I often wonder if it is actionable in civil court when someone accuses you in the public forum of suffering from Islamophobia. A “phobia” is defined within the medical community as: an anxiety disorder, defined by an irrational, unrealistic, persistent and excessive fear of an object or situation.
Essentially, when someone haphazardly throws out this term, they are accusing you of being mentally ill. By doing so in the media, online, or in other arenas, they very well could be libeling the individual.
Perhaps it’s time we test that case.

Absolutely. It was a sad day in Canada when our so-called ‘conservative’ party stood in the House of Commons and voted to legitimize a fabricated, politically-charged word that would then be used to attack and belittle not only them but the millions of Canadians who support them. A word designed to downplay and run cover for Muslim hatred and violence in this country, while silencing critics and shaming them into tacit support for further atrocities. Shame on the CPC for allowing this to happen.
Well, in the past, the term “Islamophobia” was your usual name calling. It was not a libelous situation. But, then it went mainstream. Government bodies have started including it in their legislation. The UN adopts the term in their edicts and programs.
What I’m getting at is that by weaponizing the term and instilling it into the social and government fabric they have increased its reach. It is no longer and opinion based accusation. It is, instead, a reputation damaging term that carries weight. Thus, they have opened themselves up to libel when applied on an individual. They are proclaiming an individual to be mentally ill, not in a subjective opinion protected fashion, but in an objective public accusation that requires the necessity of being proven true, or there are potential damages.
