Reno may have been drunk as a skunk but was he really a coward? He retreated from battle when he was about to be overwhelmed and he refused to let Benteen relieve Custer thus saving almost everyone’s life. If they split the regiment again it is likely everyone would have died.
The hill Custer died on is an exposed hill with no place to hide. Custer didn’t even have the top of the hill as there are markers on top of places where Indians died. Most of the markers recording the deaths of the cavalry are on the side of the hill facing the Little Bighorn exposed to the rifles of an overwhelming number of Indian rifles.
Don’t know about you folks, but sometimes it’s hard to not cheer for the Indians.
