Environment Minister John Baird was in Vancouver today touring the devastated Stanley Park. In addition to offering money to help with the restoration of the park he sounded like he has drunk the cool-aide and is now firmly in the climate change camp. Channeling Al Gore, Baird says the recent stormy weather in the west and mild temperatures in the East should be a wake up call to us all. David Suzuki will be very happy. I am not sure I am.
The best idea I’ve read so far on the immediate defeat of militant Islam. The writer compares two different strategies against almost identical enemies. The first being the WWII strategy against Japanese Shintoiism, the second, the current strategy against Islamic Fascism. A couple of excerpts:
“No Substitute for Victory”
Dr. John Lewis
Telegram of Secretary of State James F. Byrnes, transmitting the radio remarks of John Carter Vincent, head of the Office of Far Eastern Affairs, to the supreme commander of the Allied Powers in Japan. From W. P. Woodard, The Allied Occupation of Japan 1945–1952 and Japanese Religions (Leiden: E. J. Brill, 1972).
Shintoism, insofar as it is a religion of individual Japanese, is not to be interfered with. Shintoism, however, insofar as it is directed by the Japanese government, and as a measure enforced from above by the government, is to be done away with. People would not be taxed to support National Shinto and there will be no place for Shintoism in the schools. Shintoism as a state religion—National Shinto, that is—will go . . . Our policy on this goes beyond Shinto . . . The dissemination of Japanese militaristic and ultra-nationalistic ideology in any form will be completely suppressed. And the Japanese Government will be required to cease financial and other support of Shinto establishments.
The telegram is clear about the need for separation between religion and state—between an individual’s right to follow Shinto and the government’s power to enforce it. This requirement applies to Islam today (and to Christianity and Judaism) as strongly as it did to Shinto. In regard to Japan, the job involved breaking the link between Shinto and state; in regard to Islamic Totalitarianism the task involves breaking the link between Islam and state. This is the central political issue we face: the complete lack of any conceptual or institutional separation between church and state in Islam, both historically and in the totalitarian movement today.
As for what we should do about this, the 1945 telegram is direct. Here is its opening, rewritten to substitute Islam for Shinto:
Islam, as it is a religion of individuals, is not to be interfered with. Islam, however, insofar as it is directed by governments, and as a measure enforced from above by any government, is to be done away with.
said FDR,
“…involves the simple formula of placing the objective of this war in terms of an unconditional surrender. . . . Unconditional surrender means not the destruction of the . . . Japanese populace, but does mean the destruction of a philosophy . . . which is based on the conquest and subjugation of other peoples.”
In other words, continued FDR:
“We have learned that if we do not pull the fangs of the predatory animals of the world, they will multiply and grow in strength . . . [they] must be disarmed and kept disarmed, and they must abandon the philosophy which has brought so much suffering to the world.”
Go to the link, it’s well worth the read.

Look at it this way. If the lefties get in, we will go absolutely BROKE trying to meet Kyoto. At least if the CPC are in charge, none of those billions will find their way into Liberano$ hands. Consider it the price to pay to get a majority in Canada.
For whatever stupid brainwashed reason, Canadians ‘believe’ we’re changing the environment. And the actions of 33 million people will have to offset roughly 3,000 million other people who AREN’T going broke trying to meet Kyoto.

