Massive cost overruns on yet another defense procurement contract? If Canada ever found itself in a war, it would likely be over before we got the first plane in the air.
The estimated cost of Canada’s incoming fleet of advanced stealth fighters exploded by nearly 50 per cent in just a few years, auditor general Karen Hogan said Tuesday in a new report.
National Defence said in 2022 the base price for the F-35s would be $19 billion. Just two years later, the number has climbed to $27.7 billion. That estimate does not include figures for infrastructure upgrades or weapons.

So that’s how we get our defense spending up to 2% or more of GDP. Don’t manage cost overruns and shift the coast guard budget to defense. No more actual defense or anything.
Maybe we should just farm this out to the US….afterall, they’re already effectively doing it!
Canada’s procurment proccess is just another way of stealing from the taxpayer, everybody in the military knows this.
With all that inflation and government-imposed delays, just what could be the root cause of such cost overruns?
We’re being baited again, this time into buying obsolete 4th generation EU fighters, while EU nations fly the F35:
Germany, Italy, Denmark, Norway and the UK, along with F35s ordered by Australia, SK, Japan and Israel.
Sell us their antiques, with inventory, maintenance and logistics lines across the Atlantic. What could go wrong?
I swear … California and Canada have sooooooo much in common …

When a Karen is telling you you’re a shit show and a world embarrassment, you best be paying attention.
When you add in the additional cost for base infrastructure and weapons, the cost is now looking something like $360 million PER PLANE, if we get 88 airframes.
I remember back in the 80s reading a series of books about planes by Bill Gunston. He noted, way back then, that the rising cost of tactical aircraft was such that the US military would soon only be able to buy one plane a year. The Air Force could use it Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and the Navy could use it Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. On Sundays, the Marines could use it.
Looks like he was prophetic.
On what days does NATO get to use it? The Clintons were able to order NATO to bomb the shit out of Libya and Yugoslavia. I guess they had the inside track to war plane rentals
I think it’s great that the gov’t of tier 2 Canada will have their maintenance for this project headquartered in Montreal at Mirabel, at whatever cost is necessary, as if the expense actually matters, and of course, Lol…

Hey, it’s the Canadian way: delay, delay, obfuscate and delay. Canada’s procurement system hasn’t been changed since the Defence Project Management System (DPMS) came into being in 1967. It consists of 8 volumes of detail with a clear cut mandate on how to not spend capital money. It is designed as a one step forward, two step back paradigm. It is said that the guy who wrote the DPMS was a genius, but on the cusp. He spent his last days in an insane asylum for mentally broken down procurement managers.
And somehow, all this money has made many Lieberal politicians and their friendly card carrying member bureaucrats extremely wealthy in the interim.
How much of this money has disappeared into the pockets of Liberals and their friends?
Would we be better off buying a fleet of the Twin Otters being manufactured in BC?
Surrendering long range arial defence to the USA,contracting them instead of pretending to be able to keep functional fighter defence?
For ,since WW2 we have “borrowed” from the USA in every mutual military operation..
Drones and Short take off are more realistic technologies..for Canada’s Northern Defence.
The benefit would be more twin otters available for civilian use .
An export industry producing a real product.
Viking Air’s re-imagination of the Twin Otter ..
A thing of beauty.
Of course this would require questioning just how do we defend Canada?
Against which threats?
For right now we are being invaded ,surrendering our nation without a shot fired..
Well except in the streets of our cities.
Everything our government touches turns to waste and destruction.
We are doomed if we allow them to “Plan our military defences”.

Federal departments did not have required security clearances on file.
In many cases they did not supervise the contractor’s work.
In 82% of cases, federal departments failed to verify that fees paid out did not exceed market rates.
The Auditor General did not indicate if the government departments ran out of brown bags.
