Ontario Is For The Birds

Where would society be without the Chimney Swift and the derelict industrial chimneys that they call home? How dare those evil contractors disturb a nesting site!!

Marble Arch and Adam Watson significantly damaged the chimney’s function as a habitat for the Chimney Swift by carrying out demolition work during the birds’ migratory season, and by leaving a large hole in the side of the chimney for the remainder of the 2020 season.

  1. Beyond Orwellian: “Chimney Swifts are known to rely on vertical structures, particularly large brick chimneys, for communal roosting and nesting. Large chimneys are particularly suitable for communal roosting, however these structures are increasingly rare. As a result, existing roosting locations used by Chimney Swifts are critical habitat for the species.”

  2. Too bad they weren’t erecting a wind turbine. As long as you’re on the right side of the killing.

  3. Large chimneys dominated the serene skyline a mere 6 centuries ago. Then came the white (contemptuous spit) men (contemptuous spit).

          1. Pssst … it’s an industrial use … by a hospital. It’s not a “life-saving” smokestack no matter how narrowly you view how hospitals work.

          2. It’s a hospital use by a hospital and a hospital is not an industry, but go ahead and try to justify your ignorance. I await your next pearl of wisdom.

BTW, it is life-saving because the plant provides heat for the rooms, hot water for the taps and super heated water for sterilizing medical instruments.

  4. L – Bats come with a risk of rabies, a potentially fatal disease. A homeowner of an older house in rural Saskatchewan discovered that there were bats in the attic. Hiring a pest control company to eliminate the problem was illegal, she was told; because the bats are listed as a species of concern, under the Federal Endangered Species Act. Then the bats spread to the walls. The homeowner defaulted on the mortgage and moved out. I don’t know if the then derelict house has been destroyed or doing so will be illegal as long as bats live there.

The elevating of bats above that of human beings(formerly sacred individuals, made in the image of God) is another example of the reemergence of Paganism and nature worship. It replacing Judeo-Christian morality. Another reason in a long and growing list for Independence.

  5. Curiosity made me check:

Before European settlement brought chimneys to North America, Chimney Swifts nested in caves, cliff faces, and hollow trees.

Environmental/bird organizations build ‘nesting towers’ for them. Cool little bird.
