I wonder if papers with a conservative slant are laying off staff at the same rate as the as the “progressive” rags?
Slashdot readers’ responses to an interview with the founder of http://www.skewz.com/
“Skewz is a place to read conservative and liberal stories selected by users.

One comment: Look at how a news outlet reports on a scandal involving a politician. Is his party reported in the title or first sentance? If so, odds are the source is biased against that party. Is the politician’s party not mentioned in the piece? Odds are the source is biased for that party.
Slashdot seems to be tilted to the left (it has an interesting post moderation system) likely due to an abundance of younger, computer/software-type people.
and true to form they layed off all their internet staff,
they will however increase the cuniform staff and the number of marble incriptors.
I await the day when they cut the remaining jobs in their newspaper division.
For the Toronto Star, that day can’t possibly come fast enough.
PiperPaul: If Slashdot’s left-leaning, it’s unlikely to be the computer types — most of them are libertarians.
The Toronto Star is garbage.
Happy to see the laying off left wing retards.
Life will get even better when there is a for sale sign on the front door.
Normally I don’t like to hear about job cuts. This time… I’ll make an exception.
Confusion to the enemy!
The Toronto Star? That paper was created to promote liberalism. They can’t even give it away.
cal2 at 2:47 AM LOL!!
As far as the cuts to the Toronto Star are concerned, it couldn’t have happened to a better rag and I mean rag.
Wonder if Kimberly Clarke’s toilet paper division is eyeing them.
The reason papers continue to decline is not because of their editorial slant. It’s because advertising was once only possible in the paper. These days, its much more economical to put your classifieds online.
So Todd, finally admitting they ARE slanted?
Just think in a matter of perhaps months we’ll be able to use the trees that were once destined for newsprint to be sent directly to the tissue plants. That way we don’t have to recycle the raw product to remove the ink and we can then export ‘pure virgin’ tissue to third world countries all over the world.
Did I read that right? 6,200 employees in their newspaper division? What do all these people do?
You’ve got the Toronto Star, Metro, Sing Tao, and a bunch of local newspapers. Presumably these publications share content and resources, thus lowering costs.
160 out of 6,200 isn’t much – less than 3% of the total workforce. They could have achieved these cuts with a few months attrition.
For your weekend reading pleasure. The vultures are picking at the corpse of another media dinosaur, the New York Times:
(Via Comment Central) Michael Wolff, The War on the Times
The Star made no mention today about RCMP charges laid against Benoit Corbeil, former Liberal Party Official, related to ADSCAM. G and M covered it. More Star Liberal bias??
Joel at PTBC says it better than I can ( emphasis mine )
… … …
“…Liberal papers all over North America are losing money and laying people off. In every case, they claim it’s the economy or it’s technology or simply that the folks are (mysteriously!) moving to the internet for their news.
Here’s a news flash: I think it’s also the fact that folks are wising up, and are quickly tiring of the abject liberal-left bias that has been revealed with the advent of the internet and bloggers like yours truly.
Many of the newspapers have been exposed as little more than journals of politically-left liars and manipulators.
… … …
And I totally agree.

“The New York Times is feeling the crunch and will very likely have to start cutting newsroom jobs.
NEW YORK (AP) — Without enough takers of buyout offers, The New York Times will very likely resort to layoffs to meet its goal of cutting 100 newsroom jobs.
Bill Schmidt, an assistant managing editor, sent Times staff a memo Tuesday afternoon saying the Times was “almost certain” to fall short of getting enough volunteers for buyouts, resulting in “some limited number” of layoffs in the newsroom.
Schmidt said it was still unclear how many layoffs were likely to occur, and encouraged employees to consider the offer before the deadlines occur early next week.”
Well it appears the need for spin doctors is declining.

The company’s main source of revenue, newspaper advertising in print and online, fell 10.6 percent, the sharpest drop in memory, as the industry suffers the twin blows of an economic downturn and the continuing long-term shift of readers and advertisers to the Internet.
Where did I say any paper wasn’t slanted? Depending on what news network I turn on (CBC, Fox News) or newspaper (National Post, Globe) or local radio station (CKOM) or *gasp* blog (SDA), there is a slant.
All I’m saying is that I don’t think the reason people are moving away from papers is because of editorial or journalistic slant. It’s that a lot of the classifieds are moving to the net, papers are downsizing their content to be something affordable (often through syndication) and people are getting tired of getting the same content without a local focus.
Earth to Todd; there is a difference between TRUTH and spin. Fox news, tells you what happened from the eyes of the person at the scene, CBC, CTV Glob and wail, Toronto burned out Star, take the news change it into something that makes Harper/ Bush look bad and Clinton/Layton/ and Steffi look good. Not hard for anyone to see, that can attend to personal hygiene at least.
LOL.. ok.. So Fox News is Truthiness and all liberal-slanted news is lies.. Got it. Thanks.

I’ve been around there long enough to have had mod points regularly, gave it up after not having enough time to do the responsibility justice (oddly, after making that decision my karma went down).
If you’re correct, there are relatively few people that get modded-up who have legitimate questions regarding climate change.
I read at +4 or +5 threshold and my UID is under 600,000.
When they opened-up the politics section, well…
I would certianly like to see this happen with the NEW YORK TIMES i mean fewer readers for that birdcage linner AND DONT EVEN CONSITER PUTTING IT IN MY CAGE OR I,LL GET VIOLENT I,LL PICK OUT SOMEONES EYES SQUAWK SQUAWK
