That Sinking Feeling

All the Bank of Canada has ever done is extend nearly limitless credit to parties with neither the means nor the intent to repay. At this point, that’s like sticking a fish pond pump into the hold of a ship which has all the drain cocks open.

Christopher Ragan, a professor at McGill University’s Max Bell School of Public Policy, told the panel that while he believes the Bank of Canada will be forced to cut rates, there is not much it can do to address the kind of shock that tariffs of that magnitude would have on the Canadian economy.

“Lower the interest rates all you want, it’s probably not going to stimulate much investment,” Ragan said.

    1. Exactly, Marlene!!

The whole point of the tarrifs was to get Canada to analyze and adjust the drug and open border policies of illegal immigration allowed by colour-blind Canadian Liberals.

Seems as though the Liberals, their lap dog media, Dippers and Greens are afraid of looking like American servant’s instead of standing up for Canadians and protecting our country, showing that they actually care about what actually happens on Canadian soil.

Hey Liberals!!! Fix this country!!! Then there won’t be any tarrifs and all this DRAMA can be averted.

      1. There’s nothing to fix in this context. There are no open borders in Canada, and if the Americans want to impose ruinous drug and immigration policies they have their own country to impose it upon.

        1. Americans are too busy fighting wars overseas (Iraq, Syria, etc.) to protect their own borders.

Why does the US have troops outside the USA? Since WW2 has the US won a war?

          1. There is nothing to protect US borders from! The threat is Al-Quaeda and Iran and that threat requires fighting overseas, not standing uselessly at the borderz.

        2. No open borders in Canada….which is why tens of thousands of fake refugees have strolled across at Roxham Road and keep flying in here. Wake up.

  1. “it’s probably not going to stimulate much investment…”

Oh, it’ll stimulate LOTS of investment – but only in Canadian dollars. And the Canadian dollar’s value is sinking steadily to that of waste paper, so I doubt it’ll do us a lot of good. Perhaps we should rename the Canadian dollar the “Rasbucknik” – I’m pretty sure the copyright on that has expired by now…

    1. No it won’t raise Canadian dollar investment. Investment capital of any kind has been fleeing south of the border into the United States for a decade. Lowering interest rates here will do nothing to combat the massive burden of Canadian government regulation and taxes. Those two things along with uncontrolled inflation are why Canada’s economy is collapsing.

  2. I suppose we could try and stop drugs and criminals at our borders and avoid tariffs that way. Nah, let’s whine.

  3. From the outset this has been a stupid discussion by the lamestream media. The answer is crushingly simple. The tariffs will never happen as long as DJT gets what he wants:
    1. stop the flow of fentanyl into the US;
    2. stop the flow of illegal migrants into the US;
    3. live up to Canada’s own commitment on defense;
Since all those things are in our best interest anyway, this whole discussion about “lowering interest rates” is simply pointless.

    1. The Liberals have been stoking anti-American sentiment for over half a century, they think that they’ll lose face if they do what Trump wants. Add in an unhealthy dose of TDS and the natural Liberal predilection of only spending the bare minimum of public money on anything other than themselves and their vote-buying schemes.

    2. Pure psychosis. Trump has made clear that he actually believes the trade ‘deficit’ with Canada is a subsidy. He’s made his own insane views on trade known for decades. The imaginary river of mass immigration and fentanyl from Canada into America is an excuse and a hallucination.

        1. “Everything you write about everything is an excuse and hallucination.”

(S)he’s just trolling. No one could possible be as oblivious to reality and common sense in their day-to-day life as ‘UnMe’ pretends to be. Even our Jessica (consumed with blinding hatred as she is) has at least a glimmer of intelligent thought now and then, but not this one…

          1. “Since all those things are in our best interest anyway…”

Yes but the problem, for several decades, is that things which are in Canada’s interest, are not necessarily in the best interest of Canada’s then-ruling Party, whether LIE-beral or CON-servative; in fact they almost never are. And that break always, only ever goes one way.

