Weather Is The New News

CTV National News for Dec.23, with Sandie Rinaldo:
Lead story: Jed Kahane – weather report from Montreal (melting), New Brunswick (icy), Toronto (wet).
Followed by: David Akin, weather reporting from Amarillo, TX (storm), Kansas (ice). Chicago (flight delay).
Third Story: Anchor Sandie Rinaldo – weather reporting from London (fog) and Hanover (ice), including “dozens of fender benders”.
Perhaps we ought to start a collection and send them all a calendar.
From the comments

I was in the car this afternoon and heard the 2 o’clock news on AM 640 in Toronto.
The lead story: Marco Pierre White, one of Gordon Ramsay’s mentors, says that frozen vegetables are better than fresh, and science seems to back him up.
The second story: Oscar Peterson has died.
Now I’m no jazz fan, but even I recognize that Peterson’s passing is HUGE news, whereas the veggies … not so much.

It sounds a little like the 650 CKOM Saskatoon news this morning – where they are still leading with the story of a police shooting that happened two days ago.

  1. Any subject to the MSM is like a twitch on a horse. they can only cover one thing at a time.
a week ago it was KHS and BMexPM.
the week before it was Bali
the weeks before that Global climate change
a few years ago SSM (same sex marriage)
for a brief moment in time it was Stephane Dion until they figured out even they couldnt understand him.

  2. Will they report that it is “seasonably cold” in my freakin’ office today? Probably not.
The building I’m in participates in this nonsense —
    http://www.boma.org/AboutBOMA/thegreen/
This being Christmas Eve and there not being many people in the office, building management has probably not turned on the heat. The wankers.
I am not kidding here: I’ve positioned my laptop so that I can easily reach its exhast port from time to time to warm up my hands.
    Humph.

  3. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I see a pattern here. Every December it seems like it snows somewhere in Canada. Probably just one time thing.

  4. I’m wondering if lead story tonite will be the ‘dumping’of Lib.MP Blair Wilson in BC? Not likely..they will just try to find some other way to link Bush/Harper to the bad weather.

  5. At least with weather we don’t have Quebec whining about being a “have not” province and demanding equalisation, special status or the right to opt out.

  6. Pump the climate change, but don’t take us all for fools. Last night, Garth Turner had his story say that Lake Erie was starting to freeze, months later than usual. This morning, after I told him this was an lie, he changed the article to read “weeks later than usual”. Still a lie. The Great Lakes never freeze in October and seldom in November because the water is still too warm. Those of us that live along the Great Lakes, especially Huron, know that we will great snowsqualls till the lake is frozen, hopefully by February. Some years, they never freeze completely. This is not climate change.
Garth doesn’t publish what he doesn’t like either.

  7. Snow = climate change. Fog = climate change. Rain = climate change. Frost bite = climate change. Sunburn = climate change.
    It’s wonderful how it works.
If there’s none provided, the weather always manufactures a lead story.

  8. That they have nothing else to report besides the weather is a concrete an indicator that things are on the whole pretty good right now.
    adeste fidelis

  9. If they couldn’t tell us that it snows in the winter they might have to report some news in Iraq and the bad news there is getting harder and harder to find.
Have little compassion for them, they are still recovering from the trauma of not being able to find the street address in Ottawa where Harper made his announcement.

  10. You’d think the alarmist MSM would give us a couple days off so we could truly enjoy peace on earth.

  11. Sammy, on your comment about Blair Wilson, I’ve noticed that the internet has had a few stories over this past year about crooked or criminal dealings going on in the Liberal party, so because the Liberals are starting to rattle the “Election Chain” how about getting bloggers to compile a list of Liberal crooks and supporters that didn’t make the headlines of the MSM. Seems like a fun way to end the year and maybe we can wake up the 30% of this nation that have been comatose for so long. How about it Kate can we get this train rolling before the end of the year?