The rational approach (for the conservatives) to handle the global warming debate is to:
1) Accept the science (otherwise the media will destroy them)
2) Produce a plan which will reduce CO2 by enough to satisfy environmentalists while not destroying the ecconomy.
3) Advertize a ton about how ineffective the liberals were in dealing with the environment.
Essentially, the only way I can see #2 happening though is if we introduce a consumption tax on the use of non-renewable resources that ramps up over time; the goal would be to encourage industry and consumers to use less energy through adopting new technology and a reduction in usage. If you have a 5% per year tax increase on the consumption of non-renewable resources over 20 years everyone will do everything in their power to reduce their energy usage.
Note: I’m talking from a political perspective, I don’t believe that anything Canada does really has a big impact on the environment being that we have the second largest country in the world, with far more forrests than most other countries and yet a reasonably small population.
Kate,
Here’s another tip regarding the CWB:
http://www.idahowheat.org/news/default.asp?id=2759
In this article, the head of the Algerian state grain purchaser candidly admits that he likes the CWB because the “…(CWB’s) selling prices in Algeria are very low, since our country benefits from preferential prices,”…. “This preferential price saves Algeria several tens of dollars per tonne purchased. No other country gives us such benefits.”
I’d always thought that the premiums the CWB allegedly received in certain markets would be offset by the higher costs associated with servicing those markets, resulting in no net benefit to farmers. Now I’m getting confirmation that not only may these premiums be non-existent, but that the CWB gains market share the old-fashioned way: by offering deep discounts. To add to the insult, it apparently throws in all sorts of non-price goodies to keep the customer happy, which are, of course, paid for by farmers.
How anyone could call this wise marketing is beyond me. Naturally, the MSM isn’t saying boo about these revelations. Hopefully you’ll bring it to the public’s attention.
When they’re not wearing themselves out surrendering to foreign invaders,
the French apparently stand in front of mirrors, practicing being rude.
The land of stinky cheese and worse manners.
Thanks Dennis, I have several CWB items awaiting a roundup.

(1) There is sufficient controversy to suggest that science is dodgy. The media has NO grasp of the scientific arguments and has allowed grant- and publicity-hunting self-proclaimed experts to warp what passes for its mind.
(2) There is no amount of CO2 that will be acceptable because most of the environmentalists are as clueless or more so than the media; and the radical eco people, who tend to be the media darlings, want the earth to be de-populated.
(3)Whilst of short-term value, this begs the question. If the Libs did nothing, that admits that something needed to be done.
The current warm weather here and there (look across the globe: by no means a general phenomonen, even in N. America) is heavily influencing coverage. Massive snowstorms in the Midwest, lower than average temps in B, in Russia etc are not happening in Toronto and Ottawa, so global warming is obviously “true” to the eastern media.
Ontario’s dalton Mcguinty is at it again crying the blues & warning the feds to pay up or suffer the consequences.

wasting Taxpayers money & crying for more, Poor Dalton
NoOne, Have you been drinking the koolaid again?
Accept the (flawed or at least questionable) science? Just like the next ice age they predicted 30 years ago, eh.
Reducing CO2 is a good idea except that there is no level that will satisfy the environmentalists, at least the vocal wingnuts. And those wingnuts are the ones that the MSM love for their sound bites.
Another tax is just the thingto screw up the economy again. Progressives always see taxes, i.e. taxpayers money, as the cure all. Let’s say you do raise the gas tax by 5%. That will make your trip to the grocey store more expensive and guess what? Every item in that store will cost more too because it had to be trucked in. And just what are you going to do for your next vacation? Flying or driving anywhere just got more expensive and when you get there, if it is a canuck destination, a lot of stuff will be closed and gone out of business because the tourism industry just tanked.
There might be a solution out there but it sure isn’t paying third world countries to make more pollution for us while crippling our economy.