“Screw the country – I’m rich!!!” Remember, we’ll live in pods. eat bugs. own nothing and be HAPPY…

    3. Re Stop the flow of fentanyl into the US.

In 2023 the USA imported 641 million de minimis packages directly from China, 101 million from Mexico, and 91 million from Canada. De minimis means no US Customs duties.

      https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/drugs-fentanyl-shipping/

Canada will have very little to any effect on fentanyl coming from China.

But perhaps the answer is for all shipments of goods to the USA to go through Canada. Canada can open and thoroughly inspect all letters, parcels, containers, etc. before they are shipped on to the US. Exporters and Importers (Americans) can pay the cost of inspection.

This would have the added benefit of reducing pollution at US ports.

    4. 100% cgh

President Trump has plainly said why the tariffs would be placed, and MSM has instead focused on Canada retaliating with tariffs on American made goods, focusing on everything but the actual problem.
The denial of the actual problem, runs deep in Canada. Perhaps when actual changes are made, hopefully in the next year, they’ll open their eyes.

      1. There is no ‘problem’ with Canada here and the denial is entirely on people like you and cgh.

  4. Quit NATO, disallow overflight of US aircraft, buy European fighter jets, put a 50% tariff on US manufactures, cancel the Seaway agreement, put a $2,000 truck inspection free on each trailer to pay for unloading and reloading, pay the UK and France to provide a division of troops and station them on the US border, join OPEC. It wouldn’t take long for Americans to back off.

    1. Do that, and just watch Uncle Sam’s army March down Yonge St, 2 days after crossing the border.
      Easy
      Peasy.
Or maybe you think the Canadian bureaucratic army can throw pens and clipboards as a defence tactic.
Our country’s leadership is embarrassingly incompetent, let alone our excuse for a military. We deserve to be invaded and taken over by a stronger, competent country.

        1. This shows your complete incompetence and incoherence. Canada has NO effective military.
Back to your bridge and goat.

          1. It’s not about us, it’s about them. Invading Canada would tear America apart and end their ability to raise money.

        2. Holy Sweet Jayzuz, what are you smoking?

The Bangor Police could take over Canada and its unmanned, unequipped “Forces” quicker than a Liberal has his hand in your pocket .

To say nothing of your typical Canadian Liberal Girlymen as the Resistance.

          Pink Dawn.

          Svend and the DEI Brigade.

          The comedy writes itself.

          1. The problem isn’t invading a country, the problem is keeping control of it.

The US can’t stop arsonists in California, nor can they stop fentanyl in the 640 million packages that are sent from China each year, now some proTrumpers want to invade?

      1. Much quicker than that, Dan. The 10th Mountain Division is less than two hours from Ottawa by helicopter. I would all be over the same day it started.

And you are embarrassingly wrong about Canada’s military. It’s always been extremely high quality in its personnel and training. It’s in equipment that it’s always been deficient. Being as absurd as UnMe is not a competition you want to win.

        1. The years of budget cutting and DEI by the LIEberals leaves the military unprepared for an invasion by Outer Slobovia, let alone Uncle Sam.
I will admit, our military is good at sandbags, flipping pancakes and pride parades, but they couldn’t stop a Seal Team.

        2. The US invaded Iraq in 2023. The U.S. is still fighting there.

No more wars Trumpy isn’t going to invade.

    2. This list mostly amounts to matching American self-destruction with our own. Tariffs are always a self-own.

Just ignore them and seek new trade partners particularly China. Massively increase immigration and the military but get our new plans and tanks and toys from not America because they are not reliable.

    3. scar, Canada is broke. The things you’ve suggested would make this worse, for a country that not all that many people would fight for on a good day, the UK and France don’t have extra divisions of military sitting there waiting for hire, joining OPEC wouldn’t allow us to export oil through the east coast and there’s no reason for AB/Sask. to supply the eastern provinces anyways except that that pipeline is already there, it wouldn’t take more than an American threat and a day for tier 2 Canada to collapse.

and what difference would it make to Canadians?

