    Europe does not want to live in fear of Russian invasion (such as happened with Ukraine, Georgia, Chechnya, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary). NATO has proven to be fantastically effective at preventing that, but its principle member is withdrawing. So they must pick up the slack and improve their own defense, as they should have done years ago.

    In short, Putin dare not attack a NATO country, and Europe would like to maintain that.

    1. Europe obviously does not live in fear of Russia or they would have maintained proper military and contributed their absolute minimum 2% of GDP for defence.

      Why are there always people who instead of noticing the rules of the game, and someone blatantly cheating will side with their echo chamber friends, instead of speaking truth. After the fall of the wall, the west promised in exchange for countries being free of the Soviet block, that they would never allow one of the former satellites to become members of NATO. The west lied, and started recruiting. Crimea being the only warm water port from Russia was slipping away, so they sent 40,000, yep 40,000 troops to secure it, against a country of 44 million. Then when peace was negotiating, Biden sent Boris to scuttle the deal and here we are.

      You negotiate land, you negotiate peace, you don’t tell people peace is very very far off. If you do, you’re the problem. Zelensky knows he will face retribution for his crimes, and is seeking a way out before he closes the chapter.

            Perhaps Finand thought that NATO would defend them even if they weren’t a member. But NATO never sent troops to fight in Ukraine, so perhaps that dispelled that belief.

Before that it was only Baltic States and Poland that were trying to warn West about the nature of the Siberian beast. Most of the west would still prefer not to notice to this day. Realistically only Scandinavia and UK seem to have woken up. Mayne Netherlands too. Germans are largely useless and so is the rest of continental Europe west of Oder. France fights its own hybrid war after Wagner inspired coups in Africa destroyed French interests there. I have no doubt that they too would have been useless hadn’t Pootin did not step on their toe.

        The west lied. Donbas was being shelled by it’s own government. Why? Because the people there had the temerity to associate more with Russia than they did with Ukraine. Even voted to that effect.
        Zelensky was installed by the west in the 2014 coup. Since then, he cancelled elections, jailed his political opponents, banned a Christian religion (Russian Orthodox Church), accusing it’s prelates as Russian spies without evidence, and banned media that did not support him.
        And yet, we are being told that Ukraine is a democracy that needs NATO protection.
        At one point, I was judging Putin harshly for his draconian solution, but now I have to ask the question. Was Russia justified in invading Crimea in 2014, and again, invading Ukraine in 2022? I’m still open to arguments, but it’s increasingly becoming clear that the answer just might be “yes,” and it pains me to make that admission.

            Alternative because what? The alternative was not to invade. It rally is that simple.

            But Donbas genocide.
            There was no Donbas genocide. After 2014 there was a regional conflict that by 2021 was winding down. Speaking from memory, in 2021 the final year before the full scale war, the body count on both sides was 200 to 300 deaths. The conflict was started by russian separatists (Girkin and co) who were operating on Moscow behalf, received material and instructor support from Kremlin. When Ukrainians tried to put the end of it, russian forces attacked them (both pretending to be separatists and by firing artillery and missiles across the border) and eventually sending regular forces. Ukraine was not firing into russia. Russia was firing into Ukraine and arming and training pro russian terrorist groups. Russia has this region now well within its grasp and to this day no mass graves of victims of the alleged Donbas genocide have been found. No mass graves exhumed. No international Red Cross or UN investigators looking into piles of bodies in the dirt. Why? Because it never happened. Bucha happened. Izium happened, Mariopul happened. Everywhere russians captured, if Ukrainains did not evacuate civilians, massacres happened. Donbas genocide did not happen. Period.

            But NATO expansion.
            Again nonsense. Majority of Ukrainians were against joining NATO before 2022. Since Ukraine had unresolved border disputes, Ukraine was not eligible for NATO membership. To join Ukraine would have to be approved by all member states and there was no appetite among multiple members to allow it (Hungary and Turkey being most obvious examples, but also Germany and probably most of continental Europe that wanted good relations with russia). As a result of russian invasion two new members joined. Putin even said he was fine with that.

            So why did Putin invade? Two reasons related to one another. Putin’s approval rating prior to invasion was slipping. When a Tsar looks weak tsar dies. That is the rule of the horde. He knew that he needed to revive his popularity. He also knew that russians love to subjugate others. Again the biggest trauma of Yeltsin years was not poverty, nor inflation, nor crime. The real trauma was expressed again and again by common orks on the streets “nobody fears us anymore”. He had to make them happy. I keep repeating russia is not a product of Pootin. Pootin is a product of russia.

