  1. At some stores the supervision at these self checkouts is so incompetent that if it starts flashing orange or whatever and says wait for assistance you can just switch to another one, pay and leave all before the supervisor even notices. Sometimes I curse being honest.

  2. One day maybe 5 years ago I wanted one item and I think Walmart was testing how many people could be forced to self check. I was told all the cash registers were closed whereupon I handed the item to the clerk intending to leave. The clerk then did all the work to self check. Every other times there have been open registers.

The reason I refuse to self check is endless people in the US who have missed checking an item have been charged with theft a week later. They have the video and your banking info and the crooked cops do the rest.

  3. I used to avoid self checkouts because I thought these took jobs away from the most unskilled people in society, the low skill starting jobs that a needed second salary provides, just to increase profits for the chain. I grew up up poor. Let’s just say the demographics of the checkout person changed over the years, as the other staff in the establishments. The price rung up didn’t match the price advertised, sometimes it was double-scanned, etc. Scanned by scammer scamming me and the government. Now I don’t give a crap.

  4. “Food prices have risen more than 25% over the past five years.” yeah, I wish it was that low, the prices are up almost every time I visit the store!

I prefer to interact with a person, most of the time.. one of my first jobs, as a yoot, was in a grocery store. If you are a regular, you get to interact with the same people, if you shop at the same stores. One cashier always asks how my parent is doing, another, a nice Ukrainian lady, I always look out for her at the till and I will wait in line to see her. Another manager lady, I always try and frequent, we have a few things and common and talk about it at the tills… There are some demographics I have nothing in common with and will avoid if possible. The one lady always gets my bill wrong and sometimes charges me for more items than I buy, or messes it up entirely, I have gotten more than I paid for, once, the other times, I’m checking my bill at the register and complaining!

Some days, there are no white faces in the entire store!

  5. Safeway is so shitty that I have to bag my own groceries too … unless I want to take 15-20min. just to check out.

  6. “self-checkouts appear to be driving up theft, both accidental and intentional”

I walked out of a supermarket earlier this year and noticed when I got to my car that I neglected to scan something. I turned to go back into to the store to pay for it, but then remembered how they dogged me a couple weeks earlier with a coupon that had in tiny print that I needed to purchase $25 worth of various items for the coupon to take affect. I promptly got in my car and departed, stating to myself that we were now even.

  7. Self check outs are like public roads, good until the stupids get ahead of you. As today at wall’smart, the cow was waiting for a open check out at the self serve. There were 2, so I walked around her and took one, bitch started to complain, till I pointed to the other one not in use.

    1. You spoiled a Karen’s entertainment? I don’t know whether to say “shame on you!” or offer a trophy for (edit, better word) participating. (/sarc)

  8. In a high trust society self-checkout can work.

In a multi-cultural society it is foolish.

Dealing with taqiyya sycophants it is suicidal (for the business).

      1. Grassy ass.

        What, I don’t speak interloper?
(That’s shorthand for the missus state after a romantic picnic.)

  9. I use self checkout where it works, like Costco.
If you have a few items a clerk will scan your cart while in line, then all you do is scan your card and pay.
    Perfect.
