Sun- Trudeau announces 25 per cent targeted retaliatory tariffs on American goods

Trudeau held a news conference Saturday evening to announce that Canada will respond with an immediate $30-billion retaliation package, which will be followed by $125 billion in duties on American products in 21 days to give companies and supply chains time to find alternatives.

Canada’s retaliation plan will include everyday items such as American beer, wine, bourbon, fruits and fruit juices, including orange juice, along with vegetables, perfume, clothing and shoes, Trudeau said.

      3. Argentina’s economy has gained a more solid footing and is on track for normalization. Inflation has come down to pre-2023 crisis levels, the economy is showing signs of recovery, consumer and investor confidence are on the rise, and government bonds have regained much of their value.

        All in a single year by a leader emulating Trump’s approach. And, as I like to point out, Argentina has the potential to produce and mine many of the same products/resources currently provided by Canada. The previous US administration put off finalizing a trade agreement with Milei likely for petty reasons associated with his politics. It wouldn’t shock me if Peter Navarro was down there right now having a chat.

  6. Cross border shoppers are not paying Canadian taxes on their purchases. Those taxes could help their Provinces pay for their Health Care, Education and Defence. Stay home, shop locally, cross border shoppers and pay your share for your Country.

So basically you really can not bring anything in because of custom duties.

          I did a quick search, and the Canadian prairies grow a lot of sugar beets. There are several processors that refine the beets into sugar. Canada has a plentiful supply of refined sugar and is highly price competitive against other countries.

          So, lots of cheap sugar in Canada, which explains all those low-cost sweets you mentioned.

      The US has bigger trade deficits with China, Mexico, Germany, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Italy, and India than it does with Canada. See chart 5 in the link below.

      The Canadian trade deficit with the US is entirely due to energy exports. see chart 7 in the link. Excluding energy, the US enjoys a $25 to $45 billion trade surplus with Canada.

Free trade within Canada and with those we do business is the only policy that makes sense.

Apples and other fruit in season. We did not import foods from all over the world. I know most here are not old enough to have experienced that first hand but that is the way it was. Canadians grew the wheat that my grandmother and mother made into bread, white bread. Our longevity was quite high, a low of 88 years of age, to a high of 99 and 100.
        To say we can’t live without imported foods and be healthy is just plain BS.

    This isn’t just about the CAD/USA border. but the other CDN international borders — entry points, ports — Canada needs to massively increase security there. The theft and export of autos is a hint; Chinese precursors may enter this way. The remaining border, mostly sea, need attention as well.

    I roughed out the cost of a wall on the US border (like the one Trump is building at the US southern border) and came up with a cost of $60 billion. Given that Trump would easily agree to bear half the cost of that, I’ve no idea why we’re screwing around with tariffs to the tune of hundreds of billions. Are Trudeau and Zelensky related?

      The US has 750 military bases around the world. I was surprised when I first heard that number (it might have been a Musk remark), so I looked it up. Sure enough, a number of sources report this.

      The US had 228,000 military personnel stationed overseas as of Sep 2023.

    In Canada we watched as the government ran rough shod over the citizens in the name of a pandemic.

    The USA tho is experiencing another Constitutional phenomenon and that is governing by decree.

    Americans fought to free themselves from, among other things to rid themselves from the Devine right of Kings. They wanted liberty and respect for the rights of the individual.

    The American Constitution never anticipated ruling by decree. It is anthical. Congress makes law. At the moment the US is being governed by a president who is ruling beyond his constitutional power. He is bypassing Congress.

    I can’t imagine this continuing.

    Terry Corcoran (Stop building trade fortresses. End all tariffs) arguing for unilateral free trade in Wednesday’s Post was a breath of fresh air after a week of economically ignorant politicians bloviating about tariff war with the US. Melanie Joly dropped her Liberal leadership aspirations in order, she said, to fight back, and slapping countervailing tariffs on Florida orange juice and everything else “is on the table.” The Liberal brain trust, such as it is, not being invited to the Trump inauguration, will be spending the weekend on yet another of their pricey resort retreats, to plan their trade war “strategy,” led of course, by their Dear Leader, who supposedly retired, but like the feline of song, keeps coming back because he just won’t stay away.

    Here’s the thing, though. Mr. Corcoran is correct. Tariffs are stupid. And countervailing tariffs are even stupider. For your readers who are not economics nerds like me, a tariff is when your neighbour, out of nowhere, suddenly slaps you hard across the face. Countervailing tariffs are when you retaliate for that insult by slapping yourself twice as hard on the other cheek. That’s what our provincial and federal Solons are all busy contemplating right now, how hard they’re going to punch us in the face to show Orange Man Bad how tough they are. On the plus side, at least it’ll give them a new excuse to summon “greedy” grocery CEOs to Ottawa to get blamed for the next round of inflation that their idiotic economic policies cause.

    Meanwhile, as our masters clutch their pearls in fright at Trump’s bruited 25% tariffs, the existing interprovincial trade barriers that neither the Feds or the Provinces can be arsed to remove are, in effect, already a 20% – 25% tariff on the domestic economy. You want to offset any damage the Mean Tweeter-in-Chief might cause with his tariffs? Try getting rid of those domestic barriers. Oh, and, eliminating the agricultural marketing board tariffs would make up for the other 5% (and then some), and would also perhaps get Trump to cut his 25% to something lower. Of course, that would require the current administration to put Canada ahead of their own personal and Party interests. We need an election.
