“A key role, uh, in how much money will fix, and how much jobs will make in a sustainable way.”
Columnist Greg Weston sets aside the English-to-English translator the rest of media have been using to cover for Stephane Dion’s mangled English;
In the same interview, Dion was recounting a conversation he once had with the Swedish environment minister, recalling he once asked her “why there are so much, uh, so good to combine a strong economy and environmental success.
“They pretend they will be able to be zero emissions for 2020. I’m not sure they will succeed, but in doing so they will not kill the economy.”
Though his points are valid, I disagree with Weston that Dion’s reference to “killing the milk cow” was simply an ill-chosen metaphor for the Albertan economy. I think it exposes a much deeper issue for the LIberal leader. Efforts to improve pronunciation will do nothing to broaden his understanding of Western Canada’s historically troubled relationship with – and hostility towards – federal politicians whose fortunes are tied to the interests of Ontario and Quebec.
As badly as he speaks English, that’s not the primary problem for Dion’s prospects in the West – it’s what we’re learning in the translation.

I doubt whether Dion will be Liberal leader for very much longer. The Liberals, as befits their nature, will be ruthless if they think he will could be a liability in their quest for renewed power. Dion has no “machine” in the party, unlike the Martin rock-crusher. Thus he can be dropped without too much internal strife. Watch for a deal bewteen Rae and Ignatieff, the sudden “retirement” of Dion to a plush sinecure, and for the Liberals to resume their clawback of power at any cost.
Never mind folk who are tied to quebec, who wants to be ruled by France?
Take your cheese and go,
There’s that “sustainability” jibbering again from the Fraco-commie. Dion burps it up like a looped audio file.
If Weston wants to do the public a favor as a “translator”, he’ll press Dion for a true definition of his “sustainability” concept.
I’ll wager that definition (no matter how garbled) will include 3 things:
1) Eviceration of constitutional exclusivity of provincial jurisdiction over resources and private property.
2) A direct federal bureaucratic attack on Alberta’s oil patch
3) Tax payer funded give aways to communist nations selling “carbon credits”..China being the prime carbon credit vendor he want’s to put on our Kyoto “susrainability” vendor’s list.
Stephanie…”sustain” this!! ( holding my middle finger up in a “sustainability” salute) ๐
“…federal politicians whose fortunes are tied to the interests of Ontario and Quebec.”
Given the number of votes in those two provinces it’s simply impossible to have a federal politician who isn’t beholden to Ontario and Quebec. If Harper actually gives up 50% of our (Alberta’s) resource revenues to correcting the “fiscal imbalance” then he’s proven he’s on the slippery slope to eastern appeasement.
The Lieberals will NEVER understand the West. Hard work and prosperity are foreign entitities to the socialists of the East. They (although not all) understand only one thing…the West IS the milk cow ripe for the picking(udder pulling??). I do not blame the East, I blame the sheeple of the West for not standing up and saying f&*k you to the East. Either treat us right, or we are gone.
Another 1.5 BILLION Western loonies for Queerbec? Is PMSH stupid, or just trying to get votes?? Thank God I am leaving this socialist/commie country…and yes…I have visited more countries in this world then most people know exist, and we are below “banana republic” status in most of them.
So… Dion cannot effectively communicate to English Canada in its own language.
Remember what Liberals have always said about Preston Manning’s inability to communicate to Quebecers in their own language?
Well, the shoe’s on the other foot.
Don’t hold your breath for Dion to even bother to pretend to take English lessons to improve his command of the language.
My… what an excellent choice the Liberals have made for the man they think will make them competitive in the next election.
I can see the gaffes already… no way will Dion survive the next election.
Appease the east to get a majority. Then we can get things fixed – the real hidden agenda. Senate reform, top of list. Remap electoral districts to reflect new population distribution across geography. Stop cutting the cheese and free domestic markets. Make flows of our money into blackhole Crown Corporations quite transparent – where is that Tsunami money?
Can someone help translate into Quebecois “how dare you talk about easy money in the north when we all know that easy money is delivered in brown envelopes”?
China . . the major vendor of Kyoto hot air credits, the builder of a new, old technology coal fired electrical power plant EVERY week for the next ten years, the same China who has refused to even discuss Kyoto2 – except when it comes how many “credits” they can sell.
