August 25, 2025: Reader Tips

One of the under-the-radar musical talents in America is Alison Krauss. Here she is in a recent interview.

Bonus: Here’s why I love Italian women. Okay, it’s a comedy sketch, but isn’t altogether made up. You can watch all of Jessica Marchi’s videos here.

  1. Blackouts Continue to Test Cubans

“Most parts of the country are without electricity for an average of 15 hours a day, ”

“The crisis has sparked several large protests in the interior of the country, though none in Havana have yet been truly massive.”

“However, last Tuesday saw a fairly significant revolt in Centro Habana, one of the city’s most densely populated municipalities.”

As usual, the protest ended with the arrival of police officers and two water trucks – known as pipas – to distribute water. Once again, it became clear that rebellion is the only thing that makes the authorities react to prevent bigger problems.”

“Thus, the resilience of the Cuban people is tested daily, suffocated by their harsh reality yet fearful of the regime’s fierce repression of any hint of a popular uprising, knowing that such an uprising is the only thing that could remove it from power.”

    1. Jerry Douglas is the best dobro/resonator player on Earth. Dan Tymynski is a great flatpicker and singer (he did the vocals for the Clooney character in O Brother Where Art Thou).
Allison’s band is excellent. And she is dang pretty and talented.
Check out the various bands that Jerry has put together over the years.

    1. What should really bake your noodle is that it is MUCH HARDER to obtain a CA license to “do nails” as a manicurist than it is to get a commercial drivers license.

To obtain a nail technician license in California, you must complete a state-approved manicurist program consisting of at least 400 hours of training, pass written and practical exams, and pay a fee of $110. The license is valid for two years and may require continuing education for renewal.

    2. Evidently … California considers hairstyling a much more dangerous profession than driving an 18 wheeler on our crowded highways.

To legally perform hairstyling in California, you need to obtain a hairstylist license, which requires completing a state-approved 600-hour training program and passing a written exam. Alternatively, you can pursue a cosmetology license, which covers a broader range of beauty services and requires 1,000 hours of training.

      1. You only need 200 hours to become a helicopter pilot. But 600 hours to cut hair?

  2. Trump fires fed Governor Lisa Cook re mortgage fraud allegations.

Apparently she filed paperwork claiming a house in Michigan was her primary residence. Two weeks later she filed that her house in Georgia was her primary residence.

I’m betting a Democrat judge will order her reinstated, saying there’s nothing wrong with having multiple primary residences. Something to do with the definition of ‘is’.