  12. I’m actually surprised they haven’t used “Sunrise Earlier Today” or “Sun Edges Closer To Equator” as their lead story. They could probably get a lot of sheeple going with those.

  13. “how about getting bloggers to compile a list of Liberal crooks and supporters that didn’t make the headlines of the MSM”
Excellent idea! I still wonder where in hell/Canada all that HRDC money, over a billion, Jane Stewart in charge, went, although as a humbly grateful Canadian, I should just assume it was all legal and above board.
Weather here in the Okanagan, Sunny, plus 1 c, snowed about four inches yesterday.
    Golf courses: CLOSED!
    Merry Christmas, everyone! 🙂

  14. Someone alert the MSM….
Two days ago,the WHOLE earth started tilting on it’s axis…IN THE OTHER DIRECTION !!
Aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh !! We’re all going to die !!

  15. ‘Bin around for fifty winters, some were winners….some were bummers, but I loved them all!’ (Borrowed from Valdy.) The main point is that they have all been different in a random way. The alarmists have their heads sofa king far up their collective a$$e$ that it is amazing that there are many who actually fall for their misguided bs. Thanks to most of you (the good ones!) for exposing all these idiots on this site.
Have a Merry Christmas and keep the faith. Did any of you see the moon graze by Mars last evening? Climate change caused that too, I am pretty certain! Hahahha

  16. “Two days ago,the WHOLE earth started tilting on it’s axis…IN THE OTHER DIRECTION”
The Earth’s spinning oput of control into the void.

  17. If they can keep our eye on he all important weather, perhaps no one will notice the great success in Iraq and the pressure being brought to NATO to step it up in Afghanistan.
Also, even though there is a mortgage crisis in the USA, both economies are going to survive and do well after a bit of down time in 08.
Harper has done a great job for us, Quebec is not talking separation anymore. The West is more in the Canada than ever before unemployment is at all time low.
The backlash against political correctness, multiculturalism and the HRC is well underway.
But all of this is unimportant if the weather is being weird.
I celebrate the emptiness of the MSM.

  18. Centuries ago, before the masses knew what a total eclipse of the sun was, unscrupulous scientists, politicians and religious leaders used their ability to predict the coming of the frightening darkness as a tool.
    Good work while it lasted.
An Inconvenient Truth ? Just another tool, by a tool 🙂
    Good work while it lasts.
    Nothing is new.
I wonder if the media, back then, intentionaly kept the people in the dark !

  19. You do realize what this means, eh?
This is Canada, where, if we don’t know what to talk about, we discuss the weather.
Seems some people no longer know what to talk about. It does strain the imagination, but maybe they actually ran out of dirt and deceptions.

  20. Now everytime in rains, snows or there is fog it’s Global Warming ,or is called Climate Change…whatever….. Are people nuts??

  21. What’s this?
Freezing weather in Canada in December?
    What’s going on??
Does the UN know about this??!
I WANT my GLOBAL WARMING AND I WANT it NOW DAMN IT!!
/had to ordered another couple of cords of wood though -just in case …seems we’ve burned through a bit more than usual thus far, such a puzzle…
    ;^)
    MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

If those who you are attempting to alarm also have the same perspective, the interior walls of the lower intestine, then the scam is easy. If you already have a shitty attitude the toilet-paper salesman is your best friend… 😉

What ARE they teaching the youngun’s at Rye High these days?

  24. For the last 3 years I have gone to Yellowknife and hauled freight over the ice roads to the diamond mines. 2005 was very cold. 2006 was the warmest season on record, we started late and ended early. There must have been literally hundreds of news reports on the effects of global warming and how the ice road probably wouldn’t be viable in the future.
2007 was colder than normal, the road was ready early and the season ended on the 8 of April only because there wasn’t another piece of freight to be hauled. So far this year it looks like it will be the best season ever, it is colder than normal and the ice is forming well over a month ahead of normal.
There hasn’t been a single news article to be found reporting any of this since April of 2006…

  25. @trent:
Thanks for pointing out what I’ve already suspected. Those AGW supporters busily pulling out the laws of statistics in a manner that old Adam Smith would chortle over, had better find someone that didn’t sully his/her hands when the weather was hot. Otherwise, the motive-questioning is gonna be going the other way.