A political party that can’t update a website may not be ready to make policies.
It is called grinf**king.
Smile and agree and do minimal things. It is impossible in this environment to properly question. You need to buy the time to let the science speak for itself, which I believe should say this is much ado about nothing.
However, there is no, absolutely no upside to looking oppositional or unhelpful.
If you are perceived to be doing something then the public wont be able to really tell the difference between your plan and someone eleses….you cant outgreen the greens but you can go far enough to capture the mushy middle.
In two to three years time things will be a lot clearer, my personal suspicion is that the big scare will have gone away as the earth begins a small cooling cycle. My personal belief is that the solar cycle drives this and the sun looks to be heading toward a quieter period.
Alternatively, if I am wrong then it will be apparent there is a serious problem and there will be the political will from ALL countries and ALL sides of the spectrum to do something, like was done with CFC’s.
However, I still believe this will turn out to be a scare. It just isnt worth telling people to stop worrying when it is clear they wont. Only time and information will serve us.
BTW China open a new coal fired power plant once a month…..and they are outside the blessed Kyoto….dumb treaty that wont solve the problem even if there is one.
Global Warming Explained
The solar constant isn’t constant. The sun is a variable star.
The vast majority of climate scientists in the world seriously and objectively studies what it is that influences global climate changes. We don’t hear as much from them in the media as we do from the far smaller but also far more vocal minority of climate scientists who make a living by publicizing alarmist and often outrageous claims about man’s detrimental influence on the global climate.
Armed with the very real evidence of the global cooling trend during the first half of the 20th century, climate alarmists claimed in the 1970s that another ice age was imminent. Today they (including even some former proponents of a coming ice age, e. g.: Stephen Schneider), ride a wave of alarm about man-made catastrophic global warming, a wave of alarm they created and keep fueling .
Objective scientists find that the evidence supporting a man-made global warming trend is at best skimpy. However, it cannot and should not be denied that climate changes take place and that they have done so since long before man even made an appearance on Earth.
Based on many different indicators from widely varying sources, it has been found that our sun, a variable star, is a major and controlling influence on the extent and rate of long- and short-term climate changes affecting Earth.*
…
One of the main parties interested in making a living of the man-made-global-warming hoax is Canada’s federal government. It loves “global-warming” because the public’s acceptance of the hype constantly provides new means to collect new taxes and to ram through its agenda for socialization and world-income equalization, until we all are at the same level of poverty, or until the Canadian economy collapses in ruins, whichever comes first.

“So why does their (GPC) website still List Jim Harris as the leader ??”
Fred, the fact that you were specifically looking at the platform page for the 2006 election might have something to do with that Harris is listed as leader. May only won the leadership at the end of August 2006.

Global warming is real, but whether CO2 has much to do with it is debatable. I’m just reading a book called: “Unstoppable Global Warming every 1500 years.” It posits that global warming is a cycle, and that we can’t stop it. Get it and read it, it just came out a couple of weeks ago. John Baird and SH should read it before they make fools of themselves.
“Fred, the fact that you were specifically looking at the platform page for the 2006 election
NO. I am looking at, according to the website, the platform of the Green Party RIGHT NOW , it does NOT say election platform.
Anyone going to that website would get the “Leaders Message” from Jim Green,
Nice spin attempt.
Fred, the link said “Platform 2006”. If the reference to the election isn’t explicit enough, I’m not sure what is.
I’m all for critiquing websites, but I don’t think this is much to cry foul over.
New ENSO Forecasts Based on Solar Model
by Dr Theodor Landscheidt (22 Dec 2003)
IPCC proponents prayer-wheel-wise repeat the mantra that in recent decades the effect of solar activity, still prevalent in the first half of the 20th century, has marvellously disappeared. My correct long-range forecasts of the last three El Niños and the course of the last La Niña, exclusively based on solar activity, and the additional results presented in Figures 4 and 5 of this paper are evidence to the contrary.

