Open Question: What Percentage of Canadian conservatives are actually “conservative” ?

In his latest video, Matt Ross poses an interesting hypothesis: Most people in Canada self-identifying as “conservative” aren’t actually conservative.

This made me think of this litmus test: What percentage of people in Canada would support actual competition in healthcare? Might it be less than 1% ?

  1. Joe Jackson explained it in his thoughtful tune … Forty Years

    Where I come from

    They don’t like Americans much
They think they’re so loud, so tasteless, and so out of touch
Stiff upper lips are curled into permanent sneers
    Self-satisfied

    Awaiting the next forty years
    Once allies cried and cheered
But it was forty years ago

It’s been 70+ years ago … and thanks has been turned to permanent sneers.

  2. Canadians, like Americans, tend to be conservative unless they are big city dwellers, academics, civil serpents/corporate minions and/or living off the government. Somehow, female is a tipping factor even when none of the above apply. “Can do” is the conservative’s motto, while “will complain and interfere” characterizes leftists.

  3. I figure Canada is about 35% consecutive and 65% liberal/socialist. The US is same numbers but reverse. ie mostly conservative.

      1. Shy and unassuming. Gave up their shotgun willingly because their wife and daughter feel bad for the pheasants. Don’t show up to vote.

        1. He asked for a “definition”, not a “word association game”. But I must admit that, had a collection of prize Canadian stereotypes been called for, yours there would have been pretty darn good.

  4. About 35%.The same portion who refuse to vote at all.
We are not conserving anything when offered the choice to vote for the “least evil choice” from our UniParty.
The actual Alberta referendum may truly shock our political class.
If 35% of those who still vote turn out the 35-40% who don’t..all bets are off.

  5. What percentage of people in Canada would support actual competition in healthcare? A number of years ago while I gave the Conservatives one last change and I was on the riding EDA Board, I posited that when the Candidate asked what we could do improve health care and the response I got was such that I could no longer give them any support. Perhaps a third of self described conservatives might be sympathetic to the notion but would never make it policy for fear of losing the mindless mushy middle and arming the media against them. I would guess 5% at most and many of those likely went over to Mad Max and the solitude that accompanies principled conservatism which is really just variously compromised libertarianism.

    1. This is a discussion Canadians seem incapable of having.
      The Emoters blow up immediately.
They insist the 50% of our economy we are wasting on government run healthcare is “Free healthcarw and “If it saves one life”..
That we lose about 30 000 to medical accident and incompetence ,plus another 15000 to Medical Murder is taboo.
So a system that absorbs 50% of all tax dollars, kills 45 000 citizens per annum , while providing terrible service and results..Is “The best in the world” “You Nazi MAGA Monster!

The question of “What is a conservative”?
Has fouled us up for decades, maybe there are none left in Canada..
For we have left the Libtards define what a “Conservative ” shall be and their definition does not include me.

Possibly the Canadian Conservative solders on,working the dark economy and avoiding the polling booth..
Conservatives do not believe in futile actions, such as voting for the “Best Lizard” AKA “the least evil option.
Once you see the UniParty you cannot unsee it.

When Alberta declares its Independence of Can Ahh Duh,we will get to see whether any conservatives remain.

  6. Very very few. That is why Canada as currently organized is doomed. Polievre is not the answer. His resume is thinner than PM Zoolander’s.

    1. ” Polievre is not the answer. His resume is thinner than PM Zoolander’s.”

I don’t worry about his resume as much as I worry about the fact that he is not an actual conservative.

  7. Inspired by the genius of Jason Arday, I suggest we start with the sample of Conservative MPs.

    1. Speaking of Jason Arday…. He was found dead today. They are studiously avoiding citing a cause. He had to have committed suicide.

      1. My theory….he was wacked because he was about to expose the creepy underbelly of how the DEI crowd works at Cambridge….and else ware….credentials be damned

  8. I see no future for Conservatives in Canada . Programs like equalization will feed the beast that keeps the left in power . The people running the Conservative Party know full well they can’t tamper with that sacred cow . Add to that the whore media are quite successful at spreading the left’s bullshit .

  9. So many who claim to be conservative have little idea what it means. They seem to identify it as just opposition to modern liberalism; that is, in partisan terms.

So we have this bizarre sight of self-aclaimed conservatives being avid supporters of Donald Trump, who is nothing like conservative. Ronald Reagan is rolling over in his grave.

    1. “So many who claim to be conservative have little idea what it means. ”

      Oh, THE IRONY!

      (wow…even for you, that’s tone deaf…)

      1. Says someone who worships Donald Trump, the guy who introduced one of the biggest tax increases in US history, stymies free trade, keeps adding to the US’s collection of state-owned companies, has no respect for the rule of law when it applies to him, welches on deals with other nations so that he can extract more money from them, continually talks of annexing other territories, and has zero use for fiscal prudence.

        Oh, the ironing.

        1. “Says someone who worships Donald Trump”

I worship no one, idiot…when Trump does something I disagree with (like trying to negotiate with Iran), I say as much.

But you calling yourself a conservative is still unintentionally hilarious.

        2. Careful with that ironing, you’ll crease your pants. When I am moved to honest worship, I worship the Lord. When I want to play at worship, I prefer Thunderfish. And I will cheerfully affect a show of worship for any man who picks up my bar tabs. (Decent, manly, entirely heterosexual worship, of course; don’t get your hopes up, GYM.) You’ll notice Trump doesn’t make the cut.

I do recognize that Trump is the best man for America at the moment. When the moment passes, I’ll reassess, but until then, I’ll look for something better to piss and moan about.

    2. Well Killer, why don’t you give it your best shot?
“So many who claim to be conservative have little idea what it means.”
So what does “being conservative” mean?
You self profess to be such..
      Please enlighten us all.

  10. Canada has no future.
The only guy remotely conservative in Canada is Max Bernier and he polls less than 1% most days.
If we could somehow get a conservative government again the Liberal senate would block everything anyway.
Talking to Canadians about politics is very much like watching The View.
They have strong beliefs backed with no facts and cannot understand the concept of basing political opinions on evidence instead of emotional fantasies.
    Welcome to Venezuela North.
I’ve talked friends around to admitting they are wrong. Their logic is wrong and their facts are wrong. I can get them to agree to both. Then five minutes later they reset to their initial illogical stupidity and repeat themselves.
Logic cannot affect someone’s opinions which are not based on logic.

    1. “Talking to Canadians about politics is very much like watching The View.”
      ha ha ha !!!!
who is the canaduhian equivalent of whoopi? joy? (oh she’s a real ‘joy’)

  11. Maybe but very few Liberals are liberal and most NDPers are neither new nor democratic. I’m okay with conservatives that are also believers in classical liberalism.

  12. There is a reason cons and GOP are called the STUPID partys, they are also the cultists….ERM, ‘religious’ ones

  13. 75% of Canadian jobs are in the service industries producing only 28% of GDP.
(Medical and legal services are part of that statistic.)
Only 25% of Canadian jobs actually produce something.
The keyboard tickler society is a feckless banal and frankly stupid subset of society. Their politics are “emo” as their needs are not needs but rather desires and they don’t know the difference. Brand it any way you like but the facts are that the electorate is stupid.