  27. Sad to hear of the passing of a true giant of jazz – Oscar Peterson. Maybe Vitruvius can include something of his on SDA radio. I might suggest “Canadiana Suite”.

  28. I should mention something in conformance with the Christmas spirit, though. Remember that old saw about naughty children receiving a lump of coal from Santa on Christmas? There was an instructional purpose behind it: a lump of coal, although not fun and exciting, served as fuel for a fire – which keeps people warm. (Of course, this kind of gift would be served up with the usual homilies about how many shivering families would be very glad of the coal, etc.)
The present-day analog, I suppose, would be a training voucher as a “Christmas bonus” instead of cash. Or a job offer from ‘Santa’ instead of cash.
Tells you something about what was considered to be the earmark of a naughty child back in the aulden days. Since ‘Santa’ seems to have handed the AGW crowd a lump of cold, perhaps the best ‘gift’ they could get is the wisdom that comes with hard-won experience. I’ve had to go through that stage myself when younger.

  30. While on the topic of news. Here’s the response that I got to my letter of criticism regarding the CBC’s massive bias and crooked behaviour regarding the CBC Questions to Pablo aka CBCGate.
    Hi Denis,
First and foremost, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Your comment: “Let me further assure you that CBC Television has built an enviable reputation in Canada and around the world for the high quality of its journalism. We have worked hard to earn that honour and we are proud of it.” is not accurate.
The CBC is regarded as extremely biased (Read Political Correctness/Left Wing nonsense gone mad) Globally and if you don’t know that, you’re living in a vacuum.
The CBC pre-Pearson was what you say but for the last many years it has only gotten worse, to the point that I, as a life long listener, am on the verge of working to have the CBC dismantled as a dysfunctional organ of Canada.
Sorry to say this, but I believe it to be true.
    Regards,
    Pat

    Dear Pat Patrick:
Thank you for your e-mail of December 15 addressed to Vince Carlin, CBC Ombudsman. As you know, Mr. Carlin asked me to reply.
You wrote to draw our attention to allegations that a CBC Parliamentary reporter had suggested questions to a Liberal Member of Parliament. The questions were to be directed to former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney during the Common’s ethics committee hearings last week. This is “bias,” you wrote, and has “crossed the threshold of good management.”.
Let me begin by saying that I sincerely regret that you are disappointed in CBC. I can assure you that the CBC prides itself on the excellence of its journalism. We take very seriously any assertion that our journalism is inaccurate, biased or unfair, or in any way fails to meet the rigorous criteria set out in the CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.
These are serious allegations, and ones that we take very seriously. While we expect CBC reporters to be vigorous and persistent in the pursuit of stories, at the same time, we cannot condone any activity that would compromise our integrity or the credibility of CBC News.
However, let me emphasize that the circumstances in this case are not yet clear. We are continuing to investigate, and if it is warranted, I can assure you, we will take appropriate action.
Let me further assure you that CBC Television has built an enviable reputation in Canada and around the world for the high quality of its journalism. We have worked hard to earn that honour and we are proud of it. Our journalists make every effort to conduct themselves in accordance with our code of journalistic ethics and report truthfully, accurately and fairly. This is a matter of both corporate policy and professional pride.
Thank you again for your e-mail.
Finally, it is also my responsibility to inform you that if you are not satisfied with this response, you may wish to submit the matter for review by Vince Carlin, CBC Ombudsman. The Office of the Ombudsman, an independent and impartial body reporting directly to the President, is responsible for evaluating program compliance with the CBC’s journalistic policies. The Ombudsman may be reached by mail at the address shown below, or by fax at (416) 205-2825, or by e-mail at ombudsman@cbc.ca

  31. On my mother’s side, my great grandfather left Quebec many years ago to work in the textile mills of Methuen, Mass. On my father’s side, my grandfather left England (not UK or Britain) to do whatever also in Methuen. Here in Mt Vernon, Ohio, it is 30 F with a quarter inch of snow on the ground. I never cease to thank my grandparents.
Merry Christmas to all! And may God bless you and yours in the Great White North. Beauty way to go! Cold as Hell.

