Beats the hell out of me too

One has sympathized with Sen. Colin Kenny’s desire that our politicians would discuss the Afghan situation seriously for the benefit of the public. The problem is that they just won’t. Brian Platt at The Canada-Afghanistan Blog:

CKNW, Afghanistan, And Our Terrible Politicians

I attended a CKNW radio show today at the Afghan Horsemen restaurant, where they were doing a live town hall discussion on Canada and Afghanistan. Their interviews included a Canadian soldier, an Afghan-Canadian, and a poli-sci prof at SFU–but also Terry Glavin, who closed the show with a magnificent spiel that cut through all the bullshit and left us in speechless awe. The fact that Terry only got three minutes to speak out of a 2-hour show is criminal.

You can hear hour 1 of the show here. Hour 2 here. Yours truly has a short time at the mike at the 32:40 mark of the first hour. But if nothing else, make sure you hear the last five minutes of hour 2.
The bulk of the show was taken up by a panel discussion with three MPs: Andrew Saxton from the Tories, Ujjal Dosanjh from the Liberals, and Peter Julian from the NDP. The segment was mostly useless, with the MPs spouting their talking points and trying to score points off each other. Why on earth would CKNW think that was the best use of the show’s time? Beats the hell out of me…

P.S. – You were right about Terry’s bit. Here’s an .mp3 of his summation as a stand-alone – great radio! Well done TGG

  1. I saw Terry Glavin speak during the roundtable discussion/Q&A following Bruce Bawer’s presentation on Islamism here in Ottawa last week, and indeed he’s a forceful “cut through the bullshit” speaker. Would definitely like to see a full lecture from him on Afghanistan or Islamism.

  2. 31:03, 1st hour. You KNOW they’ve been trained to talk about Afghanistan and Iraq as though it’s Vietnam all over again. Because as we all know “we” “lost” “Vietnam”.
    -sigh-

  3. Dudley, I was one of the 72 people who participated (listened and watched) via the net to that presentation. I was going to direct folks here to the entry on my blog where I’ve got the video of it embedded. Terry’s best by far barnburner statement begins at about the 47:14 minute until 51:00. If anyone wants to watch the thing, go to this entry on my blog entry 6:49 pm., Tuesday, Sept. 22.
I’d post a link, but I’ve never been able to do that on Kate’s blog for some crazy reason.

  4. It’s been 30 years since I’ve had an opportunity to lift a pint with Mr. Glavin. He was a brilliant man then, and just gets better and better as he ages.

  5. This I will never forget about Ujjal Dosanjh. It was the first airing of ‘Question Period’ immediately after the Martin minority was defeated. He was now the liberal defense critic. This scumbag, deceitful POS had the audacity to blame the Conservatives and Harper for our involvement in Afghanistan, and say that we should get out of there because Canadians were dying unnecessarily. I almost lost a TV that day.

  6. The reason the show was done that way is it was Christy Clark’s show. She is both a Prov and Fed Liberal. Her husband is Mark Marissen, who has moved on from being a Prov Lib backroom boy to being a Fed Lib backroom boy (Remember, BC Prov Libs are NOT part of the greater Librano family. They are a coalition of center and center right, sort of like the old Socreds were. There are many Fed Cons and Libs in the provincial party here).
Her show is insipid, and annoying, and I have no idea why people listen to it. She has all the latest “fashionable” causes on her show, like vaccines cause autism, men and guns are bad, etc. I am not surprised that anything she did on Afghanistan would turn out to be a cockup.

  7. This is minor, but ya might wanna stop signing your posts “Mark…Ottawa”. It looks and reads weird, partially because the posts are actually followed with “Posted by Mark”.
    Cheers.

  8. The BC provincial libs are not center and center right, they are “center” and “center-left” at best.
This is the party which promised no new spending to get ourselves out of the recession. I honestly thought that they might just be as smart as we’d all been waiting to see; I thought we were going to witness some fortitude like Churchill’s “trying to lift yourself by the handle while you’re standing in the bucket”.
Unfortunately we got dyed-in-the-wool liberals who treated us to not just one carbon tax, they gave us two when they campaigned on a promise of INCREASING it – and moronic BCers voted them in.
Now it’s HST. You want to see center, center-right? Come to the BC Conservatives’ AGM this Saturday in Chilliwack.

