Buy Local…Until You Can’t

Despite the ongoing displays of jingoistic pseudo-patriotism, the brittleness of the Canadian economy becomes more and more apparent every day. In reality, much of what these stores sold was not even made in Canada anyway.

Several Canadian fashion retailers will be closing their doors after ownership company Comark Holdings announced it has filed for creditor protection.

Comark is the Vancouver-based parent company of retail brands Bootlegger, Ricki’s and cleo.

The company currently has 221 stores across eight Canadian provinces.

  1. Their troubles started during the Covid plandemic.
Which makes the lockdowns the only thing Justin Trudeau’s Liberal and the BC’s NDP governments have done, during the last nine years, to put Drug Dealers and Bootleggers out of business.
It actually seemed to help the Drug Dealers.

  2. If it wasn’t for rampant money laundering, there wouldn’t be -any- retail in Canada. They’d all be gone.

Been to the mall, lately? It’s empty.

  3. How can you determine where things come from when “Product of Canada” and “Made in Canada” have entirely different meanings?

Sardo Greek Olives (ingredients): Made in Canada from imported and local ingredients. I assume none of the ingredients come from Greece or it would explicitly say that. This confusion is on purpose because not much is made in Canada anymore, so they change the meaning of made.

    1. Over 90% of the food produced in Canada spends at least one step of the process in the United States. We no longer have the capability to do it here anymore. Whether it’s processing, canning, packaging or whatever. If Trump closed the border we would be starving within a week.

  4. Of all the products in Bootlegger, Ricki’s, and Cleo, there are zero, or nearly zero products, that were actually made in Canada.

    1. Vietnam, Pakistan, Bangladesh and China seem to be the most popular countries of origin in these retail outlets.

      1. As an aside, one of the littluns flew over to South Korea last summer for a conference. Hit a Harley dealership in Seoul to pick me up a couple t-shirts. Made in…Mexico.

    2. Clicking on the link, seeing the photo caption “…Bootlegger location at the Midtown Plaza in Saskatoon.” my next thought was: “There are still shops operating in the Midtown Plaza in Saskatoon?!”

  6. My Canada West work boots and Tough Duck coveralls are made in Winnipeg.

And despite the Proudly Canadian labels on their boxes, Acton boots are all now made “over there”, as are Terra boots.

  7. It’s a kind of poor man’s pursuit these days to point out to the neo-patriots what is manufactured in Canada and pointing out that it doesn’t include coffee beans, sugar cane, and the government won’t just let you set up a dairy farm unless you agree to let them in for a cut a da action.
When they respond by looking at me like I’ve got a third eye I ask, what they take in their coffee.

  8. Made in Canada you say, well legally only thirty percent of said product must be produced here to qualify, that includes the cardboard coverings. Products can be made in China and wrapped in Canadian cardboard, do you still feel superior?

  9. Muh I won’t buy Kentucky Bourbon, I’ll buy Canadian Rye instead. But I’ll get it in the U.S. where it’s cheaper…

  10. Wait until Marc Carnage is coronated. He promises to replace the very unpopular Consumer Carbon Tax with his “Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism” (CABM). which is a new Climate Tariff to tax any import coming into Canada, to punish “polluters” for not conforming to his Green agenda. The self avowed Globalist is going to fast track the destruction of our economy, skyrocket consumer prices and drive away investment and business out of Canada. You will own nothing and be happy.

  11. No worries, Virtue Signalling Canadastanis are doing their utmost best to scrutinize the labels of what they are buying!
They will continue their patriotism while surfing Amazon, watching Netflix, posting on Facebook, sipping their lattès from Starbucks, while wearing their Levis and Nikes.
I guarantee you, this Virtue Signalling will succeed, no doot aboot it!

  12. Psst … Canada!, err America del Norte’ … American, err Multi-National, err post-National, manufacturers don’t give half a shit about your puny marketplace. Nahhh … they’re after your daddy’s marketplace. They’ve completely sold out to communist China and their BILLION mouths to feed.

  13. I think that the “Buy Canada” movement doesn’t go far enough. For all the right reasons I am committed to buying just what is grown within a mile of my home. My diet now consists of hay and garlic – anyone can do it if they are really committed!

    1. ^^ LOL ^^

If I bought local … I’d be consuming nothing but marijuana edibles … mixed with miners lettuce that grows wild in the shade of the oak trees.

  14. Hey hey..

40 million dummies sitting on top of tons of resources is not nothing.. It serves no purpose to fight with 350 million south of the border dummies..

They have 10X the population and 26X the economy.. Yes we can F-around, but in the long run any lasting solutions we might have will just get us invaded.. That’s what we get for being 12 inches tall..

Sit down, give the god king what he wants and lets get on with our lives :).. He will move on like the next day..
