Blacklock’s- $42M Relief For Pot Dealers

“The cannabis industry is facing economic difficulties which threaten a key objective of the Cannabis Act which is to provide for the legal production of cannabis to displace the illegal cannabis market.

The Competition Bureau in 2023 estimated two-thirds of licensed marijuana dealers were tax delinquents. “The total amount of unpaid cannabis excise duties has continuously been rising since legalization,” said a report Planting The Seeds For Competition.

“There is an existential crisis,” said Champagne. “I hope the project continues. I can assure you we are working hard on finding new partnerships.”

  1. I don’t have a horse in this race, but I never imagined that people would “lose money” on pot sales until the gov’t was involved. It really is as Milton Friedman said re: Sahara …

      1. They can’t compete with the reserves. It’s worth the two-hour roundtrip for me to save 30% on pot (and no sales tax on top), 20 cents a liter on gas, and $100 a carton on smokes.

    1. Here in CA … we were told that TAXING “medical” marijuana sales would fund our schools!! So all the HS dropouts would pay for the next generation of HS dropouts. It must hurt your brain to think like a leftist. But since pot has wrecked all your brain cells … probably not

  2. Imagine if you will a government so incompetent that it can’t even make a profit dealing drugs.

    1. That’s a feature.
      Government only gets from:
      Taxes
      Levy’s
      Fees
      Regulations
      Licences
      Tariffs
      Duties
      Approvals
      Permits
      Penalties
      Fines

  3. Has anyone heard of 1, illegal pot grow, huge or small, being taken down yet, since pot has been legalized?
Remember, they even increased the penalties for illegal growers.
Guess the rcmp are too busy carrying suitcases across the border and giving out speeding tickets, ( you know, the easy stuff ), rather than taking down fentanyl factories or illegal grow ops.
Guess what land rcmp are hesitant to go on?

    1. They’re too busy providing security for the proHamas antisemitic parades as well.
We are living in an inverted reality.
Guard and protect yourself. Can’t rely on them anymore.

    2. But, but, but … didn’t the State also decriminalize personal possession of pot … and even allowed “patients” to grow a couple of their own plants … for personal consumption? Yeah, good luck sorting out the criminals from the … “patients”.

  4. “ What’s important is we managed to get Québec into the automobile industry.” – insert eye roll here…

    1. Quebec once was in the automotive manufacturing industry at the GM Ste Therese plant. The unions and entitled workers caused it to shutdown.

  5. This was the Spawn’s “greatest success” and yet the free market still prevails. The dead hand of government on everything it can reach.

  6. The dwarven Frog is searching for investors in a battery plant?? This can only cost taxpayers good money after bad, after stupid, after insane, in other words normal government operations. I’ve got a great idea for an ETF, a contra government investment fund. Governments are so bad at allocating capital, doing the opposite would be very profitable.

  7. Use Your Words, Child.
Nice to see the phrase “existential crisis” hasn’t gone out of favor yet; because that would be an existential crisis for existential crisis.

  8. But but but they told us all those taxes that would be collected when cannabis was legalized would actually balance budgets.

  9. Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne-Socialist, said… Northvolt, the original owner, filed for bankruptcy in its native Sweden: “What’s important is we managed to get Québec into the automobile industry.”.
    .
I don’t see how this country of Canada can survive much more of the utter stupidity, and the nonsensical actions of leaders of the Liberal Party of Canada

  10. The whole idea was stupid. The gubmint trying to compete in an industry where the competition growing a weed has little overhead and pays no taxes or licence fees.

  11. Profit margin on legal, taxes paid weed is 15%.

Anybody know any business that gets by on 15% markup?

Which everybody knew when all this started. Weed companies were basically a #LiberalParty pump-and-dump. Same as windmills, same as electric cars.

Milk the cow, don’t bother feeding it.
