Too Little, Too Late

Who are these people kidding? It’s going to take an increase in defense spending well beyond a 2% target just to restock the armory that was emptied to feed the war in the Ukraine, let alone rebuild our armed forces. Our “made in Canada” procurement rules are guaranteed to gobble up those budget hikes in any event.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will unveil a new security and defence investment plan on Monday that would enable Canada to meet NATO’s 2% military spending target this fiscal year, the Globe and Mail reported, citing two senior government sources.

  1. Who are they kidding?

White, urban, college educated, mid to upper middle class women.

And doing it very successfully too.

    1. Well that and the hiring of more francophones to sit at DND HQ in Ottawa doing nothing.

  2. They’re kidding stupid middle-aged women who live in Toronto. Also known as Liberal voters.

Little known fact, Canada can’t make proper tanks. We don’t have foundries big enough to make the armor. You have to go to the USA or South Korea for that. We might not even be able to make artillery barrels, although I’m not sure on that one. Possibly there’s still an obscure foundry that can forge a barrel. Maybe. One that was cutting edge tech in the Korean war, and they haven’t touch a single thing since.

We can’t make modern jet fighters from scratch. The complex laminates and even the aluminum forgings for the airframe, we don’t have the facilities. You have to go to the USA and Europe for that.

We can’t make ships, because our ship building industry is -fabulously- corrupt and inept. The quality of workmanship simply isn’t there. Witness we still don’t have new destroyers despite spending billions.

Call me cynical, but I do not think that Mr. Net Zero is going to invest a single slim dime into foundries, forging plants, state-of-the-art gun production and cleaning up ship building. He’s not even willing to build a frigging pipeline.

      1. Trudeau spent a bunch of taxpayer money to convert some of the primary steel production furnaces to Electric Arc Furnances, so they won’t produce CO2 (or virgin steel) any more.

I believe we have one Furnace left that can do virgin steel.

    1. Israel makes their own tanks – Merkava (Chariot in Hebrew), assault rifles, mortars, artillery, the best air defense systems in the world, APC’s, rockets, missile and patrol boats. One stop shop.

Oh, that’s right – The Left Wing Lunatic Government in Ottawa hates Israel and as Carney so deftly put it just this week, “Muslim Values are Canadian Values.” Sure they are.

      OK, forget it.

  3. It’s a mere 50% increase from current defense spending, all in one year apparently. Why the naysaying folks?
I suspect Carney’s plan would be like a Third Option Leopard Tanks, Bombardier tin cans and Arrow redux hybrid.
That’s assuming this will ever happen, proper modern equipment delivered on a timely basis to the CF. Sure.
As usual, this is Grit grifter smoke and mirrors accounting, like their non-debt “investments;” a paper military only.
OTOH, being an optimist and on the same theme as their oil and gas feints, I will acknowledge only actions.

    1. It’s a mere 50% increase from current defense spending…

Doesn’t current Lieberal defense spending creative accounting also include Veterans Affairs spending? Which isn’t really defense spending? So it’s actually far more than a 50% increase? I seem to recall reading something about this during Prinz Dipshit’s reign.

  4. So ‘Elbows Up’ is going to commit to a guaranteed 2% Defence Spending. Well that makes me feel a whole lot better. The last seventy-five years of governments in this country never met their Defence commitments and now we are going to feel all safe and secure wrapped in a comfy blanket because now we’re going to spend 2% of GDP on defence. Right! That’ll put us somewhere into 1950’s era of miliary capability. We, and the other countries of the West, have sheltered under the protective military umbrella of the United States for so long that we have neither the financial or technical ability to fund national defence capability much less the stamina or fortitude to man said national defence force. Yeah! “Elbows Up. Eh!” I can’t get up off the floor from laughing so hard.

  5. I tend to think that the way federal spending works in Canada it would mean that the 2% target would be reached but only 10% of it would make it all the way to military spending and the rest siphoned off along the way.

  6. Canada hasn’t met the 2% of GDP standard and 20% of that expenditure on equipment, since 1988 when Mulroney was PM

I don’t believe what the #Libranos are promising,, that Canada will meet their NATO obligations, what they’ve promised to spend and how to spend it, without topping it up with retired Canadian Forces pension payments (prohibited in the NATO contract) …

When the gov’t of Canada HAS MET these standards, they should tell people about it, and show the accounting for this, accounting that’s been verified by someone outside of gov’t.