If global warming is such a threat to humanity, then why isn’t David Suzuki camped out in Beijing slagging the Chinese ??
The great scam is running past redline and will soon blow a gasket.
I think Steff sounds like Borat.
“I make explosion in western piples heads”
Well we got rid of Paul “Mr. Dithers” Martin… why not Stephanie “mumbles” Dion? ๐
I just watched Dion’s speach to the T.O board of trade, I noticed that he made a reference to getting back to the way Chretian-Martin ran things, Now that should go over like a lit firecracker.
Ya that makes real good sense lets return to having our taxes go into Liberal Pockets with little teasers being handed out to keep the social activist happy.
I noticed also that he was trying very hard to speak slower in English, I guess he figures we will understand him better.
cal2 said: “I think Steff sounds like Borat.
“I make explosion in western piples heads”
Now that’s funny….Borat Dion ๐
Good one Cal2. “Please to be giving me all your easy moneys or they will be making punishments on me.”
Borat Dion-
Cultural Learnings of Alberta for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Quebecistan
” can I put spy camera in Stelmach toilet?”
“there are many izzy jobs in Alberta , make the izzy money, labourers for mans and for womens – high living prostitute”
Borat Dion:
“this is my wife….”
“this is my other wife….”
“this is my boyfriend….”
“this is my mistress…..”
“and this one I have to pay for….but it worth it….SACRE BLEU!”
…while I like Greg Weston’s columns, he’s tending to sound a bit eastern biased with his recent ramblings. (Same with Ottawa Sun cartoonist Susan Dewar…pretty lame and slanted – well today’s is ok, but usually bashes Harper.)
But Weston missed a greatest point…DrWright said in an earlier post (10:47) “…who wants to be ruled by France”.
Bingo. Well at least for the Rest of Canada. Mind you Quebec might get her knickers in a knot thinking about that point too.

The Sun newspaper chain (Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, London) is owned by Quebecor company, one can wonder the amount of influence that comes from the cheque writers…?
Same with Canoe.ca who hosts the online Sun versions…their “Picture of the Day” for the past couple of years have been anti-Bush and anti-Iraq war.
Check today’s Picture of the day…left column, midway down, shows a lady injured from a Baghdad blast.

No wonder the MSM is loosing ground to readership.
Someone tell celine dion that the reason the libs are not in power is because of the way martin/chretain did things. On second thought, don’t tell him, let him promise to bring back GroupAction, brown paper bags, bissons blackberry and many other things. Now the libs want an investigation into income trusts. Aren’t the rcmp doing that re Scott. And, the new rules do not go into effect for 4 years, so why did anyone panic the day after the announcement. Will martins private doctor give back the ill gotten millions he made from the bank tip from scott. How about all the others who gained from goodales goof.
Dion wants to tax the hell out of albertans, but doesn’t think corporations should pay tax. Is he a shareholder in CSL. Will martin have to pay taxes on his companies profits, how about magna.
Willl bs be in the shadow cabinet. Dion said he still has to make many phone calls, so how many of his caucus have said thanks but no thanks. Again today in his speech it was full of I want, I will etc. so those other sitting libs know they have no say. What a control freak and dictator.
Let me see if I get this:
I make sustainabliteee important issue in eeconameee by pulling cash cow we can lower emissions in oil patch benefiting me in getting votes in Quebec. Companeees that want to do more will get more from companeees that don’t want to do more in sustainabiliteeee and we also give credits to China, to make better environment, like Europe. Also credits for tax for peoples who want sustainabiliteee and no climate change by buying fridges in their homes.
Bend over Stiffane Dion is coming West to help us?
In true Librano fashion.
Dion’s “make easy money in Alberta” will stick to him like proverbial “S^*T” sticks to a blanket, particularly if Western Canadian talk show hosts wake up to what the the commie wannabe with French citizenship has in mind for Canada.
now borat dion wants to inject CO2 into the oilsands.
that should render alot of it unrecoverable, corrosive and untouchable.
the patch injects or disposes of CO2 where it is economical, practical and safe, and sometimes in the deeper horizons where it is miscible , even for recovery. sticking it in a shallow grave oilsand is a sure way to wreck something.
