Sun- New Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship out of action because of flooding, mechanical problems
The incident is the latest of a number of issues plaguing the new ships, which are costing almost $5 billion.
The ships only have a one-year warranty, Canadian military personnel have also pointed out, which means the taxpayer is footing the bill for most of the repairs.

The question I have is why a Canadian *offshore and arctic patrol ship* is down in Pearl Harbor? This doesn’t sound like a long-range vessel design to me.
Hwaiian vacation, Whoo Hoo! exclaim the sailors on board.
Did someone pull the plug in the bilge?
Because her sister ship (HMCS Margaret Brooke) is “offshore” in Havana and wasn’t available?
Too bad this ship will miss being the War game’s favourite target.
Just because she is arctic capable does not mean she cannot operate elsewhere.
That wasn’t my point.
Its a *coastal patrol ship* – those are for patrolling your coast and one thing coastal patrol ships don’t need is endurance. So taking it 10,000 miles away from your coast and its support and then getting surprised stuff breaks down . . .
She is an OPV (offshore patrol vessel) with a range of close to 7K nautical miles not a costal craft. Being away from the coast and conducting long range voyages is literarily in her job description.
A better question is why a country with the largest coastline in the world has such a small and inefficient navy and does not have a maritime industry capable of building and maitaining ocean going vessels.
You can’t ask that. Its racist.
Who handled the order… Jim Waaatson?

Imagine if this had happened in actual arctic?
tier 2 Canada
tier 2 Irving Shipbuilding
everything from the Atlantic intergenerational welfare dependencies is tier 2 garbage.
Everything the Liberals do turns into a boondoggle. I remember when De Guvvermint proudly hired Bombardier to build us a government jet fleet at a highly inflated cost, and PM Trudeau Sr. wouldn’t fly on the damned things.
$1.2 billion per ship, and all we suckers get is a ONE YEAR warranty! Hyundai gives a three year warranty on a $30,000 car.
If memory serves, BC once had a ferry built by a European company (German, maybe?). Gordon Campbell was our premier then, and took all kinds of flack for not having it built in BC. He said at the time that his top priority was getting the best value for the BC taxpayers…the NDP, naturally, hated that.
When the NDP took power they decided to build our own “fast ferries” here in BC, and put Jack Munro in charge of the project (yes, the IWA forestry guy…who better than an ex-logger to run a shipyard project?).
Naturally, the “fast ferries” turned out to be a disaster. They went about 100% over budget and were three years behind in delivery. They threw a wake that damaged marinas and docks and fuel consumption was outrageous because the engines were over-revved to try and get the advertised speed. Loading took longer because of balancing issues and passenger areas were hot and cramped. The next Premier immediately sold them for scrap for about 19 million dollars when they had previously been offered 60-80 million for them.
The bottom line? Everything government touches turns to shit, especially when those governments funnel our money directly to their friends and supporters instead of trying to get the best value for our tax dollars.
Fred and Don have nailed it. Absolutely everything governments purchase turns out to be shit. As my Old Man used to say, ” They couldn’t make a plug for a hobby-horse’s arse.”
I’m surprised there is a 1 year warranty on a “war ship”, I wonder who underwrites it.
“The ships only have a one-year warranty, Canadian military personnel have also pointed out, which means the taxpayer is footing the bill for most of the repairs.”
This is a stupid statement, the taxpayers paid extra for the 1 year warranty, and any cost overruns would get build into future contracts, since canada doesn’t have a lot of shipyards to begin with.
Face it … Putin OWNS the Arctic … and is keeping it free from DEI LGBTQueer sailors.
Putin’s fleet in the Black Sea was destroyed by Ukraine, and Ukraine doesn’t even have a navy.
No problem then! Ukraine can take back the Donbas AND Crimea. Slava Ukraina!! They’ve WON!!! Good Gawwwd the things people post
“Good Gawwwd the things people post”
Yeah like delusions that Pootin is keeping arctic free from teh ghey using a navy that that is most famous for the Second Pacific Squadron and whose greatest historic success was causing the greatest maritime humanitarian atrocities in history of the planet.
Geez Kenji,I can feel the whoosh from here.
Right over their heads and miles above their IQ?
Well the specs didn’t specify it would actually go in water… If was just supposed to be a make-work project for idle shipyards to buy Union votes..
You just can’t stop and start shipbuilding. The last major ship construction was the CPF’s back in the late nineties. Nobody involved at a senior level at that time is involved in the business now. Yes Irving has had work since then but mostly refits. That is not building ships from scratch. The only way you can maintain a efficient and successful ship building industry is to continuously build ships. Canada doesn’t do that. Probably never will so we will suck at it. So now Irving is starting the CSC program. After the fiasco of AOPS, CSC is saying “hold my beer”.
Here’s a thought. Let the littoral NATO nations specialize. Let the Brits do destroyers for all, the French do frigates or cruisers, the Canadians do oilers for all. Or vice versa. Let the yanks do subs. a steady continuous approach, and develop expertise. I think interoperability would improve as well.
It’s all we’re skilled in … we will be ship-buildin…

One of the most beautiful Jazz rock fusion songs ever written …
A 25 mm gun and 2 x .50 cals. Sounds like a piece of sh*t coast guard vessel, not a warship. Any random Chinese fishing vessel could blow it out of the water. How about destroyers with at least a 105 mm gun and a sh*tload of missiles?
1. Why 105? If memory serves me right the last navy that used this caliber was Kriegsmarine.
2. She is an OPV not a destroyer or a frigate. Different ship for different job. Canada needs both and they are not alternatives to one another. Lots of NATO navies have them.
Our last destroyers (Iroquois class) had a 127 mm gun. Okay – 127 mm. Our frigates have a 57mm gun.
Why have a 340 ft ship hat costs $1.5 billion with less armament than a PT boat?
The 57mm on Halifax is an oddity as most of NATO went with 76mm Oto Melara for contemporary frigates, Brits being the only one who stuck with a 4.5inch gun, Italians used a 5 inch gun and French a 100mm, rest of NATO used 76mm. But Halifax as designed was a multirole ship optimized for sub chasing, so the choice of gun was secondary. Her design was very modern at the time and weapon fit was very standard. They were also the only frigates of their era operating heavy helicopters.
As for an OPV being lightly armed, of those that like to venture into arctic, Canadian ships are not that unusual, Royal Navy River class are smaller but similarly undreamed, Norwegian Svalbard is similar size and granted has one 57mm gun but that is that for her, Smaller but still substantial Barentshav have a single 40mm, Iceland has something similar with on 40mm gun. So ok, perhaps giving Canadian ships a slightly bigger gun would be cool, but would that really matter?
Honestly given the state of the funding a bigger gun for OPVs is way down on my list of priorities.
Also Iroquois after rebuilt had a 76mm IIRC.
Shouldn’t that be “Peoplekind the canoes”?
“Staff the vessels”. No cultural appropriation, please.
canaduh’s recent announcement of submarine fleet presents first complete vessel.
Can Ahh Duh is long past done .
We lost the Icebreaker’s Captain and Helicopter pilot of our last “High Arctic Voyage”..
Cause we have no support vessels ,nor backup chopper on our solitary icebreaker..
Death by hypothermia.
And with our current “Leaders” any foreign agency could be mining for years, before anyone will pay any attention to the locals report.
The state of our military and Coastguard vessels are a perfect reflection of The State of the Nation.
Holed below the waterline and sliding off the reef, whilst the Captain and Officers party on.
Why does anybody act surprised?