I’m not going to believe it until then. I haven’t seen any gov’t promise which has been followed though, or accomplished its goal, ever.

In Canada, it’s gov’t fail all the time. More gov’t = more fail, more lies, more bullshit. It never ends, or “gets better” …. it gets worse every day, every day there is a new controversy showing how the gov’t grifters lie about their lies, lie to cover up their lies, lie about lying, and tell us they’ll improve when what they actually need to do is simply stop lying, and it’s become obvious that lying and covering up the truth about their grifting is the only thing the Canadian gov’t knows to do.

How about those rifles for the Canadian Rangers in the arctic? They look fine, well made and designed in Finland by people who know what they’re doing. They contract it out to Canadians at Colt, and despite everyone saying that Colt is a great company, they fail to perform as promised. That’s the tier 2 Canadian way.
This is a small view into the problem with Canada. Gov’t touched it, and the shit-Midas touch took over, promising greatness and delivering mediocre results.

    It’s the Canadian way.

  7. I’m old enough to remember Justin Trudeau in 2019 being scolded by Trump for not hitting 2% and Trudeau talking about doing better…blah, blah, blah.

  8. The joke is going to be when they keep defense spending constant and still get to 2% of GDP because their leftist policies ruined the economy enough to get GDP down to the number they need.

  9. Just a little comparison from the Global Military site:
Canadian Navy is ranked as #39 in the world with 66 ships in service as of 2025.
Pakistan Navy is ranked as #21 in the world with 109 ships in service as of 2025.
Pakistan has a coastline of a little over 1,000 kilometers.
Canada has a coastline of a little over 150,000 miles.

  10. Bait and switch. That’s going to be Carney’s legacy. He’ll do it with defense by making promises, conceivably having finances appropriated. BUT, they will never be spent. That’s how you got the “early warning missile defense” platform from Australia. The money was appropriated way in the past.

He’s going to do the same thing with those provinces pressuring for changes. He’ll make promises. Pretend to go through the motions and never follow through. BUT, it will be enough to stop the momentum of secession talk.

Egotistical leopards don’t change their spots. He’s all in on climate change, immigration, and control. Everything he does will be towards those three goals regardless of what he says to get there. He knows better than you.

  11. So, who wants to bet the 2% spending is all with borrowed money, leaving our children and grandchildren with nothing to keep future commitments with. As for the money, I believe the Liberals will spend it. Spending other people’s money is one of the few things Liberals are good at. And, if we’re lucky, might see 10 cents of value for every dollar spent.

I’ll be surprised if anyone asks where the money is coming from. The media will be too busy getting ready to cover the upcoming protests and lawsuits over funding “the military-industrial complex” to even think about it.

  12. Heh.
    Liberal maths.
The “2%” will be the interest payments on the money we borrowed..To secretly fund the Ukrainian Nazi Army.
We stand with “Insert cause of the day”..
The next new thing..Liberals discover patriotism, honesty and the need for national defence..?
    What is next ?
    Liberals stop lying.?
    Inconceivable.

  13. C’mon people! We don’t have to increase spending, just shrink the economy! Problem solved!

  14. If Alberta and BC separated from Canada, Carnage wouldn’t have to increase defence spending to meet his NATO commitment.

  15. I foresee two possibilities, assuming the funds don’t simply evaporate as empty promises or into the hands of “consultants.”

    1) We get our young men all geared out and promptly send them to the Ukraine to die in that meat grinder.

    2) Any force created at home will be used to enforce strict adherence to 15 minute city limitations, net zero enforcement, poroitecting HAMAS lovers while they pogram Jews, taking “wealth” away from us boomers who are currently being attacked constantly in a narrative worryingly familiar with being unvaccinated filth, and preventing anyone from leaving the country.

  16. Defense spending? In Canada? It’s sure to take the form of Obama’s military aid to Ukraine … blankets, and warm coats. Because Canadians are “nice” people. They don’t believe in war. They won’t support war. So noble. So virtuous.

  17. Why don’t we try this: a Liberal – friendly company sells tampons to the CAF at $1m/ tampon until they hit 2%. No one gets hurt and everyone gets to go home safe at the end of the day.

  18. Somehow, I doubt that replacing the 50yo bazookas that Canada sent to Ukraine will be super expensive.

  19. They’ll just promote everybody so even more overpaid, useless assholes are polishing chairs on Moodie Drive and 101 Colonel By.
In the midst of their 12 years trying to purchase a new handgun, the assholes actually asked Glock if they could have some of their patents.
