Planners thought it would take four days to capture the island, took six weeks.
6,800 Marines killed, 20,000+ wounded. All 20,000 Japanese killed/suicided with the exception of around 200 men.
This is why the atomic bombs were dropped.
Iwo Jima was part of it. Okinawa was probably more of an influence, it was far worse. But yeah, the Japanese had lost the war way back in 1943 (some say earlier) and their gambit was to make the war so costly that the Allies would seek terms.
I don’t think there is a more amazing image than this one of the Marines hoisting that flag onto Iwo Jima.
