  1. The annual cost of a TV licence in the UK is £180 for a colour licence and £60.50 for a black and white licence. This fee is required for households watching or recording live television broadcasts or using BBC iPlayer.

Well … the good news is you won’t DIE waiting in line to obtain your TV license like you do in the NHS ER

  2. The growing trend in the UK is cancelling the licensing (which is required on live broadcasts). Disgruntled users that cancelled are now going to streaming services exclusively. The licensing is done to pay for the BBC exclusively. They claim that it keeps the BBC out of direct control of the government. The average licensing cost is 180 Euros per year. Last year, the BBC claimed they lost over $1 Billion in revenue due to cancelled licenses. At the same time, the estimated cancellation for 2025 was reported as 500,000 users. That math does not add up. Either the BBC is padding the loss numbers. Or the media is undercutting the number of actual cancellations. I can think of ulterior motives for both scenarios.

Eventually, the BBC is going to go to the government of the UK and request appropriation (much like Canada’s CBC)….at the same time they are going to double dip on those stupid enough to continue paying the licensing amount.

  3. 3 months ago in Switzerland…
“Swiss voters have rejected an initiative to sharply reduce the annual licence fee to the national broadcaster, the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SBC).
The fee, which has already been cut in recent years, currently costs 335 Swiss francs (£320; $435) per household per year.
The initiative, backed by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party, had called for the fee to be cut to 200 francs (£190; $260), annually, with businesses exempt.
But the proposal was defeated in Sunday’s referendum, gaining only 38% support, with 62% voting to keep the licence fee at the current level.”

none of this makes sense to me.

Today, Switzerland is voting on a plan to hard cap the population of the nation at 10 million. The BBC says the vote will be close… I don’t know when final figures on this vote will be known.

    1. An AI summation on the state of Tv licensing in Britain..
“TV license evasion cases account for approximately 10% to 12% of all criminal prosecutions in England and Wales. Because this offence is handled through the streamlined Single Justice Procedure, it makes up an even higher portion—upwards of 50% of all convictions at magistrates’ courts.

      Women In Prison
Key Statistics on TV Licence Prosecutions:
Total Volume: Historically, roughly 130,000 to 180,000 individuals are prosecuted each year for failing to pay the fee.

      The Times
Demographic Skew: Women make up 70% to 75% of all TV licence convictions, primarily because they are more likely to be at home during daytime enforcement visits.

      The Times
Court Strain: The high volume has prompted ongoing public debate, with many critics arguing the cases “clog up” court resources and suggesting the offence should be decriminalised. “

    2. Just curious … how many of those ballots were counted 7-days after voting was closed in Switzerland? How many mailed-in, or drop-boxed ballots were counted … with no ID?

      1. “Voting in Switzerland is the process by which Swiss citizens make decisions about governance and elect officials. … The polling stations are opened on Saturdays and Sunday mornings but most people vote by post in advance. At noon on Sunday voting ends and the results are usually known during the afternoon.”

  4. $1.58 billion to the CBC
There are approximately 20 million net taxpayers in canada.

So merely $71.82 per net taxpayer…

Can we switch to a TV licensing fee instead, then the 300k people that watch the CBC can pay for it.

  5. So in UK you have to pay for propaganda through your taxes and you have to buy a license to watch it.
In the USA you get your propaganda for free.
Now, to figure out why they call it TV programing.
ps: I quit watching in spring of 2020

  6. Britain: a stupid little country where you can carry a jagmeet knife but not a jack-knife.

    1. But the jagmeet knife is strictly “ceremonial”, doncha know? I should be allowed to carry my “ceremonial” AR15.
