          My lovely sister died suddenly at 1:15 a.m. on March 15. The emergency room doctor who called me needs a lesson in diplomacy. Right after he told me she died, he told me to hurry up and get her picked up by a funeral home because Friday and Saturdays were their busy days in ER with lots of stabbings and they needed the room in the morgue.

    1. On this, we agree, except I’ll go further than giving no quarter. I want to present all of them, especially the Turd himself with Nuremburg neck ties.

      I doubt if we’ll ever see justice, because when people realize what has happened to them, and what their leaders have done to them, faith in our public institutions will drop to near zero.

      The authorities can never let this happen.

      The only way we’ll see justice is if some outside entity rescues us, much like the allies rescued people living under the auspices of the third Reich, and prosecutes those who would perpetuate such crimes. But since the entire globe was in on this scam, the outside forces would have to come from another planet, so unless there is intelligent life out there somewhere in the universe that’s been observing what has happened here, I don’t see justice coming any time soon.

      It will happen eventually, but I’m afraid it won’t happen in my lifetime. Also, all of the bad actors would have left this world when justice finally does come, so there would be no one left to be accountable.

      Forgive the pessimism. It’s really late, and I have had a very long day.

    4. It looks like Axios is trying to create a division where none really exists. MAGA types have not been complaining about skilled labour legally entering the US. They have been complaining about illegal and unskilled labour entering the US. Shutting down the border has always been about shutting the door on illegal drugs and immigrants. The comments about “a culture of mediocrity” refer to the covering up of falling educational standards and the denigration of the Protestant work ethic. There is some grumbling of H-1B visa is mainly done by people by hi-tech workers and, as far as I can tell, mainly regarding suppressed wages and credentialism.

Try harder. Be original. Make us believe that you actually came up with a reasonable, coherent argument all by yourself.

  6. I was living in Ottawa during that Ice Storm. I escaped relatively unscathed. Where I lived in Ottawa was one of the very few neighborhoods that kept our electricity. Everywhere around us was dark. The video explained that the storm lasted 80 hours. That’s nearly 4 days. I remember being skittish every time the forecast predicted more freezing rain for the rest of that 98 winter.

    Ottawa was also hit hard, but not as hard as Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec.

    Come to think of it, that was the first winter I had spent in my house that I just bought.

    1. Funny… That was precisely my experience as well — our power was out for a grand total of 20 minutes in my little part of Ottawa and it was the first winter I had spent in the house we’d bought in March 1997.

    2. I lived in Ottawa at that time too. We were in the dark for about 24 hours. Others in the neighbourhood were out for a week and I had friends who lived in the rural area outside Ottawa who were without power for 6 weeks.

  9. Just finished watching the video on the ice storm of the century.
    Of course, the video had to end with your standard fear-mongering of hints of the dangers of climate change by suggesting that such storms may happen again, but more frequently.

    Of course storms of this magnitude will happen again. This storm was a weather anomaly. Weather anomalies happened before, and will happen again. It’s called “weather!”

    1. Noticed that sly climate alarmist comment as well. At the time people just thought of the storm as freak weather. Nowadays, thanks to fairly common hydrocarbon-fuelled backup generators the impact would be much less severe.

    I say no.

    It took me five years to complete a four year engineering degree. I worked 10 to 20 hours a week while going to university, taking a slightly reduced course load each year. Come out debt free.

    Debt relief can come from universities’ endowment funds, and left wing professors.

  17. Speaking of the war in the Gaza Strip, Israel stormed a “hospital” evicting all 350 inhabitants including 50 “patients”. This was reported by Democracy Now which is some form of gold-plated, blue-ribboned bastion of honest journalism.

    What Democracy Now failed to report on was … who was in the hospital other than patients. In a place with virtually no medical help available, 300 staff for 50 patients?

    1. People who had no where else to go. Any standing structure is cover and a shelter at this point.

      1. Some people might suggest that most of the 300 people taking shelter were Hamas soldiers as it seems like a huge risk (and waste) to first bomb a hospital and then enter it to evict all its tenants. Without a reason …

        But we’ll never know because the media never goes there.
