Doctors have “huge advantages under our tax system” and can afford to pay more, Health Minister Mark Holland said yesterday. His remarks followed a warning from the Canadian Medical Association that changes to capital gains tax rates would cost most doctors nationwide.
“A doctor still has huge advantages under our tax system to be able to use incorporation as a tax deferral vehicle,” Minister Holland testified at the Commons health committee. Cabinet has served notice effective June 25 it will tax 66 percent of capital gains from the current 50 percent, an $18 billion increase.

What happens when a Dr. jots the numbers down and realises he will simply pay mostly tax in the final 6 weeks of the year, while still paying bills for staff and office space?
Is there a downside to saying to “clients” that we’re not accepting any clients after 15. November, the staff are all taking 6 weeks off to think about life? Maybe the staff will take 8 weeks off and make up some of the difference with E.I. ?

I’m not so sure they care about revenue because they’ll spend whatever they want and make up the difference with debt or MME/inflation. This could simply be a sop to their NDP policy brain trust, catering to the old class struggle, envy, resentment, and hatred, mind-set.
Politicians, have huge advantages under our tax system and should have to pay more, including on benefits like flights, free food, hotels, second residences, etc.
One might also look and see that Mark Holland, who doesn’t really provide any value for your average canadian, gets ~$299,300 as a salary, which is higher than the Median Family Doctor salary for Ontario of $251,496 according to his own government.
Don’t forget the consulting work they and their families get.

I am 75 years old, canadian by birth. At least four of my doctors/surgeons have moved to the states in the last 25 years. no wonder with our government policies.
Given how many doctors behaved during the ‘pandemic,’ I have a hard time feeling sympathy for them.
That said, I deplore the finance minister’s plans.