Hey, If I vote for May and the Green party, will she make it snow?
Thanks for that clarification Mazz II. You always give clear, concise statements with links. I have learned a lot from you.
I do agree with you, Texas Canuck, buying into the flawed science hoax of Mo tse Strong and Gorby (they wrote the Koyotta thingie) is not the moral or practical thing to do. We know the Mo tse Strong’s ideas for human slavery for the globe and Gorby’s past in the KGB (along with his hatred for United States) and you have a nasty commie kettle of stinking fish! Canadians have been so brainwashed by Liberanos/Dippers/ Sepratistas and the MSM that they fear the weather not loss of their Freedom!
The weather changes – all the time – as Heraclitus said ” the only thing man can be sure of is change” – FACT. The progression of the Equinox’s and Global Tilt at the North Pole have a major impact on weather and as any Astronomy student will tell you we are approaching the era (or time) of Aquarius. Different forces from the our Universe will effect changes on puny, but important, Earth. The Earth shifts on it’s axis every few thousand years with and during the Progression of the Equinox’s. The Chaldeans knew this, the Mayans knew this, the Minoans knew this, the Incas knew this, the Phoenicians, Ancient Greeks and Romans had knowledge of this – and we, in the 21 Century, know about this phenomena. The question is “Why are educated people ignoring the science”?
The ‘StrongGorby’ pull of ‘mini me’s’, people who want to stay dependant on parents of some type forever , are all for dumping their responsibilities and required thinking to be a drone in a cell within the commie world of Habitats for Humanity. The education system has taken the imagination, sense of adventure, curiosity, discipline and ambition out of so many people that many want to be little more than a watered plant.
I believe that with education and a new hope for independence, (Property Rights) people will stop playing the Liberano ‘lay down and keep your mouth shut’ game. The weather scare tactics are silly and with facts and education , people will chose to ignore the idiots and fools who perpetuate such nonsense. Unfortunatly, right now education is in the hands of ‘mini me’ people so the hue and cry of the masses is to ‘fix’ the weather – as if!!!!
Politically, Mr. Baird will mop up some of the mess the Liberanos and their friends left us (like Mac Bloedel clear cutting). Eventually, people will regain their self respect and cattle will move back to fields where they are supposed to live, chickens will not be crammed into crates for a short miserable life.
All plants and creatures deserve respect but the Lord gave Man the top job so Man is responsible for the well being of all life on Earth. We need to be more responsible towards the the Earth, Air and Water that keep all forms of life alive; the Clean Air/Water/Earth Act is on the right track.
People don’t need to be all crammed into the cities – there is so much empty space in Canada. We need an overhaul in this country and I think Mr. Baird is the man to get the job done. When the people of this county regain the belief that they are not ‘helpless’ they will move out of the cities so that they can be people not pawns of the government and showboats like Mo tse Strong, Sazukki and their ilk.
People take care of land and creatures that they own. The Lord is the only Landlord a prosperous people have, IMO.
I saw Elizabeth May on Q. Period Sunday use a CBC’ism. In criticising Harper’s policy in Afganistan she sniffed, using her fingers as quotation marks, “…the so called war on terror, led by George Bush!”
Of course ‘Mr. Burns’ just sat there. No tough question necessary. Used them all on PM Harper earlier.
A few questions came to my mind…
“Do you think the men and women are fighting a fake war, a so called group called Taliban?”
“Do you know that this is a NATO led war, not an American led war?”
“Do you know what NATO is and what it stands for?”
“Do you know anything besides environmental issues?”
“Do you realize CBC’s Peter Pan and CTV’s Giggles & Mr. Burns throw up softballs to you because like any Dipper they don’t take you serious?”
Any other questions out there for Ms. May…?
I think I should explain my point a bit better …
Currently the media in Canada and the United States is pushing “Global Warming” pretty hard; personally, I suspect that this is because they want to ensure that a Republican isn’t the next president and that the Conservatives do not form a majority government. If you attack the science (whether you are correct or not) the media will destroy you, the Liberals will get in power and either pay dictators in the third world or destroy the ecconomy.
What I was saying is you need to accept the science, come up with a plan that looks reasonable and argue that the liberals have done nothing and we will destroy are ecconomy if we attempt to meet Koyoto now.
The beauty of the current state of the government is the Conservatives can work with the NDP to come up with do-nothing legislation on the environment which has lots of Rainbows and Sunshine (something Jack Layton is good at), pass it and destroy this issue.
John Baird’s comments are illustrative of the intellectual and moral bankruptcy of the professional political class. Even British Columbia AGW evangelist Andrew Weaver hasn’t tried to link the recent windstorms to global warming.

