  1. Very cool – thanks Kate!

Check out SmarterEveryDay Ep 273 for video of PRD’s exploding.

    1. tetris? nope, that ‘anti-tetris’ the contiguous pcs of rock represent the tetris pcs ‘fitting together’. this machine is knocking them apart.
where l come from, gravel is made from river rock aka all that stuff shoved southward via repeated glaciers and eroded smooth, then smashed into large med small into what we normally think of as gravel.

  2. Looks like aluminum press mandrels. That helps to spread the forces as the softer aluminum deforms. A hardened and tempered alloy steel might have a very different outcome. 20 tons isn’t enough to do that to steel. Been there, done that, have a hydraulic press of my own.

Still, some fascinating strength there. I wonder if the science could be used to create much stronger fiberglass? Or windows? We have tempered glass windows in our cars that will shatter if you just chip them a little.
