  1. All right, here’s my throw: the Americans, having found Napoleon a convivial fellow, chose to assume that the Canadians, French and English, would either welcome an American invasion, or at least be unable to resist it without substantial British assistance beyond the British capacity to spare in Europe. They assumed Canada could not defend itself and attempted to walk in. And were proven wrong.

How did I do? I’m not usually so positive towards the Canadians but hell, it’s Saturday night with the hockey on.

    1. Americans couldn’t believe a society of healthy people would choose Serfdom over Freedom.

They were right, no healthy society would.
      Then or now.

      1. Well, that’s the thing. Canadians already had an American-style society of landowning farmers, and not serfs. They didn’t see the system they were under as in any way inferior to the American, and if anything this was one of those periods in history where Canada seemed to be outperforming the US. Indeed, the conduct of the war suggested that the Americans were much less effective and dramatically less sensible than the British.

The War of 1812 reflects badly on the health of American society at the time, not Canadian. I don’t think it offers any insight into the current state of things, which strikes me as utterly different. I certainly don’t think it proves inherent Canadian virtue or wickedness.

  2. Here’s an interesting 14-minute video explaining Spain’s ups and downs starting in the Franco era:

However, when he talks about Spain’s liberal immigration policy, not mentioned is the ever-growing crime rate, both petty and serious, the increase in gang warfare and money-laundering operations and drug dealing.

  3. When I was earning my undergraduate degree in American History, one of the courses’ required reading was “The Invasion of Canada.” The title summed up the book. Similarly, when I moved to North Carolina from New York I was introduced to the term “The War of Northern Aggression.”

  4. War of 1812? The UK agreed to American terms before Americans declared war but when the Americans found out they didn’t back down. One of the few American victories, the Battle of New Orleans, was fought two weeks after the peace treaty. A lot of bad timing.