    4. “Quit NATO, disallow overflight of US aircraft, buy European fighter jets, put a 50% tariff on US manufactures, cancel the Seaway agreement, put a $2,000 truck inspection free on each trailer to pay for unloading and reloading, pay the UK and France to provide a division of troops and station them on the US border, join OPEC. It wouldn’t take long for Americans to back off.”

      Pure fantasy, sorry.

The Americans would continue to fly their airplanes over Canada *wherever they want* , the UK and France would not lift a finger to stop them (do you think they are insane??) and it would be awfully hard to pay anyone anything when our entire economy has crashed.

Yeah, it’s fun to think about…but that’s all.

      1. Is this the same UK that uses its navy to ferry thousands of illegal enrichers across the English Channel every month?? They’re too busy destroying the UK to help us.

    5. If European fighter jets were free we couldn’t afford to acquire them, crew them, maintain them, build bases for them in numbers sufficient to deny airspace as large as ours to the Americans (or to others.) All of our air defence is integrated in NORAD, in which we are the very junior partner.

Neither the U.K. nor France could raise a division to lend us (which we can’t afford to rent anyway) and ten divisions couldn’t secure our border with the U.S.A. Our population is too small to defend the country, and if we conscripted everyone of age to be of any use (i.e.including those not physically capable of frontline service) we couldn’t afford to train and equip them.
Canada is a ward of the U.S.A., arguably more dependent than it was on the Imperial power of Great Britain.

I don’t like it any more than you do but we live in the real world no matter how hard we disbelieve it.

  5. Trump is up his ass with tariff talk. He doesn’t know WTF he’s talking about. The US tried this crap in the 30’s depression and found tariffs hurt domestically and they quit.

The bond markets are already nervous about what he’s proposing. But go ahead FAAFO.

      1. Relying on Unme and Yahoo for financial advice is like relying on a Liberal for water to put out a fire.

You and your money are going to burn.

        2020 Liberals:

        Math doesn’t matter…..

        Debt doesn’t matter…….

        Water doesn’t matter……….

      2. Yes!! Put it into Canadian gov’t bonds which pay 2% LESS than US bonds…along with the 35% devaluation of the CAD dollar under Blackface.

      3. You didn’t pay attention during President Trump’s tenure.
Or you are a FILTHY LIBERAL liar.

Facts don’t lie, pay attention, I’m educating you.
President Trump had America at $1.98 gas, record stock markets, best Black employment, and became energy self sufficient. No cross dressing luggage thieves, pretending to be Nuclear Experts,
AND zero Wars, and he smeared the inbred GOATFUCKER Soulamani all over the pavement like roadkill.

        UnMe is a FILTHY LIBERAL.

    1. “Trump is up his ass with tariff talk. He doesn’t know WTF he’s talking about. ”

I think he knows exactly what he is talking about…and so do the financial markets. It’s a negotiating tactic of exactly the type he is famous for.

I wasn’t thrilled about the all Canada/Greenland/Panama/Gulf of America talk, but I just watched a video press interview where Trump actually said something like, “It’s not just about me, I didn’t win it all alone…it’s about the Republican Party becoming the party of the common people and the unions”. THAT’S the kind of talk that I (and many others) have been waiting to hear from Donald Trump for a long time now.

Still not my favourite person, but I would have voted for him anyway.

      1. Yes, it’s about making you feel good with repackaged leftist tripe and leaving you to believe in non-existent ‘negotiating tactics’ which are really just shakedown attempts (he gave Afghanistan to the Taliban after all). Your money will burn.

  6. Don’t worry, be happy. The Government will look after us.
CanadianGovernments should quit trying to be a sugar daddy. Past time to develop resources, including people, not equalization payments. Export more goods and services, what other people want, and less arrogance.

      1. joe, someone must want coal, oil , gas, uranium, lumber, iron ore and many of the other resources we have more of than the rest of the world. Just get rid of all the socialists/ communists and start selling, before China just takes it.

    1. The only point of exports is imports. Just embrace free markets the rest will take care of itself. End restrictions on FDI.