            The second reason are Pootin’s personal ambitions. He wants to be remembered as a tsar who restored russia to its past imperial glory. When you go over his winter 21-22 demands he is very clear about that. He wants Central Europe to be under russian boot. He knows perfectly well than none wants to invade russia from Europe (Chinese eventually will but that is a separate matter). He cannot achieve this aim with Ukraine choosing its own path. So he will deny them that option and he does not care how many orks will fertilize Ukrainian soil in the process.

    Most people don’t understand that Britain declared war on Germany because Germany invaded Poland in 1939, then we were allied with the Soviet Union when they did exactly the same thing two weeks later. The Soviets invaded Finland two months after they invaded Poland and the same allied forces who were at war with Germany allied with the Soviet Union were providing material support to the Finns in their war with the Soviet Union.

    1. The Soviet Union was allied with Germany which started the invasion of Poland. The Nazi tank crews that eventually rolled into Paris had been trained in the Soviet Union and they were filled with Soviet fuel.

The USSR knew how dangerous Germany was, knew very well the German intent to march East and enslave or kill off the majority of the Russian slavs if they could, and desparately needed a way to lock down the Germans against a dangerous aggression. The reason Germany had a free hand to smash France, Norway and Denmark is DIRECTLY because the Allies hated Russians so much they refused a pact with them. So the USSR gave up and said the next best thing is a pact with Germany. They needed a pact to secure their Western border. If the Allies had agreed to a pact with the USSR to defend Poland (which was the USSR’s proposal), as soon as Hitler crossed the border, he’d have been facing the Red Army, the Poles, and very likely Western allied airpower sortying out of Soviet bases in Belarus, with ground forces on the way to join the Eastern offensive. While the French held the West. The Western allies would have control of the Baltic then, a secure northern flank in the Med, and Germany would have been crushed outright in the opening stages. The Wehrmacht was relatively small still, their tanks were not that great yet, and their airforce suffered from a dangerous lack of range and heavy strike capabilities, compared to the combined air forces of the Soviets and the West, as of 1939. If the West had not left the USSR with no choice but to lure Hitler into a pact to keep their Western border secure, WW2 would never have happened.

            We’ll never know what might have happened if the Russians had achieved their alliance, since the Poles would never consider it. For all we know, Hitler would have proceeded in exactly the same way with the same result.             *Coincidently in terms of basic count russia had more tanks in 1941 than in 1945.

          3. Since you mention it, I am aware that the Russians were engaged in open war against Japan in 1939. That’s one of the reasons why their options were restricted in Europe. They needed their real strength elsewhere.

            They certainly did have strength. They had no idea how to use it. Their plan in case of war was to launch non-stop mechanised offensives. If they’d tried that against the Germans in Poland, they’d have been wiped out. The Germans knew how to handle an attack by tanks, as they proved against the British in North Africa.

          1. Soviet Union has clearly stated that they want Poland eliminated once and for all. They failed in 1920 but never gave up that ambition.
          2. Soviet Union consistently collaborated with Germany, Ribbentrop-Molotov pact (probably the last international agreement that russia honored) was a results of years long collaboration and helping Germany develop their war machine. This included technical exchange, training grounds, intelligence exchange etc.
          3. After the fall of Poland, russia continued supplying Germany with raw materials and food. This only ended when Hitler betrayed his most reliable ally. None of Hitler’s advances in the West would have been possible without russian economic support.
          4. Between the start of the war and Barbarossa russia invaded six countries and either conquered them entirely or kept parts of them.

          P.S. “russia” and “Soviet Union” are to be used interchangeably as it does not matter what is the name of the Madame in the Siberian brothel, that has no right to exist anyway.

Their first war with the USSR, the Winter War, ended with a Finnish defeat/Soviet phyrric victory in 1940, and their second, the Continuation War, started in June of 1941, in conjunction with Operation Barbarossa, the Nazis’ invasion of Soviet Russia. That war ended in 1944, also with a Finnish defeat (this time a very decisive one), in which Finland got off much more lightly than they should have. They can thank the Americans for that, as the US government of the day (who’d remained neutral even after joining the war against Germany) advocated quite strongly for lenience. OTOH the British, who’d actually declared war on Finland in 1941 didn’t particularly care what happen to one of Hitler’s little allies.

        Had Finland remained neutral in 1941, they wouldn’t have lost anything else, and the Soviets would have been in no shape to bother them either during or for quite some time after the war.
