Another vehicular mass casualty event has been reported, this one in New Orleans. Dozens have been injured and killed. More to follow in this thread.

CNN is covering with live updates.

“We do know that the city of New Orleans was impacted by a terrorist attack,” Cantrell said, noting the incident is still under investigation.

Shortly later, an FBI agent told reporters, “This is not a terrorist event.” It was not immediately clear why the mayor and the FBI had differing information.

This is purportedly a photo of the perp but it appears fake to me.

The Ford Lightning with Texas plates may be a rental.

Western Standard: Local media identified the killer as 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar.

  10. I wonder if we brought back “cruel and unusual punishment” in the public square such as was practiced in say Britain in times past, if that would help act as a deterrent for these horrendous crimes.
    Barbaric to be sure but then if a killer is looking at disembowelment, head on a spike or some such gory end, then they may come to the conclusion that just offing them self may be a more practical approach to their self loathing.

In 1996 I lucked into a hotel on Bourbon street. Posts were placed at every intersection with crossing streets mostly to prevent some drunk idiot from turning on to Bourbon Street. Those posts came down every morning about 9 AM. In the evening Bourbon street turned into a large party (reminding me of Fraternity parties given the smells of alcohol, stale vomit and urine). It was often standing room ONLY even at 12 am on a random Wednesday in August with temps over 90 Fahrenheit, Cant imagine how crowded it would be on a New Years Eve,

There seems to be some hesitancy to label this as an act of terrorism as it’s clearly an ongoing investigation, and I thought it may be important to note that “Jabbar” is one of the core names from islam, and at least if it’s not clearly an act of terrorism, you can be certain that it’s an act of islam

    I think it’s important to note in the above Poso link from Joe @ 2.20 pm, that being afraid of offending someone because of the clearly islamic connection to Jabbar (and Hussien from the Fort Hood act of terror) is partly what emboldens the perpetrators of these acts. I think it’s rare for other adherents to popular religions of the world to behave like this. There seems to be a connection.

          Jabbar’s English here seems better than the New Orleans FBI agent who commented initially that this wasn’t a terrorist event. Note he does say, “dotting I’s and crossing T’s” and I expect something instead of nothing from those FBI agents flying in today from DC.

  34. US Army Chain of Command was apparently told that this guy was dangerous when he was in uniform, but the Chain of Command was afraid, so they did nothing. Maybe too soon to know how true this is.

    But the Fort Hood shooter had ‘Soldier of Allah’ (SoA) on his business cards, everyone he worked with knew he was a dangerous one – and those coward weasels in his Chain of Command did nothing – and they’re bastard doctors, they can say anything to anyone in the Army, ruin careers with their ‘tough decisions’, etc. And they were still too cowardly to say something. Can’t trust any of these people.
