Chinada Revenue Agency: Fair And Efficient

@jackhauen;

The CRA confirms that tenants are responsible for withholding 25% of their foreign landlords’ rent and paying it to the CRA — something almost no one was aware of a month ago.

“The Government of Canada continuously reviews the tax system to ensure it is both fair and efficient.”

Clown country: One tenant said his landlord and the CRA both refused to tell him if his landlord was a non-resident

  1. And if you can’t afford to pay your landlord’s back taxes, they’ll MAiD you.

  2. It’s one thing to expect me to pay taxes.
It’s another to expect me to collect other people’s taxes.

    1. One reason, I stopped being self employed is that I was tired of being a tax collector for the Feds. Keeping track of GST in and out and remitting the difference was an expensive and time consuming PITA

To which I would add without compensation.
It would certainly be more palatable if there was a commission of say 10-20%. Though to be understood it might be advisable to use the word ‘kickback’.
Coerced work without pay! There’s a word for that but it escapes me at the moment.

  3. An American friend of mine was astounded that all renovation contractors are tax collectors in the form of HST/GST, in Canada.
Back in the 1990’s, we had a situation where CRA sent a notice to all of the tenants of the building to send our rent payments to CRA, because they were trying to recoup GST on the building. I would think a notice would have to be sent via registered mail, in this case as well.

  4. The tax system is neither “Fair” nor “Efficient” it’s a massive complicated mess that is arbitrary and capricious, and may have been designed by a disciple of Kafka.

This is just the latest mess created by the CRA, and I’m pretty sure the tenant doesn’t have the resources to take the government to a proper court after losing at tax court, which is run by the CRA. Especially since the CRA would move to seize the outstanding funds and penalties and interest.

    1. I couldn’t agree more.
“The more laws, the less justice”. Add even further laws, and you get a Canadian Clusterf**k.

  5. Where is the law that says renters are allowed to know the Canadian status of the person they are renting from? CRA can not implement this until a law exists.

WE all Know that CRA is neither fair nor efficient.

Their plan may not be so terrible.
