Y2Kyoto: I’ll Miss The Maldives

Landification;

If sea level rise is ongoing and inexorable, then all else equal, the areal extent of global land areas should be shrinking, especially in low-lying continental areas and among tropical islands. Indeed that is the message that NASA is telling children, warning of the disappearance of large parts of the coastline, as shown below, with large parts of Florida and Louisiana succumbing to the seas.

Sea levels around the world of course are rising and expected to continue to rise throughout the 21st century and beyond. However, from 1985 to 2015 — a period when global sea levels increased by about 60 millimeters (about 2.4 inches) — the areal extent of global coastal land increased by almost 34,000 square kilometers (about 13k square miles), or about the size of Belgium home to more than 11 million people.

If the notion of landification seems paradoxical or contrary to what you’ve read in the media, don’t worry, you won’t be not alone.

  1. Don’t know…
Geography, fossil history and past architecture says differently from our current leadership of politicians everywhere…
Overgrowth and species overabundance seems to be happening in its place.

    Now in other crap…
What this author fails to understand as well that Russia has the luxury of experimentations in a real conflict situation.

Boots on the ground can’t be used without incurring massive casualties.
Actions and reactions achieved by drone technology has a reasonable chance of development of countermeasures that achieve higher education to groups or individuals behind the technology.

Using cheap drones technology to set off multi millions in missiles which needs replacement is quite an acceptable goal…

  2. Caught on early to the quackery when I read some years ago scientists covertly taking down a perfectly healthy shoreline tree on some tropical island that a sharp eyed resident had a photo of taken in the early fifties…no change, in fact there was more land now then there was in the fifties. Clearly embarrassing the climate chicken littles…and we certainly can’t have that.
Paraphrasing Kathy Shaidle – I’ll believe it when the Obamas and Al Gores of the world sell their million dollar ocean frontestates for a buck.

  3. I’ve been missing the Maldives for a decade.

AKA, “The Climate Alarmist’s Guide to Free Real Estate.”

  4. The amusing thing about all of this is that continental drift continues unabated. Some day well into the future we will, once again, have one huge ass (proper technical term) continent. I say this is amusing only in the context that these folks never even work that factor into their conceptual models. Under the sea great valleys and depressions are being formed constantly….and, ummm, when a great big void under the sea opens up, guess what pours into that chasm to fill it up.

Didn’t Japan just have a 7.1 earthquake off their coast? That didn’t just happen because Lizzo was doing cartwheels somewhere on the planet.

  5. The “sinking” of Pacific Islands due to rising sea levels is a gigantic fraud perpetrated by alarmist and the news media. We routinely see stories about future “climate refugees” from these coral island nations.

As Pielke Jr. points out, these islands actually grow in area with increasing sea levels. This counterintuitive behaviour was first identified by Darwin.

Here’s a good way to confirm the bullshit: Tuvalu, Kiribati, etc., are all engaged in constructing long-term infrastructure programs financed by major banks. Steely eyed bankers don’t support projects about to disappear under the waves. (They understand sinking funds!) 🙂

  6. The Netherlands seems to be doing alright, and they’ve been underwater for hundreds of years…

As InstaPundit says, I’ll believe there is a climate emergency when those telling me there is a climate emergency act like a climate emergency.

We’ll know when the Obamas, Kerrys, Bidens and Clintons, not to mention Zukerbergs, Orphas, et. al. sell their oceanfront and hid to the high country in Wyoming and Switzerland.

    1. And they stop flying, and they use EVs (recharged by their own solar panels).
And their houses are less than 1000 ft2.

  7. Waves crashing into the shore cause erosion. In the sixties, I learned that most volcanic islands “sink” back into the sea shortly after emerging. This was due to natural erosion.

    1. Correct. Just look at the Hawaiian islands. The big island is currently over the volcanic hot spot and is growing. Plate tectonics is drifting everything to the Northwest. As you travel northwest, each island gets smaller and smaller until they are just reefs.

However, coral atolls are built out of living coral reefs, not vulcanism. So as lea level increases the corals continue to grow and actually expand the coral atoll.
