If It Wasn’t For Government…

Vancouver Sun- Vancouver parents blocked from teaching their kids to swim in public pools

The board explained that anyone offering formal swim instruction at a public pool must meet liability standards, including holding a municipal business licence and insurance that meets park board requirements. “These standards help ensure that all instruction is delivered safely, consistently, and in alignment with facility guidelines.”

But wait there’s more…

“Parents and guardians are not allowed to teach their own children or youth,” a city spokesperson told Postmedia. “Private lessons are offered by the city only, and we do not allow any other entity or certified instructors to teach at our pool.”

  1. Wait… Teaching your kids how to swim is considered “formal swim instruction”? I bet the unions had something to do w/ this, too…

    1. ” However, if the interaction resembles a professional lesson, a lifeguard may check in to ensure it aligns with our facility policies,” a spokesperson from the district said in a statement.

Yeah … “resembles” to some zit-faced lifeguard with a legal degree? Commie Puhleeze! BTW … I commend the parents proactively teaching their children to swim. That benefits ALL of society.

      1. That makes it sound like they’re not going to hassle parents teaching their own kids.

Probably meant to prevent Sandeep from bringing 15 kids from the shady Craigslist daycare/swim academy.

  2. “Parents and guardians are not allowed to teach their own children or youth [how to swim]”.

    How about …

Parents can’t teach their kids how to drive. Only qualified instructors can.
Parents can’t babysit their kids. Same reason.
    Parents can’t have children. Obviously.

  3. L – “Government of the people, for the people and by the people?” needs to be added via an amendment to each province’s jurisdiction. Yes, that is part of the Constitution. Until then the cabal that have seized chokepoints of administrative power will rule this nation as a Bureaucracy!

  4. Top level bureaucrats in every city, province and at the federal government level hate your fcking guts and have zero respect for your existence outside of you paying your taxes or else.
    Prove me wrong.

    1. Exactly. Ignore this stupidity. If they are so stupid as to file charges against a parent for teaching their kids how to swim, they’re going to get their posteriors handed to them. And, judging by the wording in this pronouncement, they know it. They say: “formal swim instruction.” This implies that, maybe, someone decided to set up a swimming class formally (maybe even charging). If the Vancouver Public pool offers swimming courses, I could see where this would be a problem.

  5. knowing how to bloody swim can SAVE YOUR LIFE.
l damn near drown 3 times until l got some tips from a lifeguard.
soooooooo unionboy will risk a person drowning to protect their turf?
well parents, RENT THE F’ING POOL AS A GROUP and carry on

  6. There’s always another way to skin a cat, take this lady in Airdrie, for instance, she started her own swim school and turned the closed Swiss Chalet restaurant into a pool, at great expense, now her schools are all over the province!

  7. Almost every bizarre government rules and regulations in Canada can be explained by 2 reasons – greed and resentment. In this case, the public pools (aka taxpayer and customer funded) are greedy and want parents to pay for swim lessons. Since Vancouver is uber progressive, resentment may also be a factor. As in, not every child has the privilege of having a parent with the ability to teach them basic swim lesson so no parent should be allowed to teach their child to swim safely.

Greed and resentment : the (im)moral code of Canadian authorities and too many of its citizens. Once you know this, you see it in everything from Canada’s business and marketing cartels, universal healthcare, public education, to the way Alberta and Saskatchewan are treated by the rest of Canada, etc.

  8. When your child drowns swimming somewhere else can you sue the government?
If they want the responsibility then give them all of it.

  9. Such abusive policies result from the mistaken belief that only the officially approved coaching can ensure safety. I’ve seen the same thing in curling where teaching juniors is close to being banned unless you have official certification. The under-lying assumption is that the nanny state knows better than you.

  10. While we are the most over-governed and over-regulated country I know of, I think the insurance companies are getting an easy pass here. My guess is lots of this government overreach is spurred on by insurance regulations. For another example, have you noticed how many stupid traffic control companies have popped up in the last 5 years? If you want to fart near a road, you need to hire a traffic control company to flag people in the right direction (upwind). I am positive this is brought on by insurance. The other day, I drove down a road near my house. 1 KM of cones in the middle of the road, a bunch of flaggers sitting in their trucks scrolling their phones and smoking/vaping, not a single work vehicle anywhere to be found on the road and the tax payers are paying for this garbage. I swear there are now 100 traffic control companies in my area and I don’t remember one prior to Covid.

I live near this “Langley City” pool they mention. My kids did their swimming lessons there and both ended up getting life guard and swim instructor designations. Guess what they did in the summer? Taught private swimming lessons in our back yard swimming pool. They could have both been busy 24/7 all summer long.

Because the kid is black and the mom is white, I bet they figured this was a paid lesson or something silly.

  11. “YeahPrivate lessons are offered by the city only, and we do not allow any other entity or certified instructors to teach at our pool.”

Yes, of course. YOUR pool, right? Despite the fact that WE pay for it?

These people are clearly idiots. As JoeyB and Orson say above, just ignore them.
