  1. I just finished watching that entire Megyn Kelly episode before coming here.

She did a segment on the Toronto plane crash as well, with an FAA guy and a Navy F-18 pilot. Sure enough, Matt ‘Wiz’ Buckley (who viewed the cockpit footage) says that while he lands F-18s at a descent rate of 800 FPM (feet per minute) this aircraft was landing at *1100* FPM. No wonder the landing gear collapsed.

    1. The F-18 is a Navy aircraft (originally) that was built to be slammed on carrier decks. 800 fpm is a lot. Watch a few carrier landings to get a feel. 1100 fmp is nearly a crash. I am not sure if the gear collapsed, or if one of the wings just touched the ground as they flex a lot. The CRJ has a short landing gear and low wings, it looks like a Dachshund, so the gound clearance is pretty low. Either/or. The most retarded question was this reporter asking the F-18 dude in his pimp outfit if aircraft were equipped with instruments that told the pilot their sink rate. Groan…

Yeah, that was my very first thought when I saw the original video…way too hard a landing. I would think that the starboard landing gear probably collapsed first, then the wingtip hit.

In a previous life, I did a review of the labor standards for the FA-18 nose gear. I’ll not give any details, but let’s just say they are well designed and meticulously manufactured to take incredible forces. I doubt that the specs for any commercial craft, expected to ease down onto a nice runway on solid ground, are anywhere near as stringent.

And a nice LONG runway at that. No need to ‘dive for the deck’ there.