“is not the izzy money, izzy work so craved by pollytichuns , making the izzy life for alberta – and we being steal the moneys in quebecistan-”
I agree that the problem with Dion is not, as Greg Weston is trying to trivialize, simply his ‘pronounciation’. Nonsense. He can’t speak English. Period. And it’s both the structure and vocabulary – nothing to do with pronunciation.
But above all, it’s what Dion is saying. He’s authoritarian – deeply authoritarian; Chretien’s authoritarianism of running the country from his office for his agenda is nothing to what Dion will do. Chretien attempted to cajole, bribe and buy his way to power. Dion is pure Force. Do it or else.
The Liberal party cannot ‘dump’ Dion. Dion himself wouldn’t permit it; he’d fight it and he has the Chretien BackRoom Boys on his side.
As for Harper and Quebec – it is a FACT, that our political reality, via our constitution and charter, sets up Quebec as the lynchpin of governance. It gives Quebec, no matter its population base, a basic 75 seats. Its bilingualism sets up Quebecers as the majority in our entire civil service and unelected government authority. So, whether we like it or not, we ‘have’ to pander to Quebec, until the CPC gets a majority – and can begin to change this undemocratic structure which Trudeau and the Liberals set up.
The tactic of the Liberals now, is to take the light off of Dion. Keep him and his words and language problems in the background. Use a Greg Weston to claim that it’s merely the problem of The Listener, for we don’t understand his pronunciation. Make us feel guilty for not accepting Dion’s inability to speak English (vs Manning’s French) and his dual citizenship.
Then, smear any and all CPC members and actions; the Liberals must be moving bigtime into a smear campaign. They are doing this, to equate the Adscam publicity with ..whatever they can find about Conservatives. They’ll be doing that a LOT in the next few moonths. The agenda. To make Adscam equivalent to whatever trivia they find out about the Conservatives.
Dion remains a centralist; committed to big authoritarian government, rejection of individual rights and responsibilities, the nanny state mode of existence – and lots, lots, lots, of emotional issues and rhetoric.
He’s been talking about the ‘sustainable economy’ for years; it’s a truism. All economies must be sustainable, both in fiscal and resource factors.
His only agenda is, like that of Chretien – power.
want Quebec to leave?
Stop eating their cheese.
Weston’s piece was an apologetic for Dion. Notice it was about Dion’s use of English…not about the context of his statements. Weston will bend over backwards to find some way to bash Harper and the CPC (check out his comments re: Ambrose and the environment)but this op-ed was ever so polite toward Dion.
If Weston was reading SDA, why was there no mention of the Group Action ‘slip’ or the ‘easy money’ insult?
Borat Dions speech this morning.
the part where he talked about how strong Jean made the country economically.
Funny how the Liberalโs alienation of our number 1 trading partner resulting in years of closed borders to beef and softwood lumber werenโt mentioned.—
“liberals make western piples head explode”
CBCpravda spends more ink and electrons on lactating mothers than they spent on two of the longest shutouts of western canadian products in history.
One would hope that the M S M stop “interpeting” dions “english” they did that for years for that little thug cretin let a consertive make the kind of dumb statements and see how quickly the leftys in the media savage them. The lieberals get a pass on their arrogance. One more reason to go to the blogs for the real news without the spin
“Two years ago, the respected Christian Science Monitor (CSM) did an in-depth analysis of the implications of this planned coal-fired plant construction in China, India and the U.S. It estimated these 850 plants will put five times more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than Kyoto is designed to remove, even if every other country, including Canada, miraculously hits its Kyoto target.
Even if new plant construction was limited to only those with a start date, it would still mean putting over twice as much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as Kyoto, fully implemented, would remove.” (Lorrie Goldstein, Toronto Sun 16 Jan 07)
What would Mr Dion’s reaction be to this? I have yet to receive a satisfactory answer to this argument: if global warming/climate change & injustice is such a catastrophic problem (4.5 billion “dead”), why is it OK to wait until 2020, and beyond (likely never) for compliance from China, which though second to the US in emissions, is growing theirs faster than any country.
Mr Dion, please spare me the Liberal/Trudeau “social justice” rhetoric. Why should Canada dismantle its economy, so China et al can burn up oil and coal?