Minister links weird weather to global warming
Vancouver Sun
Published: Monday, January 08, 2007
Canada’s new federal Environment Minister John Baird linked weird weather to global warming during a tour today of the windstorm-flattened forests of Stanley Park.
The Ottawa-area Conservative MP noted his riding has enjoyed an usually warm winter, while the West Coast has been hit by wind and snow storms.
For more than a decade, the United Nations Environment Program and most climate scientists have predicted that “extreme weather events” like storms, droughts and floods will become more commonplace because of climate change.
Baird said the damage in Stanley Park was “devastating.”
“It’s demonstrably worse than anything you can see on television,” he told journalists during a planned stop at Prospect Point. “It’s a wakeup call.” …-

U.S. icebreaking ship arrives in McMurdo
1/8/2007 – MCMURDO, Antartica (AFNEWS) — The Coast Guard became part of the Air Force-led Joint Task Force Support Forces Antarctica Jan. 1 with the arrival of the Cutter Polar Sea at McMurdo Station, Antarctica.
Home ported in Seattle, the Polar Sea arrived after a month-long voyage including stops in Honolulu and Sydney, Australia.
The Polar Sea joined the Swedish icebreaker Oden, which began breaking ice Dec. 26.
For the past 50 years, Coast Guard icebreakers have deployed to Antarctica in support of Operation Deep Freeze, where ships have broken through as much as 84 nautical miles of ice to produce a navigable shipping channel into McMurdo Station. This year’s channel will be approximately 23 nautical miles long — 13 of which is first year ice at an average thickness of 3 to 5 feet and 10 of which is multi-year ice at an average thickness of 5 to 11 feet.
This vital shipping channel allows supply ships to deliver more than 6 million gallons of fuel and 4,000 metric tons of cargo, enabling McMurdo Station and South Pole Station to remain manned and operational throughout the harsh winter months. The Polar Sea also acts as a floating research platform for scientists that travel onboard.
Ice breaking operations will continue until the departure of the cargo ship in mid-February when the Polar Sea will return home. …-

Ah, like, let me get this straight; WK is in a snit because little ole’ Bourque News Watch Blog ran a headline about Dion “jay-walking” ?? Ah, ok.
And on the other side you have the CBC(with taxpayer $$) and the huge CTV and Global and TorStar, and the G&M, all runnung stories and headlines that makes one puke. Like Martin saying Harper is scary, hidden agenda, and the ‘Heil’ photo, shaking hands with his son(sooo aaaauful), insinuating religeous fanatism, and on and on.
Like, what’s wrong with this picture ?? For one, do you believe that decades and decades of Liberal govmits handing the CBC $$Billions did not result in a few favourable “news stories” ??
Canadians have a huge, huge problem. It is called the media. From Quebec separatism to regional disparities to Kyoto to Adscam to high taxes to broken medicare,… the Canadian media helped perpetuate the scams, the hoaxes, the myths by giving the Liberals a pass.
And WK gets his s*** in a knot over jay-walking ??
It makes one think that if only, if only the Media gave Canadians the unbiased truth, Harper would be PM for decades.

Goalie mask soldier tribute
By Patrick Maloney, Free Press Reporter
via lfpress.ca
January 9, 2007
Trooper Mark Wilson’s death in Afghanistan has inspired a special piece of art that’s being passed among elite NHL players and may become part of the upcoming all-star game.
Sports artist David Arrigo, a friend of one of Wilson’s relatives, was hit hard by the October death of the London soldier and inspired to design a military-themed goalie mask.
“It just sort of pushed me — this is going to be my addition to thanking the soldiers,” said Arrigo, who has done work for years for the NHL, NFL and other pro sports leagues.
“(But) I didn’t want this piece to be about any one person — it’s more about all the soldiers in Afghanistan.”
The detailed mask design, Arrigo explained, has two distinct sides: The right is called “the mission,” and features images of an Afghani girl reading and a Canadian soldier. The left side, called “the memory,” includes a bagpiper and a soldier pinning a poppy on a wreath.
What could have been a quiet tribute, however, is getting much more attention thanks to the contacts Arrigo and Wilson’s cousin, NHL photographer Dave Sandford, have throughout pro hockey.
The pair are in discussions with at least one goalie to wear the mask in Dallas on Jan. 24 during the all-star skills competition or in the all-star game.
They have also photographed the mask with hockey celebrities such as Don Cherry, who mentioned the project during Coach’s Corner on Hockey Night In Canada. Sandford was to photograph Pittsburgh star Sidney Crosby with it.
Those photos will eventually be posted at nhl.com and on Arrigo’s own website, darrigoart.com. Arrigo’s mask will then be auctioned off on the NHL’s website with the money raised going to the families of fallen troops.
“I’m looking to put a call out to corporate Canada,” Arrigo said. “If they’re not going to bid on the mask, (they could) create some other programs of awareness.” …-

