroir, oui. Late afternoon in Paris, just before rush hour. RER Line B headed to our friends house in the burbs. All the required Africans and Arabs and pickpockets have made their way through the car. Maybe the last city stop a big, kind of shabby French guy and his formerly pretty (now beautiful) wife get on. He has a squeezebox. He plays French music, his wife works the car. They clean up. You’re damn right it’s the terroir.

    Check out the article “Go To Cash”. It’s written by some folks from Bank of Montreal, and it provides a devastating (to the bulls, anyway) critique to the article for holding securities at this time.

    Was just on the B3 line last week (my hotel was near Denfert-Rochereau). I may have heard the same guy. I also heard another accordionist on the Metro… a gypsy man playing French favorites, with his daughter accompanying him on a tambourine-like instrument… then working the car. I dropped a spare euro into her tambourine.

  8. I urge everyone to read WSJ editorial board member Dorothy Rabinowitz’s superb article The Alien in the White House. It is the best, most clear-headed assessment of Obama’s presidency and, especially, of Obama the man that I’ve yet read.
    Seriously, do read.

  11. Looks like the MSM has stooped to a new low; the latest are rumours that Sarah Palin has had a “boob” job. Is there no bottom that these guys will not slither beneath? Not that it matters but maybe she got a new bra. Geesh, they will do anything but listen to what she has to say.

  16. I read and post comments to the National Post but have been unable to even see any comments let alone post any on their articles at their website. I know they are changing their format but am curious if any of you are having the same problem or have a solution I would be interested in reading it.
    Lorne Gunter responded to my query but could offer no solution except their web designer are aware of it. No response in writing to the NP.

    NDP Charlie Angus is upset about this and says “One of the problems they’re going to face is that there is actually an obligation in Canada — unlike the United States — to have some balance (in news reporting),” said Angus.

  19. EBD – yes, that article ‘Alien in the White House’ is excellent. But I suggest that Obama’s alienation is not confined to his refusal to acknowledge the reality of Islamic fascism and jihadism as terrorism.
    That makes it appear as an intellectual perception. I think that there are TWO mindsets in the White House.
    There is indeed the radical socialist left, the latte crowd, secure in their govt jobs and top level political contacts, who sit around the coffee shops and readily blame Americans for all problems in the world. This is an intellectual construct – intellectual despite its being based in ignorance and elitist smugness.
    Then, there is Obama, and he’s not an intellectual; he views the world through a psychological haze. And he’s alienated from everyone and everything. He feels no kinship with America or Americans. Or with the West. If he feels any filiation, it is indeed more with the Muslim and non-western world; we can’t ignore that he spent his formative years as a Muslim.
    And above all, he feels no bonds with anyone; Obama’s world is a virtual one; it’s one that he maintains in his mind. It’s a psychological realm and has little relevance to reality. He works very hard to keep reality out of it!
    So, dissenters are accused of ignorance as he accuses those who reject His health care. Or political bias. Or racism- as he is now accusing people who criticize his lack of leadership on the Gulf Oil, as ‘racists’, claiming that IF he were to be angry, THEN, they’d all define him as an ‘angry black man’.
    Thus we have a White House that is thoroughly alienated from Americans – both intellectually and psychologically.

  21. North American media blackout?:
    Obama officially announced to MSM yesterday a pledge to send 400 million $’s in aid to Palestine when Habbas was visiting. I found a small Reuters report via Drudge yesterday afternoon.
    Today, I cannot find any reports on it when I Google except Blog links and a few reports from overseas. Fox has NOTHING on it and Drudge’s link is gone.
    This would be highly controversial in the US right now.
    The country is already broke, an ecological disaster with no end in sight where people are asking why is’nt there more clean up efforts deployed and the subject recepient of the aid money already in controversy because of the turkey ‘aid’ ship issue of late.
    This is huge…Where are the reports in MSM?

  24. Yes, it was on FOX – several times. As well, mention was made of the difference in treatment of Abbas – who got a photo interview and dinner! – while Netanyahu was denied both, and indeed, had to sit and wait to see Obama.

  25. Is Ontario asleep or just in favour of assuming the HST tax burden so as to give Ontario business a competitive advantage?
    I suspect Ontarioans are unaware.
    We in BC are FULLY aware and our petition against the HST has reached the required 10% minimum and we have buffered that to at least 15% to cover doubtful signatures.
    Now who will be better off? The sleepy Ontario voter or the more aware BCer?
    My name is on the petition for selfish reasons, yet, as one who understands finance to a small degree, I worry that the moderate tax burden could have given our provincal small businesses considerable incentive to create more jobs.
    The efficiencies of just one tax alone are very real.
    Will Ontario win while snoozing?

    I just moved back from South Korea and spent several other years in the US. My cable company called me today and said I went over my internet cap and would be charged xxx dollars per gig for going over the cap. Naturally, I could get a better package for $7 a month more which would give me 3 times the allowable GB.
    She said America and Korea don’t have such caps and Cogeco was the last company to institute them. Is this something any other Canadians have experienced? I don’t have any other internet options really other than paying. Ticks me off.
    Thanks for letting me vent.