I hope Canadians don’t fall for this one.
I would like to debate Mr Suzuki, BTW. Are you up to my challenge, sir?
(I didn’t think so)
Jeepers!! Damn CBC is covering Dion again this morning saying how he is going to solve greenhouse gas problem and Canada will make millions from it. These clowns don’t even question him how he will do it or anything. They are treating Dion like he is already the PM. Makes me wanna wretch.
Funny, but when I read quotes attributed to Dion in the news (except for Weston), his english seems to be perfect! I don’t know what the problem is? /sarc off
Seriously, I think we need to pay close attention to the direct quotes in the news to see if the words are “unmangled”…if so, then the MSM are paraphrasing without saying so…I think this would be a bad thing for a journalist to do, no?
well, one un-intended consequence of citoyen dion’s insult to the rig workers in northern Alberta will be the blow-back by the families of the kids who are “ruining our economy”…with the exception of the elitist trough wallowers, literally everyone in Ontario and the maritimes is related to, or knows personally, someone who is working in the oil patch….in fact, it is a bragging right if you have a son or daughter making the big bucks….I can just see all the moms at the rink discussing this, and asking why the emperor of France is dissing their kids….this one will cost him, no matter how much the MSM tries to make it go away
See and get da cash at lib.ca. Bring da brown bags to da Milkman; wad’s a cubble millions stolen, eh?

flipping channels last night I hit the current CBC icon George Alphabetsoupius , they did a news run down thing that was a 3 minute US and Bush bash.
Heres hoping the yanks pull the defense curtain back from Canukastan , lets see the sustainability of the “not for profit ” health care system and the welfare state when Canaduh and Quebecistan have to pick up their own share of the real bills.
Canada is like a nasty teenager – dissing Mom in front its “friends” and then running under the skirts or hiding behind daddies wallet or economic power.
kingstonlad…that’s aassuming the hear about it! I’ll ask again in case I’m misinformed here:
Did anyone see a report in papers or on the tube re: Dion and the ‘easy money’?
The MSM is being very protective of Dionas usual…and Weston is doing it bigtime!
To start off with, I am sympathetic to the argument that M Dion put forward about Lumber Mill scrubbers. Yes he is correct that if your government creates regulatons first that set a standard and technologies are developed to meet those standards you can sell them to others who follow your standard….whew that was a mouthful….
The above is a happy example of government regulation, there being so many sad examples. the government sets the table to create lead buyers. It can work, but only if the problem is real and the solution real. I would be curious how much of the scrubber technology development was subsidized by the Scandanavian government, how long they operated without other buyers? Once again it was based on them being first to do something appropriate.
On the negative side I see the old Bombardier fast train thing is ont he table again, this time lined up as environmentally friendly.
I wonder what the calculus would be of creating a line between toronto and montreal that had zero, and I mean non, land crossings….all roads need to go underneath or overtop of the tracks. How much C02 would be expended constructing that? along with all of the concrete creation needed for the overpasses and etc and how that would line up with flights between toronto and Montreal….would it be one days of flights, one year or 100 years?
And if the thing is of such vital national importance shouldnt we just compel Bombardier to build it, I mean nationalize it, its the fate of the planet right? (I am being sarcastic just in case anyone is wondering) Certainly we should force the owners to stop taking dividends while it is being done, who owns it again? (this one is serious)
I will say though that politically speaking I suspect the argument that the government is missing out creating a green industry is one that will likely resonate, not saying it is correct but it will resonate.
I liked the Globe’s take today that perhaps the tories are setting it up so they will adopt Arnie’s plan for California, one that makes a little more sense. If you have to do something that would be soemthing I would explore.
‘Among other things, he (Dion) wants Canada to become a world leader in carbon sequestration, the process of sealing potential greenhouse emissions underground, in Alberta’s oil sands.
“If we can make Fort McMurray a centre for sustainable development, we will be able to do it everywhere in the world,” he said.
On transportation, he drew applause when he said: “I think it’s time to consider fast trains in Canada. If we were able to have Montreal to Toronto, downtown to downtown, in three hours instead of five hours, how many of us will take the train instead of the plane?” (CBC 16 Jan 07)
Of course, Mr Dion, when government directs economic activity, everybody makes profits, right? NOT!!