Kyoto sinks Europe:
Billions in costs make it more and more unlikely that the EU can continue to go it alone slashing carbon emissions
BENNY PEISER, Financial Post
Published: Tuesday, January 09, 2007
A political drama is unfolding in Europe over the future of its Kyoto strategy. Its outcome will shape the future of climate policy and international negotiations for years to come.
At the heart of the escalating confrontation lies Europe’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) and mounting concerns about its prospective failure. The crisis centres on a fundamental conflict between economic realism and environmental idealism, between national interest and green ideology. It has exposed the increasing tension between Europe’s green enthusiasm and the realization that its unilateral framework comes at a hefty cost that is beginning to erode the economic stability of a waning continent.
Carbon trading is the EU’s principal strategy for meeting its Kyoto target of reducing CO2 emissions by 8% by 2012. The scheme was launched two years ago in the hope that it would achieve what more than 10 years of political commandeering had failed: significant reductions in CO2 emissions. Instead, year after year, most EU countries continue to increase their greenhouse-gas emissions. Rather than proving its effectiveness, the trading system has pushed electricity prices even higher while energy-intensive companies are forced to close down, cut jobs, or pass on the costs to consumers.
As the reality of economic pain is felt all over Europe, deep cracks in its green foundations are beginning to become apparent. …-

With suspected cdn terrorists captured or killed, does this mean we will now have to listen to years of Poor me, I’m innocent, from another cdn muslim . Will they also sue us for millions. Sorry folks, Harper will not go and petition for their release aka Chretain/khdar. Funny, this story comes the same day as the debut of the mosque farce. I could get real paranoid and wonder what hidden messages will be sent to terrorists in this program. Doesn’t the msm always say OBL is sending messages in code.
Hope those cdns are questioned severly, and give up all the sleeper cells in Toronto.
can there be any other terror besot upon us from the spectre of global warming??

DECISION TIME FOR DION AS JUSTIN TRUDEAU SET TO ENTER FEDERAL POLITICS
Justin Trudeau is set to enter federal politics and seek a seat in the Montreal riding of Outremont, according to a report. Dion has made it clear to some Liberals that the 35-year-old Trudeau is not the star candidate he was seeking…-

John Doyle in the g&m has a column praising LMOTP, saying it is hillarious, and shows that cdn tv is really better than the stuff on american networks. The cbc must really be worried about this show, with all the supposed hype praising it. I will be watching CSI during the time slot. If not that, I might force myself to watch Anderson Cooper. Is he really Gary Coopers son, as has been reported.

