WUWT: Is France Quietly Ditching Renewable Energy Targets?

Shut it down!
During these cold snaps, it seems like either the wind blows too hard, or it stops entirely.
Is it just my imagination?
That is also the pattern here in the Pacific NW. During extreme hot / cold wind generation is nil. No power when you need it the most, surplus power when you don’t need it at all.
What’s not to like?
Net Zero is working as intended.
…and everyone still has power. It’s almost like you can use renewables when it’s viable and then burn fossil fuels when they’re not. *Gong*
Huh.
Since they’re intended to *replace* fossil fuel burning power plants, it’s almost like we’ve got a large network of unreliable power generators that need to have 24/7/365 “backup” using perfectly good (and much more dispatchable) power generation systems.
After all, why spend tens of billions developing a reliable network when you can at least *double* that spend to build an overlay which can never be counted upon?
**GONG**
Choice : build a new combined cycle natural gas plant that produces 300MW of dependable, dispatchable power in all types of weather conditions. Lasts 40 or more years. No backup required. Can quickly be ramped up or down as necessary by the grid operators, making it useful as baseload power and peak load/emergency power. **most of the world considers natgas as clean energy.
-or-
Build 300 MW of intermittent, unreliable power that can’t produce power if it’s too windy, not windy enough, or too cold to operate safely. Lasts for about 20 years. Requires 100% backup and/or massive and expensive battery storage. Electricity production is completely dependent on Nature despite how much power is needed by the grid, making it unsuitable for either baseload power or peak/emergency power. **you’ll be doing good if it produces 30% of rated capacity.
Conventional elecricity production and transmission ran smoothly for decades on the baseload power and peaker plant model….no wind or solar is necessary from an economic or engineering perspective. Wind and solar are an unnecessary cost to what was a stable, reliable, affordable system.
What fills the batteries? Batteries simply store excess electricity. They are not a source.
Or build new nuclear power plants. No interrmittent generation needed. It’s highly reliable and typically has a capacity factor of 90%+. And they last for at least 80+ years.
the “renewables” aren’t renewable, aren’t dispatchable, aren’t reliable and usually have contracts forcing the power distribution system to “buy” their power first, even when it’s not needed.
They are being built for political reasons, not engineering purposes, and add unneeded complexity to a system that needs to be as reliable as possible.
It’s interesting the Truth came out at COP 28 ! Dr. Sultan Al- Jaber President of COP28 ———-“it would be impossible to stop burning fossil fuels and sustain economic development—unless you want to take the world back to living in caves”!
We cannot survive in this climate without fossil fuels——temperature this morning -38degree C —–Windchill
-48 degree C!!
The purpose of wind, solar or any “green” energy is to make politicians, bureaucrats and crony capitalists filthy rich. Producing actual energy has nothing to do with it.
The forecast for the Edmonton area is -50°C (-58F). We need more CO2!
The Urban Heat Island (UHI) is resulting in temperatures 15°F warmer just 20 miles north of Edmonton international airport. (Environment Canada weather)
That will save a lot on the heating load.
All the government employed socialists are going to freeze their balls off. (And who dares say a woman cannot have balls? 🙂
True. Bob’s your Uncle …. unless of course, he’s your Aunt. 🙂
Wouldn’t it be intersting if the general public, who’s generally paying for all of this, wete told these production statistics on a weekly basis in the mainstream media? That’s a lot of expensive infrastructure not returning much on investment, especially when it’s really needed.
Education is expensive, but ignorance is even more so.
Well there you have it…Greens showed their hand. Anti-nuclear
So if it’s not about saving the planet what is it then? Attempting to make energy as scarce as hen’s teeth and just as miserable as them in the process.
The gang greens have also opposed every hydro development.
Who would have thought that the French would have moved in a direction that is not only in the opposite direction to the Germans, but also smarter?
Everyone who’s been paying attention for the last four decades knew this. France’s nuclear power construction program was developed in the 1960s and went into major construction and operation in the 1970s and ’80s. It’s been exporting huge amounts of electricity to all its neighbors – Britain, Spain, Italy, Germany – for the past 30 years. France used to get most of its electrcity from the Franco-Belgian coalfield, but the last of those coal mines closed more than 20 years ago, as there’s no coal left in them.
Germany however had an overt traitor as head of the country in Chancellor Helmut Schmidt who was busily selling out the country to Russian oil interests. Germany was a prime target of the KGB with the specific goal of crippling its nuclear industry and creating a dependency on Russian oil and gas.
It worked. That’s why Yuri Andropov was chosen to be Brezhnev’s successor.
WE… are the Carbon they want eliminated.
Looks pretty obvious to me..?
I think Danielle Smith should completely dismantle the entire pile of AGW borne BS – build clean Coal Facilities and at the same time, declare ourselves INDEPENDANT. I suppose we could leave the solar as is…till it either gets bombed by hail or simply times out due to age – then dismantle and ship to Guilbeault
Kill Fossil Fuels..?? You kill our entire society..and that is precisely what this Evil cabal of GloboHomo garbage wants.
Dear Comrade Kanuckskis: You say: -35C in Kalgary. Meh! Last week in Yakutsk is -55C. Today is -45C. Next Tues is only -36C. But we are not fooled. We know this as “false spring.” Last year is colder: -63C. Brrr! Even for A Russian that is “chilly.” Lucky for us that we stocked up on extra Reindeer kakashka briquettes. Sorry, have to go to Council meeting to discuss next 5 year plan. Stiffen your spines, Comrades! Ooh Rah!
Shut it down!