Now I see the light; we will pipe CO2 into old mineshafts and hide them from the big, bad sun. Talk about leading edge technology!
Yes, Canada can lead the way in bridge and hybrid technologies. The Dion plan will not achieve this because he thinks we can cut our emissions BEFORE these technologies are developed, via some new government R&D “parternship” with business.
Is this guy for real? A cursory study of government R&D partnerships reveals abuse, waste and fraud.
Harper has a better idea – accept this issue as a long-term proposition, while telling emitters they will have to develop cleaner technologies (with government helping, not directing), without this obsession with CO2 when so many real pollutants are coming out of tailpipes, smokestacks and oilsands.
Yes, Mr Dion, explain to us how everybody is going to make megabucks, when at the same time we will be dismantling our economy.
Dion needs to take a course in Canadian Economic History, out of which came the “Staple Theory of Economics,” where countries such as Canada, which have rich natural resources, and have developed a prosperous economic system by properly exploiting them.
With a wave of his dirigiste hand, Mr Dion seeks to deny our history; in fact he offers a revisionist history that says we are bad people for daring to develop our mining, forestry, energy and water resources.
It’s better to lecture young people willing to work 14 hours a day in Fort McMurray, that they shouldn’t be just going for the quick buck.
To applause, of course.
I would really like to see the PM go head to head with Dion in a debate. My opinion is that he would destroy him in English as well as French. Dion is such a little twit, that is being polite. I agree that the only good thing that comes out of the East is the sun!
It looks like when the next election is called, we will again be relying on Small Dead Animals to bring the truth out. MSN is probably coming up with some kind of a defense plan…..
Jason Cherniak or Sheila Copps for next Liberal leader?
Please Steve, shamrock,cal2, et.al. It is anti-Canadian to fight. You will be assmilated.Resisitance is futile!!!! Mssr’s Dion and Turdeau the Younger are the way!! Cuba on a Canuckistan level will be achieved!!!Oh…and I almost forgot the Fwannnccce way too!!!
Canadian Sentinel said My… what an excellent choice the Liberals have made for the man they think will make them competitive in the next election.
Actually, I don’t think that the Libs were ever really happy with their choice in Dion and I don’t think any Liberal with half a brain (i.e. the smartest Liberals) thinks he makes them competitive.
My feeling is that, at the Liberal convention, the “anybody-but” camps that were rallying against both Ignatief and Rae (you know, his wife is a Joo) fed off of each other and, in their fervor, they wound up electing someone that made no one happy.
Over the few days immediately following Dion’s coronation, I got the distinct feeling that the Liberal membership felt kind of like one would when they wake up next to someone they otherwise wouldn’t have – if they hadn’t been so drunk the night before.
Good news for Harper in any case.
Anyone catch the story re the Royal Bank. According to US laws, no one with dual citizeship in certain countries can open an american dollar bank account. No one from certain countries can work on american defence contracts, even in Canada. 24 were recently pulled from a Bell factory in Canada. RBC may face fines for opening such accounts for dual citizens. So far France is not on the list, but give dion time and he will mangle a stmt to make france dangerous. These laws re bank accounts were to stop terrorist money from sleeper cells, sympathizers etc. So, is all that money now coming to Canada.
But, how long will it be before the US bans cdn banks in the US, if they open US dollar accounts for dual citizens in Canada.
The thing is – the Liberals have elected a new leader who is unpalatable to the majority of Canadians.
Therefore, the Liberals are moving ‘big time’ into presenting Dion via the MSM – which are Liberal propaganda agents. That enables them to restructure, ‘airbrush’, and present Dion within a cocoon of propaganda. They won’t let him out without a handler who will immediately step in to ‘airbrush’ Dion. Or, they will ensure that Dion is always presented, as an ‘interpretation’ aka Greg Weston, via the MSM.
Therefore, they will present ‘his’ policies via others on the MSM. Not via Dion, they will use others to explain and debate ‘Dion’s policies’. Not Dion.
Then, the policies will have to be presented as emotional entities – Dion will Save the Planet.
