Manitoba is now collecting above $5 Billion from welfare in a $25 Billion budget and in the same range of dependency as 3 of the Atlantic provinces at 20% of gov’t revenue coming from intergenerational interprovincial welfare payments.
I think there may be some adjustments to this file late in 2026 after the Alberta Separation Referendum.
Perhaps they’ll plant “Victory Gardens” so they don’t starve to death in the cold winters to come…

The subsidy to Ontario works out to about $25 a person. I think it’s there so that everyone else doesn’t look as bad. Seeing as Ontario is supposed to be the median, they shouldn’t be getting anything.

One of the economic groups should do a measure of per capita government employees, and show how much employees per thousand residents is paid for because of equalization.

The PQ are polling at near to 2x the provincial #Libranos in Quebec, the trend is PQ rising and #Libranos falling. The PQ have said they’ll call for a separation referendum to be held within 2 years of them forming gov’t, though that poll is currently near to 65% against and only 35% for separation. Still it’s for the federal gov’t to worry about, not me.
2 recent resignations from the Quebec #Libranos, a funding scandal… it’s looking like they’re an extension of their federal cohorts.
I’m not going to speculate on which parties will then form the federal gov’t in what’s left of Canada, a lot can/will change in the next 2 years,

A referendum will be a difficult and messy proposition. Worthwhile things often are.
I, being essentially a lazy person, would prefer the heavy lifting to be done by Les Pure Laine. My fervent hope is that they would declare independence first. This would change the entire complexion of this benighted Dominion into one that actually might be worth saving.
It is no surprise that the PQ is recently surging as the liarberals are doing what liarberals do. This time with by the extremely unctuous Pablo Rodriguez.
The next year will be very interesting. A couple predictions:

If you live in Alberta or Saskatchewan the equalization program is indistinguishable from an exploitation scheme. The formula the federal government wrote to calculate equalization is set up to benefit politically important provinces at the expense of provinces like Alberta and Saskatchewan. Then the same federal government and freeloading provinces that feed off of equalization relentlessly attack Alberta’s and Saskatchewan’s economy while mocking and threatening us for complaining about the unfairness of the situation. The equalization programs is now functioning as an extortion racket, much like everything in Canada.

Decades of equalization has done nothing to improve the GDP per capita of have-not provinces. If anything, it’s created such perverse incentives that almost every Canadian province is now a have-not province with zero need to get their economy in order. The NDP sabatoging Is BC’s economy, so pretty soon there will be only two have provinces with a population of 6 million as have provinces & 8 provinces with 34 million people in have- not status receiving equalization payments. Manitoba has become an open embarrassment among the western provinces. The $5 billion payout is a huge jump from what it used to be. Every once in a while some dope spouts off about how Manitoba could be a hydroelectric superpower. But you would need a utility that is not functionally insolvent for that to happen. Most Manitoba voters are okay with all of that unfortunately.
A full 15% of Manitoba’s provincial budget comes from Equalization. PLUS, on the transfers other than equalization the per capita federal transfer to Manitoba is almost TRIPLE what it is for Alberta.
Why did Manitoba become an economic shithole? It used to be the wealthiest province in the west. Winnipeg was the financial capital and the province is rich in resources. I suspect that having soul crushing NDP in power so much and when not in power having Conservatives govern like Karl Marx has killed ambition. And that’s just equalization. If you look at the other federal transfers to provinces you will find that BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan all get the lowest per capita amount. Quebec gets double and Manitoba and the Atlantic provinces (excluding Newfoundland) get triple. Canada is a money laundering scam.

The irony is Canada is a Climate Change country trying to divest itself of fossil fuel. Meanwhile the have-not provinces are living off Alberta, the fossil fuel province. Imagine when we finally get rid of oil & gas and Quebec has to subsidize Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, British Columbia and all of Atlantic Canada.
