    For Trump, maybe. But Iran has all the time in the world.

      Is everyone really all so sure about this? And if so, why?

      1. Oh, the US certainly has more than a few weeks left, but as per the reasons outlined by VDH, it is not likely that Trump does.

        As for Iran, the evil bastards are still there, and still in power, after murdering tens of thousands of their own citizens. And there is no country (or countries) on this planet that is willing to undertake the few possible solutions to change that.

        1. We seem to be willing to change that situation of which you spoke. However, it appears as though many people have not read or pondered much military history. This includes some of our ‘betters’. Knowledge is both enjoyable and empowering; I highly suggest that people consider pursuing it when they have some free time (I always like to read for an hour before my bed time. You don’t even have to read deep treatise, just some light reading will often do the trick!)

          As for VDH, while I do value much of his work and frequently read him, it’s always good to treat him with a critical eye and not take everything he says carte blanche, as one should do with everyone’s opinions. Like everyone else, he is influenced by things outside himself. He’s gotta dance with who brings him to the prom — just like everyone else.

          I do notice that you didn’t go into details — the ‘why’ part of my query. I’m a bit disappointed, and remember: I asked the question first. Over to you Jim.

          1. I have no idea if “everybody” is so sure about this: Trump only having a few weeks left. But I am, for the reasons VDH outlined. But, I’d be quite content if time proves me (and VDH) wrong.

            And as far as world history is concerned, Berlin, Nurnberg, Dresden, and countless other places are pretty good examples of the degree of destruction and devastation that is required to bring fanatical regimes to their knees.

            Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the other kind of solution – but even more unpalatable.

          2. gotta agree with u jane. my suspicion the Donald publicly utilizes and exhibits a lot of bluster, exageration and hyperbole.
            but behind the scenes, with his very top aides, the pinnacle of the U.S. military, his most trusted circle, they know he is a ruthless calculator. he summons his skill in weighing countless factors, comes up with contingencies every which way and plays his hand according to real world circumstances.
            its why he changes tactics and policies so quickly at times, tariffs for instance.
            its merely a variation of his business techniques that made him a billionaire.
            l truly believe, bluster and ego aside, at the very centre of his psyche is a desire to ‘fix’ America and a belief he was the one to do it.

          4. A research quest for you:
            Look up historic military strategies where the goal was capitulation of the enemy without excessive destruction/bloodshed.
            Of course, there will always be destruction and bloodshed, war is rather predicated on that reality. However, we should be looking at what the strategic planning was with the goal of avoiding those. VDH would tell you that this has been so; I don’t know why he isn’t picking up on this — could be that he fears how the population is blind to it and will vote accordingly. He may be correct in this.
            Nonetheless, the ignorance of the public (and, importantly, its susceptibility to propaganda — very important to keep in mind) cannot be a factor in war planning.

            I find it to be one of the tragedies of our time that we so quickly forgot our own histories.

          5. The very people charged with TEACHING our history … have refused. We have several generations of ignoramuses. Note: ignorant, not necessarily stupid.

      Yep. My team won it. And more importantly looked and acted classy doing it. Can’t say that about the Argies though. Too bad. I want to like their team and play … but they play thug-ball.

    They forgot the US is not a One-Party State with ZERO checks and balances like poor Canada.
    I suspect that Trump is more than fed up with the Liberal communists and that he has a plan “to win”.
    Canada better hope he doesn’t win the midterms.
    Claim the Arctic, close the border, send in the Peoria police………
    There are NO good feelings about Canada in DC anymore.
    Notice the Media slant. Bad, bad Canucks.
    Given Canada’s fondness for Liberal communists, the focus on Canada is changing some American misconceptions. Not in a good way.
    The “world’s longest undefended border” is now a communist liability. Oh goodie.
    And given Canada’s usual Keystone Cops political performance, anything is possible.

    Economy tanking with Canada predicted to fall to the bottom of all developed countries. The Libs have been so successful at tanking the economy that Cdn’s now have the highest debt of G7 countries.
    As of 2025, Canadian households face significant debt challenges, with household debt surpassing 107% of the country’s GDP and an average non-mortgage debt of approximately $21,931 per individual.
    According to the CBC – Canadian households are more in debt than those in any other G7 country, and the amount they owe is now more than the value of the country’s entire economy.

    Debt – this lib gov’n has doubled the debt (adding over $600b already with over $200b more planned). In fact they’ve added more debt than ALL PREVIOUS GOV’N COMBINED. Pair that with the terrible state of the economy and its clear to see just how much of a threat this lib gov’n is.

    Crime way up – Canada recorded 591,856 violent crimes in 2024, representing 23.4% of all police-reported Criminal Code violations and demonstrating that violent offenses constitute nearly one-quarter of total criminal activity affecting Canadian communities. The Violent CSI decrease of 1% marked improvement from the 15% cumulative increase recorded from 2021 to 2023, though rates remain substantially elevated compared to the historic low achieved in 2014. Compared to 2023 there were some improvements in specific areas but despite these improvements, violent crime rates remain 43.8% higher than 2014 levels.

    Carney said judge him by food prices – Canada has highest food inflation of G7, with more than 2M needs to use food banks monthly.

    Not to mention unsustainable immigration, unaffordable housing, bloated gov’n, businesses & investments being driven out of the country by the billions (if not trillions).
