  1. Who would have thought that bird grinders and Chinese mirrors don’t work very well under certain atmospheric conditions such as heavy cloud cover and lack of wind?

  2. Hahahahahahah. ….. green energy hahahahaha …..

It’s never going to happen because it cannot work globally .. perhaps small limited applications may be useful, but green energy cannot power a growing modern society.

There has to be a better way … we just haven’t figured it out yet.

  3. The kicker is that they celebrated “100% remewable power” a few days ago. Unfortunately Greens are going to latch on to this as a proof that net zero is possible and that the outage was, of course, caused by climate change, so we need MOAR renewables!!! The article explains the systemic fragility of the grid so this will happen again.

  4. Initial report is suggesting there was a significant frequency drop (note that significant in this context is a mere 0.15 Hz), which I think Portugal is pinning on a temperature anomaly on a 400kV transmission line from or inside Spain, but it seems plausible that Spain’s heavy reliance on solar was at least a contributing factor since they lacked the large rotating generators on the grid to keep it synchronized.

Going to be fascinating watching this one play out.

  5. Now imagine what would happen if our entire transportation grid relied on renewable energy. Imagine what would happen if all of our vehicles were electric.

    Complete and total paralyses.

Well, guess what. That’s a feature, not a bug.

    –the REAL fc.

  6. Looking at weather data, probably not a failure of solar power (a very warm sunny day when it went down), wind field looked unusual with strong winds in south, light winds otherwise — wonder if a power surge from one wind facility tripped grid as A/C demand was rising.

  7. How smart is it to replace reliable, dispatchable baseload power with intermittent, unreliable power while also planning to run everything from heat to transportation on this intermittent electricity? It is a disaster just waiting to happen.

  8. lm no electrical engineer, but lve come to speculate/believe/surmise the ginormous total weight of the ‘flywheel’ system used in hydro and nuke generation, disallows huge and sudden surges and drops in total elec power at any moment, given that over time on average, variation in demand is spread over say one hour to the next.
not, oops!! cloud cover!!! there it goes suddenly get on it operators!!! (and then it all goes black and silent again)
maybe the conspiddddacy is the boyz in control are COUNTING ON IT

  9. It was very dark between Malaga-Motril along the A7. Our saviour was a supermarket carpark, all lit up in Motril.
A weather event (high winds) caused cancellation of rapid ferry traffic between Tangier, MA-Spain.
