Regarding the agreement on minerals and security, Ukraine is ready to sign it in any time and in any convenient format. We see this agreement as a step toward greater security and solid security guarantees, and I truly hope it will work effectively.

        The agreement doesn’t even mentiong buying minerals from Ukraine. They don’t need an agreement for that. Ukraine will be always be willing to sell minerals to the U.S. at market price. Rather it means that the U.S. will own a significant chunk of Ukraine’s mineral industry, including “deposits of minerals, hydrocarbons, oil, natural gas, and other extractable materials”.

  14. It’s hard to say exactly what Zelensky’s popularity is. The country is at war and who knows what the accuracy of polls are? BBC said that after Trump suggested Ukraine started the war his popularity was near 90%. Even if his popularity is 60% nobody is clamouring for an election. The Ukrainian Constitution precludes holding an election during a state of emergency.

    Yeah I know it’s the BBC. Maybe there are other polls.

  16. This is weirder than most people realize… A deal on minerals has already been executed between the UK and Ukraine (done before Trump even took office). The deal proposed between the US and Ukraine would undercut the arrangement with the UK.

    The arrangements end up being very complicated, and one suspects that the increased complications are what corrupt Ukrainians want to ensure the graft pipeline continues.

      Exactly. The deal was done, he *agreed* to it, then demanded a photo-op signing ceremony at the White House. Total setup; he couldn’t get what he wanted in the negotiations, so he tried to use the public and news media to ‘shame’ Trump into giving him what he wanted. Huge mistake.

  28. I can see a few flies in the ointment with any ‘agreement’ signed with Zelensky the first and biggest being Zelensky has no signing authority. He is not the president. His term ended about a year ago. Kind of like negotiating with Trudeau who is illegally occupying the PMO. Then there is the small problem of the ‘resources’ that Zelensky is signing over. The vast majority are on the East side of the Dnipier River IOW under Russia’s control. One final point is the Zelensky already signed away all those mineral rights to Britain.
