Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

I remember Good Rockin Tonite with Terry David Mulligan and Friday Night Videos, we didn’t get MTV in our area, until later.
Otherwise, it was American Bandstand and Midnight special, etc, to provide our video musical needs.
I’ll add even CBC had a program called Video Hits. Aired in the late afternoon.
As well as Midnight Special, I would stay awake to watch Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert and Kenny Everett’s Video Show. Kenny’s show was where I first saw Kate Bush.
Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert. Now there’s a blast from the past. What a great show!
One of the first episodes. Doobie Brothers. Early 1970s.

I was always a fan of Mel’s Rock Pile.
Oh, yeah…rockin’ Mel Slirrup!

The Queen Haters were my first introduction to punk. Mel’s show changed my life!
Because I’m a Canadian (nominally) we in Regina (the city which rhymes with “fun”) never had access to MTV and had to wait a few years until a Canadian version came into being as “MuchMusic” which was entirely Toronto centric like no other channel could hope to be. It eventually shut down as all media in Canada eventually does without gov’t aid (welfare / tax credits)
Pat Benetar on MTV seems so contrived, reaching to be seen as natural and failing always … “not a fan, ever”
A few years after MuchMusic began we were subjected to Rush becoming overly dependent on keyboards, not really a fan of those years in spite of being possibly in love with Aimee Mann from “Til Tuesday” being used as a prop in Rush’s “Time Stand Still” (the only woman ever in a Rush video/song)

When Rush played in Regina (the city which rhymes with fun) in 1975 I paid $5.50 and the back up band was Max Webster, in 1977 they returned, playing for about 2000 people and it cost me $6.50 with Max Webster… time, didn’t stand still
We had to record “Good Rockin Tonight” as we were out chasing girls who looked like Aimee Mann and then sleeping it off…
Oh yeah Aimee was a stunner, still is..
She’s been through a lot, mental health wise and still has a sense of humor.

“Hush, hush, he’s your dad now, this is Garry!”
MIC … don’t get me started. I like Rush … I LOVE Pat Benatar, and I think I’m in-love with Aimee Mann. Kinda odd coming from a 60’s and 70’s rocker. And even odder coming from a hardcore conservative since Mann is the darling of the left … for all her female angst and near suicidal female poetry put to music. But she does it SO WELL. Her wannabe punk rock frontage for Til Tuesday was a round hole for her square peg. Her talent is as a female singer songwriter of multiple female frustrations … mainly with men. But there is still a subtle self-deprecating humor to her poetry. I am lucky to have collected two of her best works on vinyl by Mobile Fidelity … that have only exploded in value.
Probably my favorite cut from her lp Lost in Space … “It’s Not” … yeah near suicidal … but she makes a point … “people are tricky … “

PS … I want that 1981 Pat Benatar to be my dominatrix … and she can bring both guitarists as she snarl-sings to me about my transgressions … hahaha ha ha ahahaa

Kinda insane

Nite Dreems on Vancouver cable. Much better and way before MTwhatever.

“Nite Dreems on Vancouver cable. Much better and way before MTwhatever.”
Ah, yes…John Tanner on LG-FM. Takes me back…:)
We used to call him up at 2AM and get him to play Pink Floyd …he would play an entire album side.
I was a tad too young to remember or appreciate the precursor to MuchMusic which was The New Music on CityTV in Toronto. It was hosted by J. D. Roberts (now John Roberts of Fox News) and Jeanne Bekker. It seemed quite cool to a preteen and I remember them featuring artists like the Ramones, Madness and Gary Numan. Seemed pretty cutting edge with in depth features and interviews.
Also … TBF … I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s with music television via shows like: Hullabaloo, Shindig, and Midnight Special. Here’s Hullabaloo show #2 with The Hollies. And PS … I am still a raging Tony Hicks fan. A great guitarist and singer … and impossibly young when he joined the Hollies at like age 16 or 17.

And speaking of music television … I believe it was the horrific negative feedback Steely Dan got from their live performances on Midnight Special that caused them to immediately stop doing ANY live performances for another 20 years. Let’s just say the band didn’t have the faces for television … not the most photogenic band … but the music! Oh my the music!

Not even a fabulous guitar solo by Denny Dias could rescue them from the visual critics.
We could sometimes get Midnight Special via atmospheric bounce from Minot TV if the weather conditions were just right.
Like Ham Radio on TV … sweet!
I remember watching Bowie perform Time… through the snow.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_f9iT84yQg
Ha! Bowie is even stranger looking than 1972 Steely Dan’s David Palmer and Donald Fagen. The difference being that with Bowie … it was intentional 🙂
The Dave Clark 5 on Shindig … as a side note, the DC5 appeared 18 times on Ed Sullivan … far more than any other rock group. Oh yeah … the Ed Sullivan show too … appointment music television for this young lad all through the 60’s

Amazing times. When you spent more money on a stereo system than a car.