  32. Consider this,
The population of the planet is in the neighborhood of 6,602,224,175 (Yahoo July 2007 est.) –note the accuracy.
The US State Department (Canada ministry of such doesn’t really care?) recognizes 193 independent countries.
All over the world things are happening, there is all kinds of goings on, this country, by the definition of those who ‘really know’ is some kind of ‘multicultural mosaic’ nonsense.
The news we get is approximating silliness. Perhaps most Canadians don’t care what is going on in the world so we see on the news supposedly ‘national’ that it rains in Toronto, that it snows in parts of Canada in the winter. You must admit that is some achievement for the news organizations that pay the reporters.
There is a TV station in Vancouver that in 24 hour period has 90 seconds of news from around the world containing @ 6,569,088,774 people (Canada having pop. of 33,135,401 on 25.12.2007, @ 7:42:15 Eastern Standard Time) with interesting things going on 24 hours a day 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year.
It is possible they can’t fit everybody in.

  33. Maybe the speaker will have a post Christmas gift for Marlene Jennings and Mark Holland, some boxes of?

  34. What I found strange about the MSM lately was the fact that they have some kind of ‘pact’ to never show even a criminal getting shot (not even killed) on the TV news.
And yet, they had no problem running that poor, innocent Polish guy getting tazed and, in fact, dying right before the cameras.
Over and over and over and over and over again.
And just when you thought you had seen the last of it, they were still running it over a month later.
Bizarre MSM taste there, to say the least.

  35. And did you that the Trans Canada was/is closed near Revelstoke due to avalanche danger? Avalanches? In Canada? In the Rockies in the winter?Darn them Swedes and importing that danger here. Heh. Merry Christmas all.

  36. Lev, 7:48 PM: “The population of the planet is in the neighborhood of 6,602,224,175 (Yahoo July 2007 est.) –note the accuracy.”
    You mean: note the precision.

  37. I’ll have to agree with Mary’s comment about the lakes freezing, and I’ll bet I’ll still live to see the side roads again being “plowed” with bulldozers, I believe it was the winter of 76 the last time it occurred.
My youngest daughter and I where watching Stardust tonight and in the previews beforehand we where offered a glimpse of cute little polar bears and their new found struggle with climate change, of course my thirteen year old had an Al Gore moment, while I tried to plant something there to counter the insanity the left likes to spread around like its helpful knowledge rather than the garbage it is.
    Merry Christmas everyone

  38. Mugs, Don’t you know the polar bears are busy playing with penguins, at least according to Coca-cola corp. Ya just gotta luv commercials these day.

  39. Another classic Robert Fife schoolyard moment tonite on CTV.He tried to diss PMSH because ‘only a handful of visitors’ have been to You tube to view the PMSH Christmas message…not near the hundreds of thousands that saw the Queen’s.
Poor Fifer …didn’t get his in the mail like most of us…he’s bitter I guess.
    Does he ever get embarrassed?

  40. “if it bleeds it leads”
I sold some footage to the news in BC back in the 90’s, a car wreck I happened upon, and as I had a betacam with me, I dived in and shot some tape. When I phoned the CBC, they wanted to know if there were fatalities and when I answered no, just a truck flipped on it’s roof, they said no thanks. So I sold it to the local CTV affiliate.
Bad news $ell$, so don’t expect to see good news on TV, unless it is some puff piece to show how balanced they are.

  41. Trent, thanks for the ice road weather report. Perhaps you could blog it, with katte’s assistance, along with a photo or two.
