  2. I’m one of those weird Pink Floyd fans who actually ADORES the Animals lp. Perhaps it’s because my long deceased only brother and I shared a love of it … or it’s acerbic message resonates with my radical self (even though PIGS takes quite a swipe at Margaret Thatcher and Reagan) . But aside from Dark Side of the Moon … it’s my favorite Pink Floyd music.

    And yeah … David Gilmour’s unique talent is for the pace of his solos … always emotional … sometimes slow moving and deliberate … but so fully dripping of emotion … they just draw you in. Yeah, he’s one of those “notes in between” soloists who make the pauses as good as the notes.

    The second part of the Dogs solo (starting at 1:50) is just so amazing … and the outro is like nothing you’ve ever heard.

  3. I suspect Animals doesn’t get as much respect it deserves because it’s more of a concept album with long narrative themed songs that never got cut up into pop radio hits (have a cigar, boy). No mind. Those who know rock music recognize it for the masterpiece it is. It’s even overlooked by most “Pink Floyd Fan” pages who rank the lp low on their lists. Too bad, but who cares.

    1. I wouldn’t describe Wish Your Were Here as a pop radio hit. I think it is PF’s best album and one of the few albums you can listen from start to finish without listening fatigue. But Animals is also excellent. My favorite is their epic 17 minute “Dogs” song, written by Gilmour (e.g. have a good time … while you’re dragged down … by the stone”).

      Here is an interesting video on the early Fleetwood Mac including Peter Green who was brilliant and probably more along your listening taste (compared to the later FM).

      1. My Fleetwood Mac relationship started in the 1970’s … but extended through all iterations. Who cannot like the “pop” version of FM? I am a massive Lindsay Buckingham fan, and every member of the band should get on their knees and bless the soul of Sound City’s Keith Olsen for hooking up Nicks, Buckingham and FM. My favorite all time FM lp? Hands down … it’s Tusk. Yep, I’m just out of touch with pop music fans. But the lp is experimental, and full of emotion missing from most of FM and Rumors.

        My next Favorite FM lp? Future Games. Ironically, my least favorite FM guitarist is Bob Welch, who was a significant contributor to Future Games. However! I’m mainly not a fan of his later work with FM. On Future Games, the influence of Danny Kirwin … with his extended ethereal guitar runs of the spacey, psychedelic era are forward – beautifully complemented by new band member Christine Perfect/McVie.

        I like Peter Green, but believe he was made BETTER with the partnership of Danny Kirwin who brought a more melodic sensibility to the straight up Brit blues. Kirwin brought a fresher psychedelic, sensibility to their guitar work. And even though Green gets all the accolades … watch and hear how Kirwin essentially carries the iconic “Oh Well”. Kirwin is the “invisible” FM guitarist who shaped my favorite hippie-era FM.

        1. This comment perfectly summarizes my FAVORITE tune from Future Games … posted on the Steve Hoffman Forums on the 50th Anniversary of Future Games in 2021.

          “Sands of Time”
          A masterpiece. The way this song is put together is sheer genius. Melodies and rhythms from one part pop up in another with varying degrees of subtlety. You have the beautiful and relaxing A section with two lilting riffs, the moody and uptempo/double time B section with a dark hypnotic riff, and the dark and expressive transition section that connects them and ends the song. The lyrics are evocative. And I love how the B section returns to the A section with the reveal the intro riff was in the B section’s chorus all along.

          I agree … a tragically overlooked masterpiece by Danny Kirwin. Genius. Future Games is still in heavy rotation at my home … it gives my old soul unfettered joy.