  9. Yeah I remember distinctly the events of Tet…..Victor Charlie controlled 60 municipalities at the start and 6 at the end and ceased to exist as a threat….but the MSM lead by Walter Cronkite portrayed Tet as a US/allied loss—-
From what I recall the major difference between our MSM and Radio Hanoi was that Hanoi played better music.
Sorta like Dunkirk being a British Victory……..

  10. NW has been irrelevant for years.
Between Bill ‘goody two shoes’ Good, and Christy-christy Clark, there is nothing but blather. I gaev up listening to that station long ago.
Yes, Adler is on there at some point, but I’ve got better things to do than to listen to the inane comments and such
I work during the day, no time to listen to the nearly dead or unemployed, or welfare cases for that matter.
And yeah, Gordo and his minions are at least center-left, they gave up common sense 4 years ago, and are just slightly right of the far left Dippers

  11. @sasquatch
My hairy homeboy, the point about Tet is not that the VC controlled less turf before or after or lost more lives (they lost 40,000 soldiers in one night- US casualties were minimal).
The point was that people (including US soldiers) finally realised the extent to which the VC and NVA were willing to suffer and die for their cause. Cronkite correctly realised that Americans would never be willing to suffer and die like the VC and NVA.
Also, what really killed the support for the war was that middle class kids were starting to die. The draft had sucked up all the white trash and ghetto kids and all that was left were the middle class. the middle class parents said no way..

  12. If our soldier’s sacrifice is to have a continuing meaning, it will be preserved only when Canada determines that we are fighting for something that WE BELIEVE IN. Propping up a “Taliban Light” regime intent on making peace with the murderous Taliban isn’t it.
I’ve heard from many about how Islam must be an integral part of any Afghan government and how freedom grows incrementally over generations. Somebody forgot to tell that to Thomas Jefferson when he authored the Declaration of Independence.
“We hold these truths self evident” is something worth fighting for. Islam is not. If Afghanistan is to become a free nation with our help, that is where it has to start.
    Go deep or go home.

  13. War between Afganstan and Canada caused Muslim in Canda are ignored and people disrespect them and blame of them for all what happend and media made this relatioship worst
Canada must let USA to deal with Afganstan soon
and stop the war soon. Canda is in Afganstan more than time of world war I an II.
mission imposible since direction started was wrong
plus Sep 11 , 2001 media hit too much bad news agaist Muslim in world to defame any muslim if they are restriced to law automaticaly translate they are terrorist which is wrong way to explain Muslim Candaian are violance while that is nto true

The deputy leader of Britain’s leading Muslim group is suing the Government for defamation in an extremism row which could cost the taxpayer hundreds of thousands of pounds.
Dr Daud Abdullah, deputy secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain, has sent a solicitor’s letter to Communities Secretary Hazel Blears demanding a ‘substantial’ payout or he will drag the Government to court.
Any legal costs would be met from public funds – along with any payout to Dr Abdullah, who is also a member of the once Government-backed Mosques and Imams National Advisory Board.

Abousfian Abdelrazik was born in the Sudan and was admitted to Canada as a refugee in 1990 after political turmoil in his home country. After setting down roots in Canada where he worked as a machinist Abdulrazik became a Canadian citizen and started a family in his new country. He returned to Sudan in August 2003 to visit his ill mother. Shortly thereafter he was arrested in Khartoum as a suspected terrorist and jailed for about one year. During the time that he was in jail the authorities tried to get him to admit that he was a terrorist. There are even documents indicating that Canadian authorities had requested his detention.
he sue government 25 million dollar
Suaad Hagi Mohamud sue government 2.5 million dollar
    etc…
Is Conservative judge and law are fair with Muslim and if lawyers are fighting Muslim are fair with them
