Science Alert- After 856 ‘Snake Bites’, Man’s Blood Could Unlock Universal Antivenom
Self-taught venom expert Tim Friede has voluntarily injected himself with snake venom 856 times across 18 years. Now, in spite of the odds, Friede’s extremely dangerous hobby has led scientists to create the most widely effective snake antivenom on record.

“I collect spores, molds, and fungus.”
Funny, that. I had the same hobby, Eagle.
Then mom made me start changing my socks and washing my feet. I had to switch to building model airplanes.
Words to describe Tim Friede:
Insane, driven, passionate, persistent, wealthy, and (drum roll) the most likely to say “watch this” and end up in the E/R.
Hopefully all ER departments will be his final resting spot.
I think I would be fine if the media referred to him as an “expert” in his line of work/study. An expert that has his own skin in the game.
What could go wrong?……..snake eyes!

Just one minute more … gimme just one minute more! It’s gonna be alright … it’s gonna be alll alll riiiiight!
I sure hope he’s at least getting stock options.
He deserves a Noble prize.
I destroy nation’s economies, enslave their women and drink febrile tears.
I did not know Hans was Mark Carney’s pseudonym
I only cry febrile tears when I’m feeble and riled…
I’m going to form a punk rock band at the Kerby Centre and call it “Feeble and Riled”.
Remember that crocodile hunter guy… Steve something. Died from a stingray welt to his chest.
But he really lived,! Way to go!
Crikey!
I watched Steve Whathisname’s show twice, I think, before I observed the way he climbed rocks and knew he had a few years to live.
Steve Whatever had it coming because he was an exhibitionist dope.
This Snake Guy has a purpose well beyond waving his own dick around and he’s almost been proven heroically correct.
Noble Prize for Balls AND Science.
Notice a man did this.
Where are the women, clamoring that they could be just as brave and selfless, and begging to be given a shot at it, a bite at the apple, as it were?
Now, now; Eve was there first…

I looked after a patient in Australia who gave blood regularly because he’d been bitten (undiluted) by every venomous critter in the area. They used his blood to make anti-venom. Same principle. He was missing a few fingers as well since some of the venoms result in severe damage to blood vessels and lymph nodes. And like a typical Aussie, laughed it off as “all part of the fun”.
A geologist friend of mine got bit by 2 rattlesnakes simultaneously in Colorado while he was in the bush. Took him 20 minutes to get to the road where he crapped his pants and fainted. Air ambulanced and survived. I spoke to him about 8 months later and he still spoke with a slur. “Almost died” he joked with a mouth full of marbles. He credited his crew who radioed for an ambulance as soon as they heard him on the radio. You don’t have much time to get to help. I offered to give my blood for anti-venom but the doctor said wine normally isn’t that harmful.
