I feel rather cheated; I’m the result of multiple romantic encounters between tribes and ‘colonizers’; I probably look the part better than some of them; a check or two would come in handy. I can speak French although rusty (although not the Quebecois patois; Cajun I might be able to pull off with some practice — that probably doesn’t count).
            No Scottish last name though; maybe that’s the problem.

               I worked with a REAL Cajun for a few years … last name Bossier. From BaToooon Rougggge. He could turn it on when wanted … but was getting his accent Californicated out of him. I literally ADORE the Cajun subculture … the kind of DIVERSITY that should be celebrated.

Why does the government that pretends to represent taxpayers fund an organization pretending to represent and govern people whose ancestors are defined by the nature of having “some” indigenous DNA. IOW why do we tolerate chemically deterministic “rights and entitlements”. These questions apply to the less diluted indigenous DNA cohort as well.

   1. And why do these Metis “nations” emphasize their Indigenous DNA over their European DNA?
      Both are in the mix, but only one seems to matter to them, or to the gov’t. Frankly, the Europeans were here before the Metis.
      If we really want integration, just forget all these barriers that the gov’t has constructed, and that these groups are addicted to. Forget it all. In 3 generations, nobody will know or particularly care. In the early 20th century in rural Sask, it mattered a LOT if you were Swedish, Ukrainian, Scot, or whatever. Those groups had their own villages, and rarely mixed. But the gov’t was not involved. So in a few decades people had intermarried, worked together, and finally just got along.
      BTW….I have my Metis card. Never chose to take any benefits or special treatment.

    1. It is supposed to be the offspring of a French man (a fur trapper/trader from the Northwest Company) and an Algonquin/Cree woman. As well it covers subsequent generations.
       But the revisionists now say Jerry Pots – having a Scott father and Piegan (Pi’ikani’i Blackfoot) mother – and his descendants are also somehow Metis.

    2. There are two kinds of Metis. Descendants of those who rode with Riel in 1870 or 1885 considering themselves Metis despite being overwhelmingly white by 2026. The federal government, Himmler Racial Classification Branch, considers someone less than 1/4 Indian but more than some fraction to be Metis. I know status Indians you wouldn’t guess were Indians including one eventual chief I went to school with. She was 1/4 Indian but her grandfather looked mixed race. With most Metis I know, your first guess on racial origin, wouldn’t be Metis. Some have blond hair. Racial politics is all a scam. I have a cousin’s kid who has played Metis status for all it’s worth to get a PhD and a professorship. Her Metis grandfather looks white like me.
