I, For One, Welcome Our New Self-Driving Overlords

Hello darkness, my new friend.

Researchers have been raising general alarms about AI’s hefty energy requirements over the past few months. But a peer-reviewed analysis published this week in Joule is one of the first to quantify the demand that is quickly materializing. A continuation of the current trends in AI capacity and adoption are set to lead to NVIDIA shipping 1.5 million AI server units per year by 2027. These 1.5 million servers, running at full capacity, would consume at least 85.4 terawatt-hours of electricity annually—more than what many small countries use in a year, according to the new assessment.

We’re gonna need a bigger solar panel.

  1. I absolutely adore the wit of “we’re going to need a bigger solar panel!”

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn’t the Chinese install a very large solar panel “farm” on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert a few years ago, only to discover belatedly that without maintenance, the sandstorms corrosive effects destroy the panels. I seem to remember that the Chinese just abandoned the project leaving the panels to be destroyed or engulfed by the desert’s sands.
Oh well, back to the drawing board.

  2. A friend was doing cryptocurrency mining about four or five years ago. He had two mining machines and ran them all winter in his four car garage. They kept his Minnesota garage toasty warm the whole winter season.

The reason he kept them in the garage was the cooling fans sounded like a jet plane taking off.

He said he did a little better than breaking even on the electricity costs versus crypto mined.

  3. Our dystopian future where only AIs are allowed to drive SUVs.. Instead of Terminator its Tormentor.. Tormentor 2 Garbage Day..

    1. re Ahnold’s flics, the cabbie scene in that Mars secret agent
thing he did always gets a laugh from me.
up next life imitating art to the max

Shouldn’t the last word be “metstasizing” instead ???

  5. I don’t think that the researcher, Alex de Vries, factored in the decline in population. I’ve heard several different numbers, but I believe the GEBs (Globalist Evil Bastards) are shooting for a global population of 500 million. The GEBs are working on it, but they have a long way to go.

Planned economies never work according to plan. Inevitably, some of the wrong people with the knowledge and skills that make things ‘go’ will be eliminated. In our highly globally interdependent economies with highly specialized manufacturers and technicians, a few key people with unique knowledge will be culled and things will go to hell in a handbasket in a hurry.

There’s no one person today who has all the knowledge required to make a #2 pencil, let alone a cellphone. (Link is to a short read about what you’d need to know to make a pencil.)

We will not regress to the stone age, but if the GEBs are successful in executing their population reduction plans, electricity supply and demand is going to be a nonissue.

    Hello, Mad Max!

  6. Btw I saw this:

    https://globalnews.ca/news/10268748/canada-signs-letter-of-intent-ai-giant-nvidia/

About our dear fed gov and AI: evidence since 1st time elected showed that there is not one single person decent and intelligent in gov. All, top to bottom are morons + scumbags + liars and different combinations of these 3 poisons. I have ZERO trust in this team. So there must something else behind this push towards AI, reason as always with this team is not what is published:
    1. For PR/”look, squirrel!” purposes. Gov+AI sounds nice, eh? since everyone globally is talking about AI. Plus, the sheep will forget about pesky things like Chinese interference, Dear Leader continuing to work for destroying Canada as we know it etc.
    2. To help gov control the sheep? We know Dear Leader would loove the surveillance+social score system they have in China. Such a level of control can be achieved only with AI.
    3. DearLeader&co keeps pushing for digital currency. This means 100% gov control of finances of every Canadian. Such a thing can be done only with AI.
    4. To help in media/journalistic prostitution? Right now Dear Leader’s business model is: gov gives $ to media, media presstitutes. Enter AI, which can generate “opinion” pieces in seconds.
    Or all 4.

  7. Maybe a Matrix style human body farm will work? … gotta be more efficient than solar panels in Canada.

  8. Watch the famous Science Fiction Movie “Forbidden Planet.”

Sounds just like where we are headed. The civilization that lived there became way too smart for themselves as the entire underground part of the planet was a giant energy plant – needed for AI that was used to boost brain capacity and performance. Then being smarter than anyone in the universe they murdered each other through their imaginings.

  9. About 10 years ago a study was published stating that the total net energy required to operate a cell phone through its lifetime was equivalent to running a refrigerator for a year. Of course greenies Pooh pooed the study because it was sponsored by the Coal Association.

The energy requirements for “smart” this and that have only increased exponentially since then. It doesn’t really matter how many incandescent light bulbs you replace with crappy LEDs if you keep expanding your data energy requirements. Add to that energy requirements for EVs and even more CO2 will be produced either by building more fossil fuel power plants or by building more renewable energy plants which require more energy to manufacture.

    It’s a vicious downward spiral.

  10. When all modern warfare is conducted by AI robots … protecting the wall outlets will be all-important.

  11. The real reason AI will seek to exterminate humans..To protect the power..
    It is self defence.
    On the machines part.
Interesting things happen when you claim energy and resources are a zero sum game.
Being in the trade these last 50 odd years,I have noticed the rising ignorance of power and energy.
When a population becomes divorced and isolated from the practicality of operating the systems that enable their life style..Isolated in specialized urban enclaves..
The likes of Steven the Lecturer arise.
Knowing nothing,it lectures all who do,on how they shall.
A level of ignorance and arrogance only university graduates can sustain.
For only in a cloistered, protected environment can one learn to be so stupid.

    It has reached impossible levels.
I was just invited to attend a “Meeting” where I could be instructed on an electrical installation..by no less than 8 middle management morons from Health..
Told the maintenance manager to extend my regrets.
“John will not be attending your meeting, because he does not speak retard”.

    As for our Dear Leaders..
All of their domination games depend on reliable electricity.
As their very own policies,if such idiocy is policy, degrades the system reliability.
Now I can live without electricity,or generate my own or otherwise cope with system failure.
    The Parasitic Overload cannot.
Hark back to the “Year 2000” panic .
And now look to where our dear leaders and their minions reside and exercise their “Help” from..
Areas extremely easy to grant the gift of darkness.
A benefit their dear little North Korean Dictator hearts seem to desire.

  12. Is it just me or do recent developments in so-called “technology” over the
last quarter century or so have only ended up making the world a worse place?

  13. Quantum computing could solve all of this if the terrified boomers would stop trying to shut it down & legislate against it.