How will the Liberals deal with the election debates? They will HAVE to get out of them. They might instead propose a new style of debate, where the leaders simply read a text – and don’t debate at all! They might have a panel debate the text! Above all, the Liberals have to keep Dion out of any direct question interactions. It’s not merely that he’s unintelligible; it’s that he is authoritarian, thin-skinned and contemptuous of people who disagree with him.
And, his agenda is old style Chretien Liberal Party Power. Nothing for Canada. A centralist, Quebec focused, welfare state socialist and rigid anti-entreprenur, anti-individual, Big Government country.
I don’t think any Liberal with half a brain (i.e. the smartest Liberals) thinks he makes them competitive.
A Liberal with half a brain??? That would make him/her a Taliban Jack follower!!
And on ctv this a.m.,following Dion’s speech,Roger Smith struggles to find anything positive,so…he and Kate discuss Dion’s “extreme makeover!” Has new dye job..complete with highlights! Betcha that will sway the RigPigs in Alta. The speech, was so vacuous, that follow-up coverage was a laugh.
Wonder why our little friend Jason is so strangely silent on all this …he’s hell-bent on Katching Khan, and not one word about Weston’s column etc.
Interesting developments over at G&M.I have noticed the neg.comments re Libs, are starting to exceed pos.ones..and are actually getting posted.
OT but: Pat Martin of the ndp is trying to prove that Khan was promised something to cross the floor. He is going after the problem of loans to the liberal riding association by Khan. This goes back to 1996 and fwd. Who ran the association, who failed to file the proper papers, liberal officers of the liberal riding. If Martin keeps trying to make something of this, he will open up the question, Is this normal practice for all liberal ridings, are they all behind in their paper work, have other loans by candidates not been paid back. Typical example of liberal corruption at the riding level. Martin is saying the liberals will not pay back the money to a conservative and if the conservtivs pay it it will prove he was offered something. Martin should take a course in accounting and business. The liberal riding of Khan’s is responsible for all income and debts up to the day he crossed the floor. And why should the conservatives pay back for wrongdoing in 1996-2000-2004. Who is the money owed to-Mr Khan. Same with the income trust investigation, it will show how the liberals made mega bucks from scotts blackberry. Who and how are all the leadership loans being paid back.
We have known for years that the liberals mismanaged our money and put much of it in their own pockets, but we thought it was just at the top. Now, it is coming out it is acceptable practice even at the riding level. Now the liberal riding associatin of former member Khan has been delisted. What does that mean, no lib candidate there in the next election. The polls must be sending very negative results to layton and dion for them to be trying so hard to smear the conservatives. Lets call for an investigation into the activities of all 308 liberal riding associations, and delete all the dead from the voting lists as a start.
Time to dig up all the negatives comments about Mannings makeover and substitue celion dion in them. Why did he need a new dye job, has his many examples of oral stupitidy made him turn grey.
Dion’s poor English competence is a gift which we must exploit to the fullest.
The man simply cannot communicate, and the Liberals know it. That is why others quickly move to stand in front of him to answer for him. That is extremely bad. It shows that he cannot speak for himself. And if he cannot speak for himself, how on earth can the reasonable person expect he’d possibly be able to speak for Canada and Canadians, including on the world stage?
The Liberals are treating their leader as if he has a disability. But it isn’t a disability at all- Dion could’ve long ago mastered English in no time at all. And there’s no indication that he’s even trying now. Probably because he doesn’t care about English Canada at all. Just Quebec. And he actually used to be a separatist! How do we know he isn’t going to revert?
But all that aside, whether he’s a great Anglophone speaker or not, the fact remains: he has so little to say he might as well just keep his little lips pursed like he usually does, tightass-style. Yep- he rarely ever smiles, and where’s the MSM criticism of that? They ridiculed Harper for being stuffy, staid, boring, unsmiling, unemotional. Why do they leave Dion alone, despite the fact that next to Harper, he actually looks like a somber funeral director?
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2007/01/16/dion-toronto.html
Thanks DiDi!
The only people offended by the “milk cow” comment were those ready to feign outrage at Dion over anything.
Those offended by those offended by the “milk cow” comment are simply feigning outrage over anything not said by Dion.
How’s that for Liberal logic?
Wasn’t Landslide Annie implicated in a deal similar to Khan’s? I believe the MSM never even made mention of it?
