If Carney’s defense “plan” doesn’t fit the definition of a slush fund designed to line the pockets of Liberal cronies, I don’t know what would.
Carney’s strategy in making sure this actually gets done is a familiar one: create a new agency (in this case, the Defense Investment Agency) headed by a suit (investment banker Doug Guzman) whose job it will be to streamline processes and deliver results. That’s in addition to the existing entities charged with the work of defense (the Department of National Defense), subsidizing defense (the Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development) and purchasing the tools necessary for defense (Public Services and Procurement Canada).

More bureaucracy to streamline the existing bureaucracy.
It’s idiots all the way down.
$470 billion, with “A rough third of this says the Prime Minister’s office, will support ‘defence procurement opportunities’ “
So $157 billion, not to buy anything, but to support opportunities!
Rich pickings for Liberals, their families, and friends. Remember all the Liberals who formed ‘medical supply’ companies during COVID?
I hear the Somali community in Minnesota is already figuring out how they can cash in. Much to the consternation of Quebec who figure the money is theirs.
The government’s number one focus above everything else combined, is its existence.
There is only one measure that Liberal (and leftist) governments in general use and that is how much money they spend…..they NEVER measure meaningful results of that spending. NEVER.
There is this dilemma.
The concept or at least the name of the “Defense Investment Agency” is good. For this country has the technology, the brain power capacity and trained work force, though it is degenerating with the DEI, to develop trains, planes and automobiles of its own making as it should.
Of course, with the idiots that run the government from politicians to the bureaucrats, to the patently fascist confab of the government and the established insiders of the industry, the most that will happen is that the government will propagandize the billions and billions, as Sagan would say, that they pretend to spend.
In consequence to that, the money will disappear into the established insider industry without any final product worth of anything.
The established, insider, military industrial complex will complain of not enough of investments and the idiot politicians will agree. It will be a circular construct with no good results.
Enough of prophesizing.
The idiot politicians would do better to scrap much of the bullshit that the Department of National Defense is doing and make the Defense Investment Agency development number one.
There is a good to very good chance if there are some fruits from the development, it can be exported in real sense around the world, creating new companies, making good money and producing actual value creating jobs.
Of course, this whole should be conducted be free enterprise on request and money from the government.
The better way would be if industrious engineers created new companies aimed at that kind of production and show what they are capable of.
Heh … one can dream.
Great opportunities for GC Strategies and the Keilburgers.
In passing, it continues to amuse that the Liberals are “Building Canada Strong” by stealing, er appropriating, the formerly All-American expression Boston Strong adopted and popularized after the Boston Marathon bombing.
It’s also been used by other American cities, usually in an affirmative response to some natural or man-caused disaster. One can then assume that Building Canada Strong is a response to the disaster of the Trudeau Government.
It’s more on the lines of Brandon’s “Build Back Better” scam.
Generally the memory remembers the good/pleasant things that happened in the past.
For me not so to liberals and the military.
How about integration and the seven-up salesman uniform.
How about the cancellation of helicopters because it was a conservative contract. At least 17 airmen died because if this.
How about the submarines that aren’t seaworthy.
I could go on but that’s enough of the good memories.
I can appreciate the mud encrusted peasants having a cynical view of this wise policy wrought by their betters. I know how they feel. I have felt the same way. What I have found, however, it is good financial sense to look for opportunities while others are caught up in complaining.
Personally, I look forward to renewed interest by Canada’s War Machine in the Reusable Anti-Tank technologies (acronym: RAT). I personally know several vanguard, visionary start up enterprises doing advanced development in RAT. Time to get out your wallet, check book, or credit card and invest wisely. Your friends are doing it, why aren’t you? Free RAT tip: Anti-Tank Glue.
You can thank me later.
I see an opportunity. I can infiltrate your RAT movement and betray its secrets for money! I always wanted to be a RAT fink…
My concern is once again, little bang for the buck. The Brits are selling their Type 26 frigate for $2B a copy (Norway?). We are paying $25B for 3 frigates.
Oh we will just design as we build it… No, technically wrong answer.
Fire everyone involved in this fiasco, civilian, military and contractor and get in the line-up for the Brit’s frigates.
“Carney’s strategy … is [to] create a new agency … to streamline processes and deliver results.”
As Stan says “it’s idiots all the way down” until we reach the turtles.
You cannot create a new level of government to make an old level of government more efficient. Even Monty Python knew this. You have to cut back the regulations and get rid of employees. Cut the department back to one person and give them a stamp that says “Approved”. Have a law that they can only hire one person per year. It will buy us some time.
Sounds just like the Green Slush fund and the funding for their global world green bank projects that to this day we have no idea where the money went? Liberals lurching day after day and doing absolutely nothing to bring our economic future back in line with a productive society. At this rate we’ll be Cuba in two years.
I’m going to start a frozen novelties business in the Maritimes and call it, “Fundy Slush”.
Pay your vig.
That’s Domenic’s territory.
Carney will only visit the Maritime colonies if there is an election. Sadly that will be enough.
25% French plus the drunken Irish gets 4 Liberal seats out of 10 in NB.
6 if the Con leader is particularly off. And when aren’t they?
Another 22 Liberal seats for the shameless GimmeDats of NS,NFLD and PEI.
And never will you hear a discouraging word from the All Liberal Alla The Time Media.
Never.
CBC, CTV, Global and Postmedia’s Maritime posing as Conservatives print monolith and good luck finding a cogent, rational adverse source anywhere, anytime.
Like most of Canada, widely sourced, widely available Conservative viewpoint is as real and as rare as a Liberal balanced budget.
“…to streamline processes and deliver results.” Translation: More political interference in the procurement process.
Yes, the “results” they’re looking to streamline is the maximum transfer from the taxpayer to the [can’t really say, can we?] with the minimum of foolishness regarding actual weapons being built.
And I must say, good freaking luck to anyone who contracts with these schmucks to actually make something. “Oh, you were going to -make- cannon barrels? How 20th Century dear boy.”
The goal is to classify enough spending as “defence” so we get to the NATO target
Nobody in the liberal government is claiming they will increase our military capability
Just so they can say target achieved without looking like they lied.
Sounds like Carney has been talking to Chretien.
Let me guess, this new agency will report directly to the PMO.
As an aside
If I was as gullible as a liberal I would have to believe that the problem with our military capability was that we didn’t have enough bureaucracy to handle procurement.
Birthing bureaucracy is THE liberal core competence.
New header- more cronies than brains.
