  2. Ever wonder what happened to 7 lp’s and 5 years of Fleetwood Mac? “The missing middle years of Fleetwood Mac”. So Amazon Prime is serving me up a menu of movies … it … thought I might like and up pops “The Story of Fleetwood Mac”. OK … that looks interesting so I give it a look. The “storyteller” had some great early concert footage of the Peter Green FM and, of course, hammered home how Green WAS FM and a great blues guitarist … OK, fine. The narrator briefly mentions Danny Kirwin … and even shows Kirwin playing the blues licks live that they are crediting to Green! Uh dude … that’s Kirwin playing those lead blues chops. Gawd. Oh Well … ha! Yeah that was Kirwin laying down the lead for Oh Well too.

    And then … from Peter Green’s departure … the narrator jumps from 1969 to 1975 and the Lindsay Buckingham era. Wait. What!? They literally skipped over 7 lp’s and about 5 years of FM. Nada. Nothing. Not so much as a mention. In a Documentary titled The Story of Fleetwood Mac Are they bloody serious? Bob Welch’s name wasn’t even uttered. Wow.

    So they pretended some very solid, if not radio-friendly for the times (7 and 8 minute long songs) simply didn’t exist and had no influence over the evolution of the band. I sat there open-mouthed watching them butcher the rib cage out of FM. Unreal. This was half a Documentary.

    So here’s a sampling of Future Games starting with my favorite Sands of Time cut written and performed by Danny Kirwin. I can still envision the Freshman HS house party with this lp as the soundtrack for making-out … yeah it was superb in that capacity.

    And the cut Future Games with a video of 1970 Haight Asbury. A perfect match for the music which is like an ethereal soundtrack to the Summer(s) of Love on the GG Park pan handle. Everyone loves to bag on Bob Welch … but when he was paired with Danny Kirwin they wrote some fabulous music. Experimental music. Music that a former Brit Blues band were trying to evolve into something newer, fresher, and more relevant. A bit of psychedelic blues if you will … which is why I love this FM lp as much as all their later lp’s. And an uplifting message that says your future is what you make of it.

    Thank you for indulging my Documentary review. I give it 1-star, and suggest you spend your time elsewhere with better-made Documentaries. And sample the lp Future Games. Play it through twice … and you’ll be hooked.

      I love all things FW (especially my first celebrity crush Stevie Nicks – sigh) so I too took the bait from Amazon and watched this abomination of a (sort of) documentary. I had the same reaction Kenji! Amazon serves up a lot of garbage and this is right there at the bottom of the bin!

    Legend has it that back around 1910, AT&T did a study which concluded that every adult human female (a.k.a. woman) would be needed to run the switchboards in the US. The Strowger story (inventor of the stepping switch) is probably true. “Necessity is the mother of invention.”

    1. AGT (now Telus) said it went automatic earlier than most. Lonely bachelors were scooping up operators faster than AGT could replace them.

  28. Very much back in the day, got the word that my uncle had died of a heart attack. Mum and Dad were travelling down the Oregon Coast on a holiday, and I had only a sketchy itinerary. Did contact the police down there and ask them to flag down any Old Cutlasses they saw with BC licence plates and get them to phone. No response. In desperation, I went down to our city’s main library and photocopied pages from books they had showing hotels/motels in that area. Then I went home, dialed up “0”, and got a fantastic AGT operator. Explained the problem, and she and I went through the listings I had for the hostelries along their route. It took quite a few tries, but she found the motel where my parents were booked in. Was put through to their room; Dad answered and told him to sit down before giving him the sad news that his younger brother had died and the funeral was the next day.
    Parents packed up immediately, pad for the room they were not going to use, and headed north to the Olympic Peninsula. Next morning, took the first ferry out to Victoria and landed in time to get to uncle’s house to be part of the family at uncle’s funeral.
    I will forever be grateful to the AGT operator who understood the urgency of the situation and was determined, if at all possible, to find my parents.
