Cabinet yesterday abruptly agreed to U.S. President Donald Trump’s demand that it renegotiate a 2019 trade pact.
Ford said he was traveling tomorrow to Washington, D.C. with Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc to begin renegotiating the 2019 Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement. No review of the treaty is due till 2026.

Sadly, too many Kanadians still need to feel more extreme pain. It may be worth waiting until October so that more eyes are opened to why vague promises of free stuff isn’t working.

David Eby has called to drop the tariff war with China. The same MP who wants to charge U.S. vehicles to use the Alaskan Highway (which of course doesn’t do much other than punish Canadians in northern BC and Yukon). Still, there is a treaty.

This country has always been its own worst enemy. Or more correctly, the governments thereof have been the citizens’ own worst enemy.
The difference between the US and Canada is that the US founded a nation on the concept of individual liberty, while British North America was founded on dependency of the state.
Theirs was won on the battlefield, ours was written up by bureaucrats and notarized in Westminster by more bureaucrats.

No, the USA never seriously tried to invade & annex Canada. The War of 1812 really didn’t amount to very much and while there was some fear in 1865 & 1866 that a post-Civil War USA might make the attempt, the Americans ultimately weren’t terribly interested in taking over what was then still known as British North America. The Brits were pretty spooked about the possibility considering that their Canadian & Maritime colonies were all but indefensible, nor did they want to get drawn into a war with the USA over them. Hence London was all too eager to see the colonies join together in a new confederation and start looking after themselves.
I’ve been reading a book about the build-up to confederation; lots I didn’t know (just how key New Brunswick turned out to be in it all) while the key theme – namely that the Dominion of Canada was pretty well explicitly founded as “not the USA” – is all too familiar.
Well, when you say the US didn’t try seriously to invite and annex Canada, what you mean is, they failed. The effort might not look like much today, but to the Canadians who had to fight it off it was serious enough. And importantly, it was the absolute best the Americans could do. The British concluded that the American colonies could protect themselves with minimal assistance. They didn’t revise their opinion until the Civil War turned the US from a bunch of harmless hillbillies into a military power of the first rank, and the greatest naval power on earth. And thus was born Canada, given the task of defending the indefensible, a role it has taken rather unduly to heart.
Don’t forget free trade between the States made for a great National Economy, unlike Canada’s protectiomist Provinces.

I never understood why Canada seems to hate its citizenry so much – or at least doesn’t care about making life more affordable and civilized for them. As a strategy, trying to out-Trump Trump seems like a horrible idea – but I guess we will see. When I’m on this side of the border, I hear non-stop about US tariffs and evil America. When I’m in Texas, I hear…nothing about Canadian tariffs. Good luck causing Canadians pain while your “foe” shrugs in indifference.
Ford’s ill-conceived plan to block export of electricity to the U.S. was all Trump needed to invoke another National Emergency, and, according to the existing CUSMA Free Trade agreement, that can be used to invalidate portions of that agreement. So, for the second time, Trump has legally broken the agreement, negating any avenue of appeal.
Ford walked into the woods, and stepped on a rake, and here we are. You’d think that someone in Washington was just waiting for things to happen.
If Trump doesn’t end his tariff wars soon, he’s going to hand power back to the Democrats. He doesn’t seem to understand trade or the benefits of trade between nations. He doesn’t seem to understand that the tariffs he imposes are paid by Americans and hurt the American economy. The stock market knows, it’s falling off a cliff due to the tariff war.
Trump needs to end the tariff war as soon as possible. Everything else he does is a boost to the US economy, but the tariffs will wipe all that out and more. He needs a booming economy well before the mid-terms or the Democrats will take both houses.

There is more here at play than that Dirtman. Trump’s focus appears to be reshoring high value add manufacturing, even if there is a short/medium term cost. All the Wall street types are moaning because it is shaking up their business model. Maybe Trump and those around him realize that the AI revolution will replace pretty much all workers in the “service” economy. Lawyers, many Doctors, accountants, coders, many engineers will be the first to go. AI will be good at design, but a long time before it can make stuff.

The continued existence of Canada punishes us all, a fiction maintained so the inherited entitled Laurentian Elite can play at being a country, divorced from the consequences while they go on with their pampered lives. Think of Trump, “I can fit you in at 4, I have a hostage problem to solve in Gaza at 2, and a Ukrainian ceasefire to broker at 3.” Our Canadian “leaders” have a trade dispute as their only issue. Canada is so small and insignificant, it embarrasses me to have citizenship.
