No matter which option you pick, your credit card statement will inevitably say otherwise. Consumers eking out a living in a stagnant economy don’t have the luxury of making such choices.
But the survey found even though some items may cost more, most Canadians are willing to spend more money to keep that buy Canadian with 53 per cent willing to pay $5 more to buy a local product.
Another 33 per cent said they were willing to spend $10 extra.
Many folk on this site are willing to condemn folk for trying to get more value for dollar by vacationing in Cuba or buying Chinese products.
Vacationing in Cuba is not value, it is just cheaper, because the food is awful and there is almost none, and power is scarce, etc. etc.
Friends just got back from 10 days in Fidel land. No power outages or food shortages at their half-full resort. And they said there was nothing wrong with the food quality.
However, there are lineups that are miles long for gas and diesel fuel, and the locals are having a rough time getting food. The locals blame the continuation of the UKraine war for causing Russia to drastically cut back on exports.
They are surviving only because of strong family and community bonds: people helping each other out.

Tried and failed to find the exact question asked which is suspect. All the media reporting the same copy pasta from the press release. How was the question worded? Is this $5 more on a $1000 appliance? Is this $5 more on a $7 shirt?

The great majority of Canadians think that duties on US imports will punish the US. Canada’s US goods imports are very roughly $200b per year and $100b in services. US GDP is about $28 trillion per year (World Bank). Will the US notice issues with 1/250 of their economy? No. It’s a typical Canadian empty gesture that will send up to $30b more of Canadians’ income to Ottawa and produce zero leverage on the US.

I always buy local unless I can’t get it here, then online from Canada, and only when I can’t get it from those sources will I buy online from the US. That’s always been my policy, has nothing to do with Trump or tariffs. I buy whatever best suits my needs, don’t really care where it’s made. Most likely these days it’s made in China, even when the company is western.

I see no reason for wanting to pay extra for most things because it’s Canadian. If it’s good, that’ll make the difference, and I know some Canadian owned companies still making quality items in Canada. Gray Tools for example, even though a significant % of their tools are from out of Canada and re-branded as Grey Tools.

Meanwhile, back in the real world I just paid my Enbridge gas bill. Total $169 of which $48 is carbon tax, $20 is HST. So a total of 40% of my bill is taxation.

Compare the carbon tax to the amount charged for just the gas. The rate will likely be greatly than one-hundred per cent.

Note that the last line only applies to random surveys not this one which used Leger’s online panel, who are “paid” to take surveys. Also, I wasn’t able to find either the questions or crosstabs. Hill & Knowlton’s website is horrible.
