  1. After the Dawson College shootings, Wendy Cukier and her cheerleaders on the Canadian Brainwashing Corporation were visibly licking their lips.

  2. I dunno. Sounds kinda like thinking Westerners are never going to take Islamofascism seriously until there’s another 9/11 or, in Bush/Cheney/Rice/Rumsfeld’s words, a “mushroom cloud”.
I think I’ve seen words to that effect a few times. Or more.

  3. Hey, Ted, more likely vacuous latte lefties and their spoiled brat spawn are going to need a mushroom cloud to wake up to the Islamofascist menace. What part of Iran’s nuclear message aren’t you getting? The same effete birdbrains didn’t notice Hitler’s menace until their narcissism was interrupted either. You got a link attributing that quote to Bush/Cheney/Rice/Rumsfeld?
Squeamish toward guns, Ted, what’s the problem, fearful your fellow man hasn’t got your highly developed level of self-control? Or, Ted lives in a gated community where security is provided by others with access to guns? Or, Ted, never worked at an all night convenience store in a bad neighborhood?
    Lucky, Ted.

  4. My, my, such anger Penny.
Thanks for proving my point, though, Penny. Which – because you obviously are too clueless to get it – was that thinking a tragedy is the only way to get someone to support your position (gun control in Kate’s example, heightened security in mine) is NOT the same as hoping that it does. And thinking such is clearly NOT the sole domain of the left or the right.
But I am impressed by your confidence in predicting my views on anything, as I have said nothing about them.
At least, not recently. I think I may indeed have had a bit to say elsewhere about the importance of taking radical Islam very seriously, at least once or twice:

Including the need for the Liberals’ stronger security laws (you know, the ones the cops used to arrest the wannabe terrorist kids last summer): http://canadiancerberus.blogspot.com/2005/08/new-security-laws.html
And a strong supporter of Afghanistan to boot! http://canadiancerberus.blogspot.com/2006/06/liberals-and-afghanistan.html
Sorry to burst your fine bubble of bile, penny, but I’m not here to pick a fight over gun control or some people’s scaremongering efforts to drum up support for a botched war on terror.
I’m just here to put a little hypocrisy under the microscope and I thank you as you’ve been an able specimen.

  5. Ted, the difference between the two statements is that the threat to public safety of radical Islam is real while the threat of law abiding gun ownership has been demonstrated time and time again to be a leftwing pipe dream. Increased gun ownership among law abiding individuals (eg: concealed carry laws etc) decreases violent crime.

  6. Hey, he’s right – not that I necessarily agree with him, but he is right – after all, it took September 11 for people to start taking a serious look at terrorism.
No, I’m NOT comparing gun ownership to terrorism. Nor am I saying he’s right about gun control. But in regards to the principle of terrible events stirring people to action over an issue, he’s right. People would start believing in restricting access to firearms if a crazy horrible massacre happened to their children. He’s not praying for it. He’s just saying that’s what it would take for people to turn against the American right to bear arms.
Take it as a compliment – he’s basically acknowledging he’s never going to win.

  7. Johnnyboy: you don’t get it either, eh? And I scrubbed the mirror so it would be extra shiny.
First comments here took Kate’s post to imply a progressive type’s contemplation of what might change people’s minds (i.e. a great tragedy) is the equivalent of HOPING for death and tragedy in order to advance their cause.
That is as tortured an interpretation of what Bryan Jones meant as it would be for me to say that someone contemplating that it might take another 9/11 before people wake up to the reality of fundamentalist, radical Islam is the equivalent of someone HOPING for another 9/11.
So you see, I don’t give a crap if gun control is a pipedream or if conservatives really are hoping for another Islamic terrorist attack the way you apparently are. I’m just an equal opportunity hypocrisy hunter.
Unfortunately, people like you and penny seem to see the world in such a straightjacket of left and right that it couldn’t possibly enter your mind that might be a little bit of both and a lot of neither.

  8. I wonder what it would take to get the Swiss people to give up their right to own guns. Every Swiss male is a soldier, all guns must be ready for action at all times. All Swiss soldiers keep their guns at their homes.
What country, in Europe, lost the fewest citizns in the last World War? Suffered the least damage? Hummm? No, it wasn’t France.
‘The best offense is a good defense’.
Something for you to think about in your grey world, Ted.

  9. Jema54:
What the f–k does Switzerland have to do with a bunch of twisted wankers claiming Jones wants people to die so he can get his gun control laws in?

  10. Jema54:
What the f–k does Switzerland have to do with a bunch of twisted wankers claiming Jones wants people to die so he can get his gun control laws in?

  11. Is there something in the making of a good conspiracy theory here, or at least an actual pop-psychology attribute one can make to elements of the population? Byran Jones is likely to get his wish if history is repeated.
Gun control started in Canada as a spawn of the Left “Peace Movement” or “Ban The Bomb” activist crowd back during the Cold War. The likely purpose of the Useful Idiots was to damage our Militia movement which was begun to counter similar USSR programs. I won’t go into the history or military significance of Militias except to say they are more effective in national defense than given credit for.
For some reason, there always seemed to be a shooting involving the perfect villains and victim to get the activists the news media attention in the nick of time. Perhaps this is no more than coincidence and previous to this there were no “Chicken Littlies” to get the McCarthyism going in the MSM. Still, it gives one pause for thought.

  12. Jema54:
Considering Switzerland was neutral during WW2 is it any wonder they lost the fewest, and suffered the least damage. All they did was steal money from other people hoping they would never come back for it.