Rewriting the Rules of War
By Col. Tom Snodgrass
A curious thing happened in American thinking about warfare in 1961 – the rules needed to be rewritten, or so thought “the best and brightest” civilian strategists that President Kennedy brought with him into the White House. In his book The Best and Brightest, David Halberstam covers how Robert McNamara, McGeorge Bundy, William P. Bundy, Dean Rusk, George Ball, et.al, arrogantly ignored the historical lessons of warfare and set about to change the rules of war. This change has had far-reaching negative effects, even to today.
What was at the root of their hubris?
With the advent of nuclear weapons, many civilian think tank warfare theorists believed that direct superpower confrontation had become too dangerous to contemplate. Thus was born “limited war” in the national lexicon of strategic thinking when the Korean War broke out in 1950 and President Truman limited the war objectives and means in order to avoid nuclear confrontation with the Soviet Union. The Korean War began the change in the American concept of war away from total war, or what was called at the time “general war,” to a form of war that was more “civilized” and “less dangerous” in the minds of social scientists.
The problem of limited war from an American national interest standpoint was that it assumed U.S. enemies would likewise be restrained in objectives and means. This fanciful social science assumption rested on the unproven belief that no foreign national leader in his right mind would dare oppose America, following its World War II victory, once U.S. willingness to fight was made clear. However, the advocates of limited war never came to grips with what would happen if a Soviet Cold War client state refused to “play” by limited war “rules.” In other words, how and when would limited war be concluded when the communists were pursuing total war objectives and the U.S. was waging a war for limited objectives? This was the first appearance of an asymmetry in war strategies long before the now infamous contemporary asymmetry on the so-called Global War on Terror (GWOT) battlefield. The GWOT is more appropriately termed the war against Islam (and the Shari’a touting faithful), but we use GWOT due to its common usage. …-

Margaret Wente is against LMOTP. With the time difference, someone must have watched this by now. I wont.
Who is Dion, really? An interesting take, and will perks one’s ears up.
thetyee .ca/Views/2007/01/09/Masse/print.html
…”the evidence for Dion’s progressive positioning is … pretty thin.
And getting thinner by the week.
The most recent evidence is found in revelations about Dion’s new staff picks. Key amongst them, it seems to me, is Marcel Massé who, according to the Globe and Mail, will be Dion’s principal secretary…”
“More than any single individual, Massé was responsible for designing the systematic gutting of the role of the federal government between 1995 and 1997, when Paul Martin’s unprecedented budget cuts took place.
…. he wanted, as did Paul Martin, to rewrite the role of government. So he saved the largest cuts of all for what we might call nation-building departments: transportation, natural resources, industrial and regional development, the environment, agriculture and fisheries.
Then he delivered a savage, if not fatal, blow to the guiding principal of social program universality, killing the Canada Assistance Plan (CAP),
…and the long-standing (1977) Established Programs Financing, the method by which Ottawa provided targeted, accountable funding for health and post-secondary education to the provinces…”
“It was massive decentralization beyond anything Brian Mulroney had ever contemplated and greater than even Preston Manning had publicly called for.”
“…his hiring of Marcel Massé as his most important economic advisor. Taking an energy-guzzling economy focussed almost exclusively on exports to the U.S. and turning it into one based on environmental sustainability would require an enormous interventionist role for government. That is something Mr. Massé could never abide.”
“…When he [Dion] first came to Ottawa, the academic he sought out for discussion and advice was none other than Tom Flanagan, the extreme-right Calgary School guru who advised and wrote policy for Preston Manning during the most critical years of the Reform Party’s growth. Dion had spent a formative year at the Brookings Institution in the U.S…”
Why They Fight
And what it means for us.
BY PETER WEHNER
Excerpt:
It is the fate of the West, and in particular the United States, to have to deal with the combined threat of Shia and Sunni extremists. And for all the differences that exist between them–and they are significant–they share some common features.
Their brand of radicalism is theocratic, totalitarian, illiberal, expansionist, violent, and deeply anti-Semitic and anti-American. As President Bush has said, both Shia and Sunni militants want to impose their dark vision on the Middle East. And as we have seen with Shia-dominated Iran’s support of the Sunni terrorist group Hamas, they can find common ground when they confront what they believe is a common enemy.
The war against global jihadism will be long, and we will experience success and setbacks along the way. The temptation of the West will be to grow impatient and, in the face of this long struggle, to grow weary. Some will demand a quick victory and, absent that, they will want to withdraw from the battle. But this is a war from which we cannot withdraw. As we saw on September 11th, there are no safe harbors in which to hide. Our enemies have declared war on us, and their hatreds cannot be sated. We will either defeat them, or they will come after us with the unsheathed sword.
All of us would prefer years of repose to years of conflict. But history will not allow it. And so it once again rests with this remarkable republic to do what we have done in the past: our duty.
