I wouldn’t sign that either regardless of my position on antisemitism. First of all, there’s nothing simple about the letter. It is a lobbyist formatted letter. Do I think that Jews are being targeted by individuals on high level in Canada? I sure do. BUT, I don’t support the concept of “hate crimes.” In fact, I DO support anyone’s right to hate anything and anybody they want to. I DON’T support that person breaking already established laws such as assault, murder, battery, harassment etc. And, while I don’t support applying the law to limit someone’s opinion, I fully support the societal repercussions that are attached to those positions. Ask the Dixie Chicks how that works.
For example, if I say I hate Nigerians and call Nigerians names (derogatory or otherwise), that shouldn’t be even close to being considered a crime. However, the societal repercussions might be losing friends, losing my job, or developing a reputation of determining someone’s value based on their origin or skin color.
So, when someone gets upset because politicians won’t sign onto their lobbyist/opinion formatted letter regardless of the topic, I don’t really care.