  13. PO; I think that people put their money in Switzerland because they know it is safe there. That is not stealing.
We all die PO. It is how you live before you die that counts. The Swiss live a secure life because the citizens are soldiers and they know how to defend themselves. Unlike squalid dictatorships like Iran, Iraq, Cuba, the USSR etc., Switzerland is a Democracy. The Swiss people love their country and the Freedom they enjoy in their country; hence they are willing to defend themselves against enemies who would steal their country and their freedom. Do a little reading before you make sweeping generalizations.

  14. Switzerland’s national sport is shooting. And not skeet shooting, or air rifle, or anything so ‘recreational’. It is high power rifle shooting, and not your single shot bolt action target rifle either, but their kept-at-home machine guns. Their country is built to be defended, and every citizen is the army.
So why doesn’t Switzerland have the highest gun murder rate, or have daily school shootings, or parking lot shootups?

  15. “Jema54”:
“I think that people put their money in Switzerland because they know it is safe there. That is not stealing.”
Yes, but my, how convenient that many foreign depositors vanished during the Second World War.
    Jewish depositors.
I seem to recall Swiss banks took some time ‘fessing up to the legal heirs of those depositors that they were still quietly holding on to those assets as the interest continued to tick over…

  16. Maybe it’s not so depressing for those born in Canada to be here. But for an immigrant like me, who came from a country with dictatorial political regime, but pretty much no ‘bans’ and ‘prohibitions’ at other legislative levels, like provincial and municipal, it is. I love my new homeland Canada, but sometimes I scream: how on Earth is it possible, that Canadians are prohibited from so rudimental and natural, that I in my old dictatorship could have and do? To the arms, for crying out loud! Put a f__n end to the banning of this and that done by a small group of people, who don’t even know any one of us!

  17. The Swiss have remained neutral in every major conflict. Sure, they carry arms and keep them at home etc. etc., but how would they do if they actually had to use them? We haven’t been given the opportunity to find out, have we?

  18. Ted. Take a deep breath before you blow a gasket my friend.
These lefties have an ideological plan to take guns away from all citizens, not for public safety but because they do not want the responsibility of looking after themselves. How they arrive at that point does not matter to them. If it means a mass killing that would suit them fine. Then these narcissists would be able to get on TV and cry about the evils of guns etc.
Conservatives on the other hand do not want another terrorist attack. Witness the success of George Bush in preventing another attack on the USA and compare that to the failure of the Clintonistas. Conservatives are pointing out the ignorance of the left while the left hopes for tragedy to make their point.
    Hope you’re gonna be OK.

  19. I can’t seem to get onto the page to see what those leftist loonies are talking about. However, they are doing their typical hoping for some maniac to literally paint the town red with blood, so they can keep their activist groups relevant and running. Many groups that normally would have become irrelevant a long time ago keep themselves alive by inventing so-called “crises” and using tragedies to reinforce their slowly crumbling positions. These anti-gun groups initially started with all the “love” and “peace” bull#@&! of the hippie era, or with morons like Sarah Brady and Wendy Cukier pulling “Cindy Sheehans”, which in my definition is milking a personal tragedy of either yourself or others to further your cause. These groups are losing ground, so they are getting desperate.

  20. Concordia University is surrounded by police after reports of an armed gunman. This gun control idea is working really well, I see.

  21. Just had a shooting in a School parking lot before 07:00 AM. Suspected road rage the MSM says. More likely someone who deals drugs at the school. The criminal element is all running around with guns. How can this happen? I can’t buy one at the corner store.
Switzerland was able to remain neutral during WW11 because taking it would have been too costly. The same for Sweeden who maintains a similar Militia system, every male up to age 55; or at least they did up to a decade ago.

  22. Sebd, your education in history is lacking. Go look up the Swiss Guards. Find out why the Vatican uses them. Find out why Switzerland was banned from exporting mercenaries. Check up on their current militia/reservist system, and see how much they train.
Then you won’t wonder if the Swiss would have any difficulty in protecting themselves.

  23. You know I believe in Gov’t Gun Control, I really do. A good start would be; dis-arming the criminals.
    ,

  24. Disarming the criminals??!?!?
It will never happen here. Too many loopholes in our laws. Even the Privacy Laws protect them over their victims.
It all makes for very well fed pools of criminal defence and immigration lawyers too. Lots of clout from those areas defending their livelihoods.
Disarm the criminals?? What a perfectly logical, albeit in Canada highly unlikely, concept.

  25. The real answer is to ARM EVERYONE.
Remember a man with a gun is a citizen
a man with out one is a subject.

  26. “The real answer is to ARM EVERYONE.”
Including ALL the muslims living in this country, no doubt.

  27. I hate to go back to the switzerland thing, but, they have not been invaded in hundreds of years (napoleon bypassed, Germans bypassed, twice)not because of claims of neutrality, but because they had the means to back it up. Would be attackers knew it wouldn’t be worth it. Belgium, Holland, Denmark, and Norway were neutral and look where that got them. Claims of neutrality have to be backed up by the firepower to enforce it.
There was a time in this country ( roughly 1814 till 1880)when every able bodied man was a member of the militia, they would muster at least once a year and they were expected to bring their own firearms and ammunition. How much we have changed. We’ve gone from being expected to be armed to not trusted enough to be armed in a very short while. I think that says a lot about the strength of our democracy.

  28. “Gun control started in Canada as a spawn of the Left “Peace Movement” or “Ban The Bomb” activist crowd back during the Cold War”
Hand guns were controlled beginning in the 1930s.

  29. Substitute Islamics and major terrorist attacks and you get the same stupid rhetoric on the other side of the fence.

  30. Just typical of those liberal wussies to whine for more gun control when gun control dont work at all
